Inspired to Fix My Diet

Hey all

Well ive been reading up on all hardgainer Physique Clinics and its inspired me to fix up my diet a little. I know theres HEAPS of information on what to eat etc but ive put together my own - ive done this because i know its something i can stick to and i like all the food in it. So anyway does it look ok? (trying to bulk up - ive gone up from 62kgs to 74 in the past two years but its stopped progressing)

830am - protein shake - EGG WHITES

9:30am - bowl of museli, green tea - 1 or 2 ORANGES

Pre workout
11:00am - banana, blue berries - ALMONDS

Post workout
1:00pm - protein shake - EGG WHITES

1:20pm - chicken breast/salad/roasted veggies - 2 TOMATOES

4:00pm - oj, nut bar

7:00pm - steak/fish/chicken/pasta, veggies

10:30pm - celery, protein shake, BROCCOLI

(things in lower case are what im having now - things in capitals are what im going to add)

thanks for any help!

All I see is some broccoli and tomatoes which aren’t exactely packed full of calories.

Forget egg whites. Have the whole damn egg.

Nut bar? Sounds like shit. Have nuts.

Instead of 3 protein shakes maybe have some yoghurt or cheese @ 10:30 (or don’t if you really like protein shakes).

How many calories are you getting each day?

Here is what I see of your diet:

830am - protein

9:30am - carbs, green tea

Pre workout
11:00am - carbs - protein

Post workout
1:00pm - protein

1:20pm - protein - carbs

4:00pm - carbs - protein

7:00pm - protein - carbs

10:30pm - carbs - protein

Now, most of your carbs are coming from veggies or fruits. Some (oj, muselli) is coming from other sources. Your protein is good, but you have very little fat in your diet.

Feel free to read up on the stickies at the top of the beginners thread. The articles linked to in them should help you figure out what to do with your diet to achieve your goals.

You do need more calories but there is nothing fundamentally wrong. Lots of veg is good but they are filling. You need more high calorie carbs and more good fats.

Almonds are good but not pre workout. You don’t want fats then, you want carbs and protein.

Never eat egg whites alone. If you are sensitive to dietary cholestrol, just eat one yolk, otherwise, eat whole eggs. Don’t cook them on high heat because that oxidises the cholestrol which is not good.

Add some brown rice with lung, take extra fats in the form of fish oil and olive oil. At you 4pm meal, drop the OJ. Fruit juice is only for morning meal or post workout. Too much sugar. Eat the almonds and fruit instead. Post workout have some high GI carbs with your shake.

830am - protein shake - EGG WHITES ::eat the whole egg + a carb (fruit or a grain if you handle those well)

9:30am - bowl of museli, green tea - 1 or 2 ORANGES ::add a protein source, tuna, beef, etc.

Pre workout
11:00am - banana, blue berries - ALMONDS ::add a better protein source

Post workout
1:00pm - protein shake - EGG WHITES ::skip the egg whites all together here

1:20pm - chicken breast/salad/roasted veggies - 2 TOMATOES ::best meal so far

4:00pm - oj, nut bar ::junk food, eat protein and more veggies and sweet potato

7:00pm - steak/fish/chicken/pasta, veggies ::Good meal

10:30pm - celery, protein shake, BROCCOLI ::good, add some peanut butter or olive oil.

thanks everyone. Yeah i think ive gone too healthy now (i used to eat a lot of crap). My bodyfat has dropped heaps which is a good thing but i just cant put any weight on. Ill have to change a few things around lol…thanks

“Too Healthy” doesn’t exist. You have great food choices, just not much of them, you dig? stick with the healthy food choices, but add more. You need more protein, and I’d suggest more healthy fats–you’re trying to gain weight, and they’re calorie dense and good for you at the same time.

That’s the take home message here. You have a good diet and it just needs tweaking. There are a lot of guys out there who think it’s OK to eat at Burger King all day when they are trying to bulk and it’s not. Keep eating the way you are and make the improvements suggested and you should make the progress your looking for.

ok well im going shopping later tonight to see if i can prepare for the week - with adding better proetien sources to some of my meals, how do you guys do it? I dont really like tuna so what else? how do you have beef at 930am lol

Steak and eggs make a good breakfast. So do leftovers.

Well, it’s ok under certain circumstances—say for instance you’re Professor X (who saw that example coming?) and you need to cram 7,000 calories down your throat to grow. Ain’t no way you’re making that all clean! But if you don’t require 6,000-7,000 calories, then it’s not.

And you and I both know, that hardy anyone, not even Dave Tate, needs that many calories, even though he thought he did at one point.
