My girlfriend and I were playing around with measurements (no, not that kind) the other day and I thought of some questions. What is the proper way to measure a thigh? Mine could have been anywhere from 23 to 28 inches, depending on how it was measured. Large range. Correction, my right one. My left thigh seemed an inch smaller at most points. How common is that? A lot of people take and post their measurements, but I assume they post their “best” arm, calf, or thigh measurements. I noticed some surprising differences in left and right bodyparts. I guess my question is, how messed up, like mine, are the rest of your bodies, if at all? It seems that that’s the best thing that can come from measurments - quantitatively determining progress and imbalances. Also, are there any articles on how to correctly take measurements? I read Poliquin’s on arm measurements, and that was helpful, but I was concerend about the other parts as well.
as far the difference in my right and left leg, my right one is larger by ½ an inch. this is due to me being right handed (therefore by preference using my right leg first to peform tasks).
as for where to measure your body parts, i had always assumed people went by the highest peak on their muscle (which is usually the center part). if there is different places in which you must measure certain bodyparts, i can see it becoming very confusing.
i just use the highest peak of the muscle, and don’t worry about it.
I measure my thighs in two locations. Four inches down from the groin and six inches from the top of the knee cap. I do this because my idea of idea thighs is more along the line of Frank Zane, not Tom Platz.
The lower measurement let’s my know how my vastus muscles are doing.
Best of Luck.
Look up a book on anthropometry. Someone at your local gym should have loads of info on all measurement sites too.
