Lifting Belt INCREASES Chance of Hernia?

One doctor told me that weightlifing belt can CAUSE hernia rather than prevent it. I mean it increases intra abdominal pressure, but its width is only 10-15cm. So areas above and below a belt are more vulnerable to hernia when you use your belt than when you dont.

What do you think? I never used one and wondered about using it, but now im confused

I’ve been told by some pretty knowledgble weight/Olympic trainers not to use a weight belt unless your doing a 1 rep max with very heavy weight. Apparently chronic use of the belt takes alot of your stabalising abdominal muscles out of the equation, therefore creating weakness in that area. Just what I’ve been told. I don’t use a belt either.

isnt that LOGICAL? that belt creates danger below and above it (belt is only 10-15 cm width at most)?

Haven’t heard of anyone getting a hernia b/c of this…

Edit.
I wrote something about herniated discs then realsied that isn’t what you are referring to so deleted.

As for a hernia to the abdominal or crutch area then I’ve never heard of such a thing being blamed on a lifting belt.

The logic makes sense in that the purpose of a belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure and increased abdominal pressure can cause a abdominal hernia in someone predisposed to them. I don’t know of any actual correlation though. Belt’s aren’t generally considered an injury prevention tool and definately not an abdominal hernia prevention tool. When I use my belt it’s to lift more weight with stability.

so belt does not increase lower back safety?
