Question:

I am going to BJJ practice tomorrow, and at the end of class, we do live sparring. I start out ok, but when one of the guys puts me into a hold (kimura, shoulder lock, etc), I am usually stuck as to what to do, and usually get submitted. I usually try to roll into the move (if the guy is going for a kimura on my right arm, I try to roll to my right the second I know he is going for it).

Any suggestions/tips/advice on what I should do to defend myself and to possibly get out of the position(s)?

Thank you in advance.

Couple of things. Firstly you don’t say what position you were in.

If from the guard, typically you get kimuraed when you plant a hand on the floor (avoid this).

Whatever position arm attacks typically start when their is separation between your elbow and your own body (avoid this).

Finally, if you do get in the position where someone is attacking an arm, typically you want to get that shoulder on the ground and the other shoulder up.
Hey CB, preciate the response. Sorry, usually I am in guard when my opponent tries to submit me. Good points on avoiding the hand to the floor, elbow/body separation, and getting the shoulder to the ground, I will definitely try those.

BJJ Thursday. Worked on breaking down guard, armbars, gogoplata, omoplata, and shoulder lock. Did conditioning drills (bags, pads, etc), then finished with sparring. I can get to the submission position fairly regularly, but still having trouble applying the right pressure and leverage to submit someone, so I need to work a lot more on that to ensure I am getting proper pressure in the right places.

Thanks Money!

Nice work Steve!!!.

Irish… I hear you on the surgery- Im in need of a different kind but not real eager to get it.

Get the surgery Irish. If it keeps getting worse and worse, get the surgery. You will be in pain for a short while during your recovery, but the long-term health and benefits are very much worth it. I tore up my ACL/MCL/PCL playing hoops, and I waited over 2 years to get surgery, to the point where even walking would hurt. It’s been over four years since my knee reconstruction, and my knee feels great. Your reconstructed shoulder will be stronger after surgery, and better for you.

Thanks kmc!

Ugh… that sucks to hear Irish. Possible torn labrum? Let us know how the MRI goes.

I guess I’ll participate a little bit. Here is a video I took a few weeks ago:

If I could be doing anything better feel free to let me know.

Have you ever had an MRI done it before?

Oh ok. I tore my right labrum and rotator cuff during my college volleyball season. Weirdly enough, boxing/Muay Thai has not really bothered it. I was all scheduled for surgery in May (right after the season ended) and had to postpone because something with the insurance rolled around. Well it was July by the time that got fixed and the rehab work I was doing, combined with not spiking the volleyball anymore, seemed to have my shoulder feeling fine. No more pins and needles while trying to go to sleep. I started, very tentatively at first, training boxing and it didn’t seem to bad for me. After a hard training session my shoulder will be sore and I know to take it easy, but other than that, the punching has not been bad on it at all. Did you hurt it boxing or rolling?

Not really sure what the hell I’m trying to say other than make sure you find a good shoulder doctor because there seems to be a lot of bad advice out there. Soft tissue work also goes a looooonnnnngggg way. Dropping $1000 over a couple months on ART appointments could save a 15k surgery bill.

I believe I have a torn rotator cuff- have since I was 18 but dealt with it. Something more serious is going on now though.

Honestly the training doesn’t bother it. Shadowboxing, jumping rope, heavy bag work, pads… the shoulder feels ok. But sparring, even if I had the capabilities to do it at this point, would be completely out.

It popped out a couple days ago doing something innocuous- breaking up my six month old dogs who were going to war with each other. To me, that’s a sign that something is going wrong when it’s so weak.

I popped it out the first time boxing, and the second time rolling. Rehab helped, but the shoulder was/is still unstable no matter what I do for it.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I’m going to my doctor next week to see what specialist he recommends, and I trust his judgment. I will definitely let everyone know how it progresses.
well if its a rotator cuff the only way they can tell is by an MRI and sometimes you even need and MR Arthogram whick is when the inject di into your shoulder and do an MRI. i went through MRI and an MR Arthogram before they decided it wasnt my rotator cuff but my pectoral that was torn. I then had to get another MRI to confirm what i told the first doctor(that i told him it was my pectoral i thought was injured. I went to a second doctor when the first told me i was fine and should just take it easy. What a douchbag.) Ummmm anyway thank god for health insurance or i’d be fucked.

What do you mean by “pop”? like a dislocation? or like something just tore off the bone?

So sorry to hear about this, Irish! This thing has been plaguing you for a long time. What a drag.

Fantastic classes tonight. I didn’t sleep well last night and had a good workout at lunch today, so I was a tired SOB when I got to the dojo, but I woke up during my warmup. Note to self… don’t jump rope barefoot.

In striking class, we worked jabs, crosses, uppercuts and combos. I switched between southpaw and righty each round. Coach observed while we worked with another boxing coach to see what we needed to work on. I need to work on my foot work and head movement. Both coaches said I had good timing, really heavy hands and that I had good knock-out power. The speed bag and shadow boxing has been paying off.

In judo, we worked a variety of throws. I picked these up pretty quick and actually hit a couple of them during rondori. Even threw my coach a couple times when he wasn’t expecting it. There were several promotions tonight. One guy got his yellow belt, the boxing coach got his brown belt, and I got my orange belt.

Something else happened tonight that hasn’t happened in quite some time. I got some really good bruises. I haven’t gotten a bruise from training in months. Also bled a little… It was a good night!

Irish… how do you sleep?
face, back side?

My right shoulder is kinda jacked, its set back lower and further away then the other
I broke the clavicle, popped it a number of times , did some damage to the ac joint and labrum.

I ask about how you sleep cause, sleeping on my side is painful, and leaves me with a good amount of low level pain. Its also not just sleeping on your side- its where your shoulder/arm is while your asleep
sometimes I sleep face down and turning the head to the side leaves some shoulder/neck pain.

When it rains or the humidity changes, I can tell it hurts all day

As much as I dislike being a DR. on the internet, torn cuff is hard to diagnose,
its more likely a pretty serious impingement
I have had really good luck with band pull aparts, dislocates, and ytwl or ytlp.
you might want to check out things like the throwers 10 as well.

BJJ tonight. Worked on lower body submissions (knee lock, heel lock, ankle lock), worked on wrestling moves (single/double leg takedowns, defending takedowns), then hit the pads and rolled with other people in class. Stayed after to roll with a couple of experienced guys. Still getting submitted everytime, but the guys keep saying I’m getting better every week. I guess I am hard on myself and feel like I’m not making any progress. I guess when I submit someone more experienced than me is when I feel I will have it. Just gotta keep practicing and staying with it. I am enjoying it and look forward to it every week.

Last night sparred with Matt, bloodied his nose for the first time. The guys I train with are so sweet. He looked at his blood & said, “Oh, Miss Parker, I’m so proud of you! This is a milestone!” Yes, a lot of my friends really do call me Miss Parker. I still have a headache from where he always punches me in this one spot on my head. Gotta learn to cover that.

Once again I failed to finish him in a rear naked choke. We ended up on the ground & I managed to get his back, so I wrapped my arm around his throat & flipped us over. I was on my back, he was laying on top of me, I had my hooks in, but eventually he managed to arch his back & slide the top of his head back, reaching around to continually punch me in the face. He was gagging, but I couldn’t get it in deep enough to cut off his arteries & that little bastard just will not quit.

Sounds like fun! I’d like to come to a class next time I’m in Austin! I have family in Killeen and get down once or twice a year.
