Interesting on the topic of creating standards, brian schwab posted this over at elite:
When word got out at Orlando Barbell that I had done 31.5 pull-ups in an attempt to break Matt K’s Elite log record the challenge began. I was quickly defeated by someone who I thought was my friend, Steve Pratt, who accomplished 32 but was using wrist straps.
We decided that we had to have some clearly defined rules and set a date to make this challenge official. The rules were:
- The returning champion chose the order of the competitors.
- Shirts must be worn.
- No videotaping was allowed.
- Straps were allowed.
- The competitor had to come to eye level with the bar.
- An “honest attempt” at full extension must be made. (this was my rule)
- We had to have at least one biased, that’s right, biased judge.
Saturday, 5/12/07, was the chosen date and 1:30 the time. Marky Mark Lessmann was chosen as our biased judge.
Kalin Chester bowed out under pressure before the challenge began.
Big 6’7" 240 lb. Mike Lacombe was chosen to go first. He accomplished a respectable 25.
Daniel “The Natural” Tinajero was the second competitor and had many bets placed for him to be champion. With his previous best at only 26 I thought I had it in the bag. Daniel accomplished a remarkable 38.
I was next. I focused like I was at a meet blocking out my surroundings thinking only about the challenge before me. I strapped up and began, 32 reps into it I decided it was time to begin the leg kicking tactic. It worked. I pulled off 43 reps which was more than I even thought I could do.
Steve “The Face” Pratt was the returning champion and chose to go last. Early on in his attempts he began swinging wildly, I can only assume it was from the pressure. He gave it his all but walked away tying his PR of 32.
I was victorious.
