There was a little white kid out of a small town in TX a few years ago named Kyle Fountain who was rumored to be able to get 52" off of 3 steps. I’d love to be able to match that [10" to go]and having never done any jump training, I think it’s possible.
Ze, I don’t see white going before the 2nd round. Can’t handle contact, weak handle, no left hand, trouble finishing in traffic, shoots a set shot, etc… If he gets drafted it’ll be for his ability to draw fans on all-star weekend.

Hey, Bruceleewannabe, if you really want to improve, I suggest that you cut down your training volume. How many times a week are you working out?
In my opinion, just some basic strength work (Full squats, deadlifts, lunges, step-ups) 2 times per week with the supercat workout 1 or 2 times per week will get you monstrous gains. Too much work=not enough time for your body to adapt. REST=GAINS!
You should focus on bringing up your maximal and explosive strength (Squat, Deadlifts+Supercat) then move on to plyos. My 2 cents there.[/quote]
I work my legs every 3-4 days. Same w/ the Cat. Most of the time it’s every 4 days. I found out the hard way many yrs. ago from doing too much. So yah, less is best! Thanks for the input!
Yeah James White is a sick athlete for sure. He lost the McDonalad’s All-American dunk contest to David Lee a few years back.
His dunks were better but Lee was more creative (he threw the ball up, reversed his jersey, then caught the ball off the bounce and dunked it, other goofy shit like that), but I agree that he won’t get drafted that high, especially since Cincinnati is likely to miss the tournament for the first time in years.
He should’ve stayed at Florida, he’d give them that extra dimension they need this year.
Yes, I definitely agree that he Shouldn’t get drafted that high, but he most likely will. NBA teams now-a-days seem to draft everybody by “Potential” and athletic ability hoping to improve their fundamental skills after they come into the league.
An example, Marvin Williams, who didn’t even start on his college team (UNC), got drafted 2nd overall ahead of his All-American teammates! And so far this year, he hasn’t been doing that well.
Superscience, who is that?
David Lee’s dunks weren’t even half as creative, he was doin gimmicky stuff like throwin the ball up and rippin his shirt off while White was goin though his legs and slappin the glass with his off hand. White won that contest hands down, Just like I would have given the Mcd’s contest that L. James won to Shannon Brown or J.R Giddens.
The NBA does draft based on athletic ability and potential, but after 4 1/2 yrs in college White has proven that there isn’t much substance to his game. Also, his athletic ability shines in dunk contests, not in games. He doesn’t have a great [or even good] first step, his handle’s shaky, no one respects his shot, and even if none of those were concerns he still couldn’t dunk on anyone because he can’t take contact.
That kid in the pic Superscience posted has the build of a dunk waiting to happen. Serious lift combined with an unbelievable wingspan makes for the perfect dunker.
whiteflash, corey benjamin definately had one of the sickest 1 foot jumps(ie. that up and under reverse he did in the mcd’s highschool dunk contest) but there’s no way he’s better than james white off 1 foot.
All this talk about the NBA draft has me wondering how many times an analyst will refer to a player as “long.” Does it creep anybody else out how the analysts all gush over how “long” a player is. If I hear Jay Bilas talk about how a player has “nice girth” this year, I’m turning it off.
My standing vert is about 7" lower than my vert off of 3 steps [35" to 42"]. How is his only 3" lower[42" to 45"? What I’m asking is what type of strength am I lacking?
Enigma,I’m not saying C. Benjamins 1 foot is better than Whites, I’m saying they’re close. To date, Benjamin is the only person I’ve seen get a true foul line dunk in a game, and he could go up off of 2 just as well. I’ve also heard he got his first dunk in the 5th grade, which would go down as the single greatest achievement in the history of single great achievements.
Here is a pic you guys might like. Dwight Howard just about kissing the rim. I have actually seen a photo of him touching his lips to the basket but this was the closest thing I could find. This man is perhaps the finest physical specimen in the NBA. He has the longest arms and widest shoulders I have ever seen and he is very muscular by NBA standards.
James White is without a doubt the best one leg jumper. I have the video of him going between the legs from the foul line…Amazing! Being from Chicago I have to mention Ronnie Fields. He was so explosive off two feet.

Cool pic; how tall is Howard?? 6’8’’ or taller? D. Diaw in that pic. I posted is even higher than this guy but still quite impressive. Gary fuller of Powernetics @ 6 foot could graze his head against the rim. That’s prob the ultimate w/ his height & all.
The prob w/ jummping off 1 leg is that it’s so damn stressful; 2 leg jumping is the way to go I believe!
bruceleewannabe, i really think the angle of the b. diaw picture makes it look higher than it really is, still nice but seems a little deceiving.
here’s another pic of dwight howard:

I know Kelly himself said he is lacking hamstring wise as far as reactivity goes. Maybe his structure.
He is strong for his bodyweight, squat(full?) over 400lbs I believe at 165lbs in the pic I think. That’s why he has a high standing vertical jump
And it’s not like he was born jumping high, hard work in the gym over a period of years made the gains. From memory he went from a 27inch VJ to 42 with lots of years inbetween
Stuff like this don’t happen in 8 weeks like all these damn jumping programs will have you believe
You lack strength relatively speaking
Even if you have a high natural vertical jump, it doesn’t mean it will improve much more with training. Chances are you may have the strength naturally, and squatting will just display what you already have for the first 6-12 months, until you surpass your natural strength level.
To add to the list of “guys with freaky verts”… Jason Ring, currently on the AVP pro beach volleyball tour. I have read various accounts of his vert that range from 40" to 45" but most have been in magazines so take that with a grain of salt. However, he once had to get stitches on his FOREHEAD from hitting a basketball rim.
He stands at 6’2" so that is a pretty sick achievement. 46" at least, could be as high as 48" off the run if you account for the fact that he hit his forehead on it. I don’t even know if that is as high as he can get up on a max test. I have to say he’s probably the most explosive athlete I’ve ever seen in person, his vert and his armswing are just insane.
