Lanky Me Chasing 5 More lbs, 1 More Rep

Hey Mort! Mostly just reading other people’s logs. Haven’t been training to be honest, hence no activity here, and not much to contribute either. Hoping this lockdown will end soon. But even if it will, I think gyms might be closed for some time

Man, this was gold. Excited to train again. Sadly, it’ll have to wait though

What u up to these days? Still locked up?

Hey piggie. Board exam is on July 31, so studying 12+ hours a day. Application to hospitals is this late October, and we’ll know by March next year if a hospital picks us. Can’t wait to buy my own bar once I get into a hospital

Just wanted to share my mom’s cabbage roll recipe

Cabbage Rolls

  1. Finely chopped carrots, onions, shiitake mushrooms
  2. Add 2 lbs of lean ground pork and 1 lb regular ground pork with fat, mix in 4 eggs
  3. Season with salt, pepper, chicken bullion powder
  4. Cut stem of cabbage, boil cabbage to separate, let drain on the side
  5. Wrap the mixed pork with individual cabbages, arrange neatly in casserole
  6. Add water or chicken stock into casserole, season with patis (fish sauce) and pepper
  7. Boil for 5 to 10 mins
  8. Simmer until cooked, around 20 mins

Looks good.
How are things going by the way? (Haven’t really been active on the forum for a bit)

Haven’t lifted since start of quarantine. Focusing on my exam in two weeks too. Mostly lurking the forums when I have some down time The rest of the members seem just fine for the most part. You?

I can’t say I’ve been bad relative to most people atleast. My arm’s also ~a couple degrees of normal, and I’m slowly rebuilding

Good luck man!

Haven’t really checked in on any logs recently, but glad your arm is getting better!

And thanks!

Ok, so exam is finally done. Apologies if I haven’t followed anyone’s log lately. Most logs are 100-400+ replies in, so I doubt I could finish reading them. Hope you all are doing okay despite the strange times.

Still no access to a gym. Might be able to do some pullups here at home. Space was cleared, and I see a strong solid beam from where I can hang from.

So for now, plan is to do pullups, hanging leg raises, and bulgarian split squats with those sacks of rice lying around. It’s something.

Edit: really sad to see @mortdk having to take a break from the forums. You helped me a lot when I started around here, and have helped a lot since then. Hope to hear from you again, friend!

Go buy sand (ideally packed sand for better volume), heavy duty garbage bags, and heavy duty duct tape. Divide the sand into the garbage bags and tape it closed with duct tape.

Find the biggest backpack you have and put the sandbags into the backpack. Now you have a sandbag that you can use for all sorts of stuff.

I’ve considered taping the garbage bag all around multiple times to make a true DYI sandbag, but I’m scared that i’ll rip.

Ooohh thanks for the idea. Was thinking of getting a cheap ass rogue bar for the time being, but everything’s still out of stock. I think rogue has some pretty good quality bags for putting sand in too

Y’all locked down proper or can u go to a hardware store etc.

U still wanna shop for some gains?

I have been so focused on the exam, I don’t know what the current state is here LOL. But yeah I think they’re open

I was thinking of getting a good pair of adjustable dumbbells. Should be able to accomplish much with that. Any tips on brand and do’s and don’ts?

I considered getting even a cheap-ass bar from Dick’s Sporting Goods, but even those are sold out.

I have an old The North Face backpack that I’m using for my “sandbag”. I have ~80lb worth of DB and sand in it right now (~40lb of sand, 2 15lb DB, 1 8lb DB=78+the backpack must weight something). This thing is not easy to do a front squat with, and it gets pretty hard when I do a paused squat.

And that thing becomes rather difficult to OHP when I have ~70lb in it.

Got enough space for at least 2-3 more 8lb DB that I have laying about, so I’m pretty sure I can get that thing up to 100lb. Getting that thing up to my chest is hard though.

And you can do weighted push-ups with this kind of “sandbag”!

I looked into the rogue sandbags. They’re really expensive.

With legit equipment lotsa places are sold out and manufacturing is slowed too at the China end.

I don’t think adjustable DB brands will really matter. They all made in China anyways. I picked up an oly handle that needed a bit of a clean and does the job.

Standard sized handles (smaller plate hole diameter) will probs be cheaper. Oly handles (use the same size weights as oly barbells) are usually better quality e.g. spinning sleeves but bit more $$. Big factor is in the availability and cost of the weights ur finna load up the DB with.

Like DB press is my favourite DB movement but for that I’d need up to 50kg each and beyond. At $5/kg it adds up. I can’t use my 45cm diameter oly plates because theyd get in the way.

If u get a standard size set up won’t be able to use em on an oly set up or barbell if u decide to get one.

U can DIY yourself some weight that’ll be sufficient to stimulate hypertrophy at least which will later carryover to ur strength work.

@magick thanks for the idea!

@guineapig tried looking around at ebay. yep, things are expensive now. How much is a fair price per kg? Been seeing CAP barbell adjustable DB with 60lb pair that goes for 169.99 usd, and 40lb pair for 129.99 usd

Hard to say because I’m thinking in terms of Australian products. $5 AUD /kilo looks like the number where I’m at. So dems u listed would be more expensive than that but these ain’t the times to be looking for the absolute cheapest things
