Nothing for me, we charge students $119 per month for unlimited classes in krav, mma, fitness, & yoga. I think we’re expensive for Austin, but most places limit the number of classes you can take, so who knows?
Thanks for the feedback.
OK BJJ and MMA last night.
First I spent a half hr drilling popping to the knees and double or single legging from under side mount with one of the guys who is competing at the nationals.
Next gave an hrs class on two sweeps from the half guard using a butterfly hook half guard. Sat out the sparring because my adductor is still sore.
Finnished by spending 30 mins drilling using a jab and a slip step to enter for a double leg takedown.
I hate being injured. Not sparring sucks!
I recently started MMA. Been to one session so far (ground work) and enjoyed it.
Standing up sesh’ is on Sunday. I can’t wait.
Question:
I am going to BJJ practice tomorrow, and at the end of class, we do live sparring. I start out ok, but when one of the guys puts me into a hold (kimura, shoulder lock, etc), I am usually stuck as to what to do, and usually get submitted. I usually try to roll into the move (if the guy is going for a kimura on my right arm, I try to roll to my right the second I know he is going for it).
Any suggestions/tips/advice on what I should do to defend myself and to possibly get out of the position(s)?
Thank you in advance.

I just started BJJ my self. However I’ve been asking the person that just owned me how-to escape it. So far I’ve got shitty but workable escapes/prevents from GI-chokes, arm-bars(mounted and in guard), key-locks, and triangles.

Been busy, training and college stuff, and have been leaving yall in the dark. I’m sure you missed my enlightening words ![]()
Training has been going very well. My top game is getting rather strong, although my actual submissions aren’t quite there yet. I’m passing guard, defending subs, and getting mount on most of the people im rolling with. I’ve managed to get mount on even the instructor (although I was eventually reversed and subbed
) I just need to work on my subs. I’ve been working armbars and arm triangles from top, and kimuras, armbars, and triangles from side control. I just need to keep drilling them. However, im not super worried about it, because im planning on fighting at some point, and if I get side or mount, im going to be punching guys in the face.
My bottom game, which I am working more than my top game, has been getting better quick. If I sit with them in my guard, they usually cant pass unless they trap my arm behind my back. I’ve been working on switching from sub to sub, kimura, to gogo, to triangle, back to kimura. I usually get the triangle if I get one, which I attribute to my long legs.
Thats about it, nothing too exciting, just slow and steady improvement. My fconditioning is through the roof, im very rarely getting gassed in practice, and im working as hard as I can.
Mitchellh, thank you for the response. I usually do the same thing, when I get submitted, I ask the guy how I can work my way out of it, then work through the defense. Long.And.Skinny, nice work, looks like “a little bit of wrestling” is helping you out haha. That was a great story.
BJJ tonight. Conditioning drills, worked on rolling guy over from bottom to top and gaining position, breaking down guard, shoulder locks. Sparred last 15 minutes of class in a rotation, where we sparred with different people for 1 minute each. Only got submitted twice. I realized I am trying to use my strength to overpower my opponent, when JJ is just the opposite of that, and you are supposed to minimize energy usage. So then I was just trying to go through the motions and it was better.
At the end of class, rolled with one of the experienced wrestlers, who I rolled with last week. We went for 6-7 rounds until one submitted the other. Last week, he submitted he every time. Today, he submitted me every time, but said I did 100 times better than last week, as I am working for position better and working through the technique better. Had him in a pretty tight guillotine choke, but my grip slipped and he slid out and submitted me later. Just need more practice, I’ll get there by the grace of God.
Sorry, but I need some help for my strength workout:
MAX UPPER
A weighted chin-up variations work up to a 3-5rep max
B db floor press 4s 10reps
C db rows 4s 10reps
D bb shrugs 4s 10reps
E iso-hold db curls 4s 10reps
REP UPPER
A iso-hold chin-up variations 3s max time

(maybe superset B and C)
I’m not sure if it’s ok, or maybe too unbalanced for MMA…I need some help please
Exitus-
It’s kind of a modified DeFranco’s, right?
I’m guessing you’ve got a leg day or leg days in there too ![]()
Personally I would (and am, more or less) following the program as DeFranco wrote it-
He includes rear delt work which I think is really important.
And over-head pressing (or, at least, direct shoulder work)
Also the rep-upper day he includes super-sets… which you’re considering… and I think it’s a good idea. Personally I’d drop the curls on rep upper and put in some sort of tri-isolation, too…
If there’s some reason you’ve modified it the way you have, though, I’d be interested to hear why, and whether you’ve tried it the way it was written and your experiences with it?

I started a new log ( Forums - T Nation - The World's Trusted Community for Elite Fitness ) but my basic schedule (BJJ) is:
M - Gi
Tu- No Gi
W - Gi
Th - Dance, Gi
Fr - MT (I’m not loving it though and may just drop it)
Sa - Gi
Su - No Gi
Our BJJ classes are 3 hours, a really basic 15 min warm up (it really just makes you warm), 2 hours of learning technique, then we usually drill/roll until everyone is done. [/quote]
I used to train on a similar schedule and I think I was overtraining. It was hard to retain information during a 3 hour class and especially if I was in there 6 days a week.
Yesterday went to the new ladies lifting class, worked squats, bench, & deadlifts.
Then went to the studio when no one was there to work hooks to the bag without distractions. Owner of the studio showed up & ended up giving me an impromptu private lesson, which was nice.
Came back later for class, we worked the focus mitts, then “buck trap & roll”, then headlock on the ground. Did a cool drill where you’re giving constant hammerfists to a bag, while your bagholder is continually changing levels from standing to laying on the ground with the striker in mount.
The bagholder randomly yells “attack!” & tosses the bag aside & bursts in & puts you in one of the headlocks on the ground, which you fight your way out of, then grab the bag begin the drill again, no stopping. They give you that “attack” warning so they don’t eat a punch when they throw the bag aside. It was a great drill, I’m stealing it for my own classes. Drill thief!

Couple of things. Firstly you don’t say what position you were in.
If from the guard, typically you get kimuraed when you plant a hand on the floor (avoid this).
Whatever position arm attacks typically start when their is separation between your elbow and your own body (avoid this).
Finally, if you do get in the position where someone is attacking an arm, typically you want to get that shoulder on the ground and the other shoulder up.

For me I would not bother with the curls as you already have chins in there.
Also on your max effort day you are mainly using 10 rep sets. I would increase the weight and drop the number of reps per set.
But that is for me and your needs are probably differnt.
Over the last couple of days I have finally started squatting and deadlifting again (adductor is still tender but holding up.)
Last night I had the chance to take part in the class instead of teaching it (which was nice.) We started off working on pushing and pulling in standup then split the class. Not sure what the beginners were doing but we were doing flying armbars. Now on the whole I don’t like flying armbars and would never go for one in a competition or a fight but they do look flashy and are certainly fun. Also I think they are good for getting people to take a leap of faith every now and then.
In the MMA class we were working on stuffing a takedown to a sweep that leads to a nice crucifix (my neck hurts this morning as I was demonstration dummy)
Sparred Matt this afternoon. He is the only one I don’t do rounds with - we just go non-stop until we need a minute’s rest, then go some more. Usually we work for one hour, but today I gassed after only half an hour & called it quits. I was very frustrated with myself over this til he pointed out, “Well, yeah you’re tiring out faster, you’re actually hitting me hard now & not just standing around playing defense”. So there’s that.
Next hour’s Krav class I taught some level 2 techniques for the first time, getting ready for my next Phase.
After class Matt was taking so long to join me so we could get tacos that I wandered into the MMA class, where the instructor asked me to spar this guy who had never sparred before (standup striking only). I said sure, & he was very timid at first, of course, but then he kind of got going & it was fun trading hits with him. It’s nice to hit people you don’t know instead of your friends for a change.
I took 2nd @ state Judo championships in the 190 division today. I’m getting more wins every tournament. Everyone from my club medaled… it was a good day.
