That’s a cool pic of Howard, but he’s still “only” about 3 feet off the ground. Impressive for a 7 footer though.
The pic Bruceleewannabe posted of Wells and Diaw is very decieving because of the angle. They look like they’re flyin because the camara man is sitting on the ground.
Ronnie Fields was widely regarded as the best leaper in his class which included C.Benjamin, Kobe Bryant, Lester Earl and Lucas Barnes [ the latter 2 could both get up, but nothin to write home about]. If not for his car accident and legal troubles he would’ve at least been drafted.

Dwight Howard is 6’11. And could you post a link or something to this Gary Fuller guy that you say has a 50 inch? Thanks.
Email them, ask for the dvd & your jaw will drop. Gary’s freshman yr. in high school his vert was 18’. By his Sr. yr. he got it to a three step 48’! HIs dad built the SuperCat. My dad I keep in touch with him by phone & email. While playing ball in college his best recorded vertical was a three step 52’. He said most of the time he was 48 to 50 inches with a three step.
The best leapers I’ve seen have been Spudd Webb & Gary Fuller. I love watching the 6’5’’ & under guys jumping, dunking. More impressive IMO. And of course Jordon & Carter, both being 6’6’‘. Maybe Carter is 6’5’'.

Whiteflash is correct but with some exaggeration; a true 40 vert is rare…to give you some perspective…in 90 I played in the LA summer pro league…I went the free agent try out route…at least 100 guys in camp…all very good ballers…everyone is measured, etc. guys 6.5 become 6.3 so forth and so on. They measured verticals and even allowed a jab step; only 4 out of about a 100 recorded a vert higher than 32. And these are ball players my friend. All great athletes. The highest recorded vertical that day was from a white boy (and I was one of the 4, white also). He was around 40 or so and I hit a 38. One guy hit a 39 or so but his game was weak. Goes to show you there is athleticism and then there is skill. You need BOTH. The average of what I would consider the “athletic” guys in camp was about 32…these were guys averaging around 6.6 or so and appeared to fly. yup, 32 - nothing to write home about but still higher than the inflated crap you read about. Finally, a little perspective - I didn’t know shit about training then…did some half assed plyo program and I my lifting was built upon overtraining to say the least.
I wish I knew then what I know now. But that aside, even in 7th grade, I set the middle school vertical record - dead standstill, 27. I’m a firm believer in genetics. Barely hair on my balls and I’m hitting 27. Anyway, I’ve known plenty of guys that could fly…and alot of them couldn’t ball. I can’t even watch a high school game anymore b/c guys are so damn impressed with dunking they can’t even shoot a decent jumper with decent mechanics. ESPN has forever ruined the sport. Everyone wants to be on a highlight, instead of having all around skills.
Nice post! Dunking is cool, but not everything. Look @ Pete Maravich, Nate Archabald & many others too! They didn’t dunk, ( rare if Pete did ) & they were amazing, awesome basketball players!
Well I would like to add the guy from the Globetrotters, Michael Wilson to the list. At 6 ft 5 he can dunk to a 12 ft basket, a world record. Dunno what his vertical is but I would hazard a guess its about 50 inches.

Here’s a picture.
Well at 6’5" I’m going to assume that AT MOST, his reach is 8’6". I’m a 6’3" lanky bastard and my reach is only 8’0" (I measured combine style, 2-hand reach with shoulders pressed up, I think it’s pretty accurate because a 1-hand reach is tough to judge IMO). I’m going to assume that to dunk a ball on a 12’ rim you have to be getting up to around 12’6". So you’re probably looking at around 48" off the run, could be even more. Very very impressive indeed.
I’m liking the topic…heres somethin that everybody might like…this kid is at eastern washington university right now…
henry bekkering is sick, and suprisingly only a 34" vert.
http://www.suaveandsmooth.com/video/Bekkering-interview.wmv
you can see him really get up in that vid
Enigma, that’s his TRUE vert, not some inflated arbitrary # tossed out to make him sound like Superman. I’d bet my house that he can get a good solid 40"-42" off of the run.
lol, hopefully my statement didn’t come across to you as “34 inches, that’s it!” I fully agree that his real vert is 34 inches. At 6’5 with a 34 inch vert he’s only 10 inchess away from head to the rim and in that second vid of him, I posted you can see he can easily get head to the rim. 40 inches off run for sure.
ps. whiteflash have you seen byron parker? Guy is nuts 36 inches standing, then on like pump reverses, windmills, 2 hand reverse windmills, he hits 43 inches.
Yeah, I caught the college dunk contest he was in, which I don’t know if anybody caught it was against “Helicopter” from the And 1 show.
He [Byron] had a sick dunk where he came from the left wing, jumped, spun to his left, brought it between his ankles and dunked the shit out of the ball.
That’s the next dunk I’m gonna work on 'cause it was rowdy.
Yeah that 2 hand reverse windmill he did was sick(even though copter did that for his first dunk) but by far I think he has one of the sickest pump reverses(almost as good as harold miner). It would have been a totally different story if copter had done the through the legs dunk, he always does in games like nothing.
What kind of dunks are you putting down Whiteflash? I’ve dunked but nothing special(only some much an asian guy can do).
In games I might get a reverse on a breakaway, and I’ve tossed it to myself off the glass in traffic a couple of times, but this is at 24hr fitness not in a league.
In contests my 3 favorites right now are: I come from the right wing, bounce it with my left, do a 270 catch it with my right and put it down. It’s pretty much the same dunk Fred Jones did, but I don’t catch it THAT far out.
From straight away, I’ll throw it up, 180 and tuck it between my legs then reverse it.
The last is I’ll come from straight away, toss it off the glass, catch it from behind the dotted line, cock it back and dunk it as hard as I can.
I’ve also had a friend sit in a chair, throw it up as I jump over him and put it down, but I always get nervous about it.
any windmills? sick either way. I better get 6 more inches. If at 5’10 with a 3 foot vert you can do all that, then I’m not far off(hopefully).
I can catch a windmill every now and again, but I’ve got small hands so to dunk it with 1 hand I gotta cup it, and I lose it during the transition during windmills.
My true verts is 35" my running is 42". So I’m getting about 3 1/2 feet off of the ground. Not to sound condescending, but you’re probably not as high as you think you are. What kind of things are you doing?
I’m actually pretty positive of where my vert is at. My reach is 7’7" and from a standstill I can get rim, so basically 29". Off run I’ve been able to put down 2 foot 1 hand, and off 1 leg simple 1 hander. So a rough estimate of about 6 more inches would do me really well.
Dunking is a lot about technique. I can get 11’3" from a run, which is a full 15" over the rim (maybe 4" shy of my elbow over), and my dunks are really not that impressive. I can catch it off the backboard or from alley-oops and throw it down pretty fucking hard, but I can’t spin for shit so in a contest I’d get smoked by any good 1-foot jumper.
I think it is a combination of not practicing dunking that much (since I’m a volleyball player) and that I can only really jump off 1 foot- I can only get to 10’10" from 1 foot.
Whiteflash, just wondering what you did to get your hops up…from a regular squat/box squat/dl routine i’ve added about 4 inches to my running vert in 3 1/2 months…any suggestions?
I’ve posted this before but I thought you guys’d appreciate it. This is Kadour Zhiani from Slam Nation and I believe him to be 5’11"
