As well maybe a few years back on T-Nation there was an article or a PI that had a pic of a guy in some Third World country (somewhere in Africa, IIRC) where it looked like the guy was squatting in a junkyard & his squat bar had pieces of junk metal & concrete blocks.
Definitely inspiring & if you go back far enough in Powerful Images you’ll be able to find it.
Man, if he can find the resources to lift where he is about half of us should just shut up about our gyms…
I am always ready to lift heavy, I can picture bad things in my head and just feel the adrenaline start flowing. My motivation is some one fucking with my family and me being there. Do I want to be the weak ass bitch that couldn’t defend my brother mother or father? Fuck no! What if 1 more rep is the difference between some one I love being maimed or killed or them living a full life. I know it is quite dramatic but by playing these headgames with myself I can stretch my power and intensity to the limits.
Just typing that shit gave me an andrenaline rush my hair is standing on end. I don’t get motivated by pictures of other people that ain’t me, the most motivational thing anyone else can do for me is tell me I can’t do something then you can be sure I will do it or die trying.
I play semi-pro football and the only thing that I’ve ever been able to think about to get my blood pumping in the gym is smashing with a linemen on the other team and not wanting to be the weaker player…I weigh 220 and I have to go against 300+ fat asses and I always hold my own if not dominate…My weight training gives me the edge! That’s what seems to motivate me when I need to pump out a few more reps…
Just in case you think I was exaggerating, although this dude was actually closer to 400 pounds…

Down this road, in a gym far away,
a young man was heard to say,
“No matter what i do, my legs won’t grow.”
He tried leg extensions, leg curls, and leg presses, too
trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he’d do.
From the corner of the gym where the big men train,
through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain,
where the noise is made with big forty-fives,
a deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees,
a very big man with legs like trees.
Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack,
chalking his hands and monstrous back,
said, “Boy, stop lying and don’t say you’ve forgotten,
the trouble with you is you ain’t been SQUATTIN’.”
I’ve got it typed up big and posted so I face it when I stand in my power rack. Still gets the blood flowing after all these years.
