I’ve started lifting again after a two year absence - but more importantly also after leg surgery about 3 months ago. I have oedema (swelling of the tissues) as a result of the procedure and while it’s gone down loads since the op, everytime I exercise it gets worse again. the docs are typically hedging their bets - saying it might be up to a year (!!!) before I stop swelling with exercise.
I’ve started a 3day split routine I found on powerful women which is working well EXCEPT for the swelling
I would just like to know if there’s anyone out there training with oedema and if so HOW??? tips would be great, or even just someone out there who knows what I’m going through would be nice to hear from…
cheers guys

A post on a forum cannot possible substitute a professional medical diagnosis.
My advice is to stop whatever is causing swelling in any sort, shape or form and listen to whatever your physician tells you.
Complete healing and rehabilitation, especially of joint injuries, can take a year (or longer !). Some injuries won’t fully heal at all.
However, no matter how long it takes for your leg to heal, letting it heal up completely and starting to work out after its done healing is always shorter and less complicated than aggravating an injury over and over again because you’re impatient.
thanks for the well meaning advice
- but I’ve spoken to the docs and they say IT’S OK to exercise with oedema - it’s just that exercise exacerbates the problem (as does heat - guess living in vietnam isn’t going to help that either…)
oedema can be an ongoing endemic problem that can resurface intermittently for the rest of your life. I guess I was just wondering if there’s anyone else out there who also suffers…and what works for them to help alleviate the symptoms when they do start to swell…
thanks anyway…
