Julius Maddox 800lb Bench?

There has to be a limit though, right? I get that no one knows what the limits are to they find 'em, but I mean as far as human potential goes. There’s 8+ billion people on this planet and only one dude can do this. Even he has to have a ceiling.

I had to read this a few times. That in its self is a crazy statement.

800lb will go.

Indeed. But the sport of power lifting is very young really. And there are developments all the time. I can see the arbitrary limits falling away. I mean in the 70/80’s a 700lb squat was considered huge. Now we have guys pushing 1100lbs.

He’s an absolute specimen and I wish him nothing but success.
800 is definitely on the cards, but everything needs to line up perfectly.

He also needs to make sure that whoever loads the bar has a decent IQ, so that we don’t get the same result as last time!

I don’t know. He’s basically a real life Milo (lift a cow everyday guy). Linear progression forever.

Terry Todd was the first man to squat 700 lbs in the 60s, then the numbers started rising rapidly; Jon Cole did the first 900 lbs in 1972 and Lee Moran did 1003 in 1983.
Then numbers seemed to plateau for a while, with the first 1100 lbs being done by Steve Goggins in 2003.
It seems every time a physiological limit is reached someone eventually comes along and smashes past it.

There is that automatic self preservation mechanism we all have. I’m 100% this plays a part. Once you know you’re not going to die - you can push harder.

In slightly related news, here is James Strickland doing 501x8 as he goes for 700lbs at under 300lbs bodyweight

New World Record 783lbs!

Whoa! That lift was cleaner and smoother than all his other, lesser 700+ record lifts.

Was that a competition or some kind of exhibition?

IIRC, he never planned on going for 800 at the meet. Just a stepping stone meet. Based on the 783 lb stepping stone, he will have 800 if things keep going the way they are.

I am kinda bummed, because he is now benching over double what I can do (I was just above half his previous PR). I have a goal to not have anyone who can out lift me by double (without gear) on the three powerlifting lifts.

You should complain and protest until they overturn his lift and lower the record back to what it was.

Indeed. Might be easier just to bench another 7 lbs. Not sure though. 7 lbs might be a month a way or a year away.

Really, I need to plan for 405 to have some padding (not a lot of padding though). Unfortunately, some have better genetics and / or work harder than I do.

You can do it! 4 plates, Clankity-Clank! What’s a month? And really, what’s a year?

When was Maddox’s last big record lift? Back in June of last year? Even he had to go away and grind in seclusion for 7-8 months to take it to the next level.

Anyway, 405 might not be enough! Over 800 definitely looks doable for Julius based on that 783.

Haha! That’s fun!

Yeah, it isn’t a lot of padding with the 405. It is amazing to me that someone who is stronger than most people (tooting the horn here), can be half as strong as the best bencher.

What percentage of men actually lift 405 on bench in their lifetime? 1/1,000 maybe 1/10,000. Then someone else is just double that strong. It is just unreal.

Imagine the amount of benching bullshit this guy puts up with. 800lbs is the WR? Shit man, I was doing 700 in highschool and I never really benched seriously AND I was nowhere near as fluffy as you!

Haha.

Everyone and their mother claims to have benched 405 in high school, and then suddenly got “bad knees” or a “bad back” and can’t train anymore. It’s somehow always 4 plates too. Never 315 or 495.

As for Maddox… They might as well start the Road to 1000 for him haha. I’m fully convinced that by the end of my lifetime we’ll see a 1000 lbs raw bench, and a 1500 lbs raw squat and deadlift. Just a matter of time and the right genetic specimen taking interest in the sport.

A buddy of mine is a pretty solid bencher (low 400s at a BW of like 165 lbs). But he is 5’2". People just assume they could do his lifts because he is short. He gets all the bench bullshit plus the being short bullshit at the same time. He has been going up in weight lately, and if there is nothing or anyone near him as a reference he looks like a shit brick house at 175 lbs.

How about being a crazy deadlifter and feeling no one should be able to bench more than you deadlift. I am hoping to crack the 800lb mark at 198 tested soon unless a minor groin injury I have changes my plans.
