The dunk contest should just be retired now.
740 as smooth as you’ll see:
Sideways step in the tread. Those guys spotting dont look massively confident do they. I mean - if you were Maddox wouldn’t you want 3 spotters you trusted 100%.
If he tears something by the time those 3 get the bar off of him hes gonna be hurt.
I guess the point is: it looks like each of those guys at the end might be able to squat 400lb each - but that bar comes down and they need to goblet squat 370lb each. Just seems a bit of an ask.
Btw I might be SO wrong and the pair are capable of 600-700lb squats. I’m totally judging a book by its cover.
The role of a spotter in powerlifting is ultimately to get a failed rep back to the rack while the lifter assists vs life saving sorta stuff. Catastrophes happen, of course, but in such cases it’s understood that a spotter isn’t going to be able to help, because it’s a catastrophe. Instead, they are there such that, if Maddox tries and can’t get the weight lifted, Maddox KEEPS PUSHING while the spotters give him the assistance needed to get the bar back to the rack.
One of the many forms of poor etiquette a powerlifter can engage in with their spotters is just abandoning the lift and forcing the spotters to do all the work. Especially poor form in the squat, but the bench too. Always stay with the lift.
Ye what @T3hPwnisher said. Short of death maddox will also be in on that. I think he could at least take 200 lbs off for the spotters in the worst case scenario but probably more than that. So like 800 lbs - 200 = 200 lb per spotter. No spotter is gonna react fast enough in the event of like the bar slipping out of his hands and hitting Maddox full speed. That’s what the safeties are for. They are there if he wants to use em. If he doesn’t then whatever happens is on him literally lel. I dunno if his belly compresses enough for the safeties to come into play at that height but at least they’ll take some of the load off him.
Yeah I can appreciate both your points - my wife spots me sometimes and I work on 10%. If she came take 10% of the bar I’ll do the rest. But the spotters have a 2and job which is if it goes tits up - disaster recovery.
Say something slips or tears, hell a dog gets on stage and bites the dude. After that the bars fallen on him - then what. Those 3 ain’t moving 740lb between them. Not smoothly. Not confidently.
That’s never been a spotter’s role in my experience, and expecting it of them just puts them in an unfair situation. When a disaster happens, no spotter is going to do anything helpful. It’s what makes it a disaster. At that point, anyone that can help jumps in.
Understood.
I always cringe when I see world championship events being spotted by pencilneck-looking guys. I’ve seen some bad spotting at IPF events.
You can be a pencil neck and still spot. What is that lift? 130kg, that should really be no problem for 3 underfed teens to save on their first go spotting if they even half knew what they were doing. How did the guy on the right get himself into that position? Lol
These just keep getting more insane:
That’s the most impressive lift I’ve ever seen. Fucking bonkers.
Just as a reference point:
In the 2012 WSM heats - there was a 700lb squat for reps.
Whilst some guys (Eddie Hall & Nick Best) got quiet a few (9&8 respectively). Some guys (Thor) scored 4 and one competitor didn’t manage 1. He scored 0.
Sure its not a straight comparison. It’s a “circus barbell”. But still - its close enough.
I think he’s squatted in the 700s before.
I wonder how strong his other pressing lifts could be if he specialized in them?
700lbs Incline Press? 500lbs Strict OHP? 600lbs Push Press?
Imagine he gets a 600lbs Push Press before an Olympic lifter gets a 600lbs Clean and Jerk
Drug testing does play a pretty big role there.
771 for a single. Touched the rack on the way up still smooth as silk:
I was about to share this video today. I’ve only just seen it.
The knocking the bench looked to throw him off. I wondered what it was for a while.
I think 800lb will go in the summer. But then what?
That is so fucking crazy. He’ll hit 8-hundo as long as he stays healthy. He also seems like a positive guy with a good head on his shoulders, so I’m rooting for him.
I thought 750 would be a lofty target but that was blown away and under 18 months later 771 is a training lift, 800 will go down soon.
I guess 850 is next, he still has plenty of time as he isn’t mid-30s yet.
