Where do these crossfitters find such light weights that look so big? They have 5’s that look like 45’s.
They are bumper plates. Almost all 5lb bumpers look like they are heavier than they are. They need to be so that they don’t bend and warp and crack under the weight of the bar if someone throws them down. They also need to be the same diameter as the heavier plates because they are for training technique.

Surprised they don’t take some inflatable rings from the beach and use them in-between the plates. That would ‘look’ really heavy!

Maybe T-Nation could run a crossfit article including such elements as:

 1. The Duvet press - Especially difficult on Monday mornings
 2. The Clean (the dishes) - Pans are reserved for the advanced.
 3. The dip (of your toe into the pool to make sure it’s not too cold.
 4. The squat (pee like a girl) - and other ‘Al fresco’ toilet techniques when camping.
Hating on bumper plates, really…?
Well, if crossfitters use them, they must be useless.

All Glassman did was…

 1. Steal cool shit from other programs…(i.e Supertraining)

 2. Throw into a pot, mix well…throw against wall = WOD of the day.

 3. Make every workout a contest, recruit upper middle class white not athletic types…tell them they are EEELEET.

 4. ???

 5. Reebok pays millions in profits!!!

/Glassman buys out entire Bombay Gin production facility for “research”

So what they’ve decided to do is install a limiting factor in the exercise which has almost nothing to do with the exercises point.

By using the mixed grip with the thick bar they’ve turned this into a forearm exercise with a back crushing component.

The limiting factor of an exercise should be the muscle groups which are the protagonsists, not the supporting muscles. Consider doing bicep curls on Bosu ball. What is the limiting factor? It aint the biceps. I put this exercise into the same category.
While I appreciate your ‘theoretical’ approach here, have you actually cleaned an axle before? The mechanics are quite a bit different than a standard olympic barbell clean.

I need to join a crossfit gym…for the women folk…

Bumper plates are obviously great and I am not hating them. But using them to make a bar look heavier is pretty sad…especially with terrible form. Those girls should have been coached better than that.

No. Never have and never will. But then again I’ll never do a ‘Two handed Anyhow’ either.
Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not hating on crossfit. But I would ask that anyone advocating this exercise justify it.

Its a bang for buck as well as a risk/benefits thing. As I stated I see that the limiting factor in this exercise is the grip, not the legs, back, shoulders, core. If I want to do a forearm exercise, there are much safer choices. Furthermore the need to change the grip by perching the weight on your belly while risking a prolapsed disk is an unnecessary risk.

Why do this exercise when a standard Power clean and press has so much more to offer?

As an extra point look at that video and ask what coaching was being given to the girls to help them. Even if they were just farting around, the technique was spine shiveringly bad. No concept of stiffening the core to recieve the weight. I just can’t see this as as long term survivable exercise.

that first vid is some fucked up shit.

I like to think crossfit is more like this

The editing on that video was good and the stills they used were powerful.

Also, that chick is hot!

There is no doubt there is some retarded shit in Crossfit. That said you can walk into any gym in the country thats not a Westside type place and dozens of morons will be doing bodybuilding or powerlifting a la retard.

Its not PL vs BB vs CF.

Its tards vs the rest of us and the tards are winning.

Axle clean and press is a Strongman event - so it makes sense, in a Strongman class, to train for said event.

Their execution of Strongman “training” was certainly terrible, but I see no reason to be discussing a standard clean and press as superior. One is not given the option of using a standard olympic barbell or an axle in a competition.
