I found my hands got ripped up worse when I used to use gloves. I would suggest just training your grip so it gets stronger and the bar doesn’t slip as much. I started using a pair of 100 lb grippers that a friend’s bf lent me, and they have helped my grip a ton.
I just carry a little tupperware container with some gymnastic chalk and rub my hands off in the garbage. Pretty easy to clean up. My hands looked like that before and they hurt like fuck, but eventually they heal up even stronger. I agree with cbear that a fatter grip can be more challenging (actually ordering a fat grip attachment from efs), but whether chalk, fat grip, or raw, anything is better than gloves…just my 2 cents ![]()
Chalk is very cheap off amazon.com and will make you love deadlifts all over again.
cant remember if its been covered… what kind of grip do you use?
i use mixed, which i hear is less slippery than double overhand, and i still ripped one off… if the pic attaches. i love the 2 red streaked bruises on the other two baby callouses i still have.
I’m definitely with RBlue and Shaunar. Avoid the gloves. You can definitely sneak some chalk in. I’m assuming you pull mixed?
Thanks for your 2 cents on this everyone. So chalk should help protect my hands AND help my grip? Didn’t know that. Chalk in a tupperware it is. As for my grip issues, I do pull mixed. But with open sore, pulling at all is a pain. I just couldn’t rep my rack pulls yesterday which I should have been able to. The open sores were complaining too much.

I’ll start carrying tape and chalk in my gym bag. The sores usually rip once I’m at the gym.
As for the press I used some light weight. I pressed 100lbs a while back as my PR. 60 lbs is a good warmup or finisher, but your right my upper body feels pummeled.
There is some seriously good work going on in here.
I haven’t ripped any callouses yet, so obviously I’m just not lifting hard enuf.

naw, that just means you have the natural hands of a rock star warrior while we need to earn our badges ;). Maybe frequency has something to do with it? Perhaps with a couple of days rest in between lifting you allow your hands to heal properly which prevents this whole mess.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot is there a special tape recommended for these situations?
I’ve never ripped a callous either. My hands are very tough and not especially feminine feeling.
Interesting that you mention MRSa, CBear. I was diagnosed with it about two weeks ago in my left ring finger. Dangerous, dangerous stuff. Put on massive antibiotics. When the culture results came back, it was only strep G. But I cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping open wounds covered in the gym. Next to hospitals and nursing homes, gyms are at the top of the list in terms of MRSa. And wash your damn hands!

Sorry to hear about that Snap. Sounds nasty. I always use the anitbacterial gel like 5 times while I’m in the gym. Plus I wash my hands once I’m done.

Sorry Owlie - the husband went through the leftover but the recipe is very simple.
-split butternaut squash into 2
-empty seeds
-place skin up in baking dish
- add about an inch of water in the dish.
-sprinkle water with dried rosemary to “perfume” the flesh - bake at 350 for 35-45 minutes depending on the size - basically whe you pull it out, the flesh should have the texture of mashed potatoes.
-brown onion in olive oil
-add ground turkey (or any ground meat)
-sprinkle with salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, sage and parsley to taste (I like a half teaspoon of each herb)
-add a small can of diced tomatoes, bring to a boil and let simmer for a few minutes.
serve the meat in the cavity of the squash for a pretty presentation and dig in with a big fork and a fat brain ![]()
Bonne Appetit!
Yummy!! I am definitely going to try out this recipe, I’m not even a big squash fan, but it sounds delicious!
Does sound pretty tasty!!
That DOES sounds delicious, and makes me hungry even though I just had dinner.
How is the squat form coming along?

I’ll poste a vid this weekend when the gym isn’t so packed. It’s funny somedays I just step up place my feet and drop to the ground and it feels really smooth and other days, I can’t figure out why, but it feels awkward with the same weight. I started removing my old running shoes and squating in my socks. That has helped with my feet and knees. I’m thinking of getting rid of my old running shoes but I’m not sure what to switch them for.
