Difference in the goals of the times. NO ONE wanted huge legs back then much bigger than that. Tom Platz was considered a disproportionate freak when he first hit the stage.

Well let’s be serious here, Platz WAS disproportionate. He really should have brought his upper body up more… But still, insane wheels.
Legs alone don’t make you a Mr. Olympia, though.
Still, Columbu’s legs looked completely undeveloped when they were competing against each other that one O… And upper bodies were not that different, except for chest and lats of columbu…

I never really liked Franco, found him cocky and arrogant just threw reading some stuff on him and even in the pumping iron video. Platz on the other hand seemed to be a really nice guy, very humble, and just a genuine person. I think Platz should’ve had that one and I do agree with you that his upper body needed to be braught up a lot though.
BTW I just shot you an email.

Very true, but where Platz was actually mocked by quite a few people of the time for that, today he would get praise for his development and simply be told that he needs to bring his upper body up to match. Branch Warren is another who had huge legs when he became a pro and underdeveloped upper body and he never caught the flack that Platz did when he first hit the scene.

I remember early pictures of Warren competing… His arms in a side-chest looked like they could fit into his legs about 20 times ![]()
Wonder if he’s going to be at the next O? There aren’t many “freaks” (well, okay, plenty of freaks but you know what I mean) in the lineup…
I agree with you guys here, i started a fat 240lb and had to lean down.
My goal was Brad Pitt in fight club, after 3 weeks in the gym i decided i was not putting all that time and effort to look like everyone else if i was wearing a shirt, so my new goal was Zane.
After working out for a couple of more month my goal is set, i want to look like Dennis Wolk and hit an Elite Total at a PL meet like Justin Harris did.
Currently going to bulk to 250 or so and see where that leaves me after a cut.

I do believe Mentzer was right at the line to consider himself a super-heavyweight.
I don’t think some of you understand how big some of those guys were back then. Even Frank Zane was carrying more muscle than most of the pictures I’ve seen on this site.
Mentzer was a big boy. I think you need to look up some of the guys in NPC to get a better understanding of what they look like.
Jo Jo Ntiforo (above) is a super heavy.
Mike and Arnold competed in the same class though and no one ever talks about Arnold as a freak. As much as i respect Arnold and his contributions, i think he’s greatly overrated as a BBer. even someone like Mariusz Pudzianowski who is 300 pounds doesnt have that “freakish” appearance. you see that hes very big and you can gauge that he has enormous strength by looking at him but you wouldnt disgust most people looking like him, but then again i guess it all comes down to the fact 90% of the time you see a BBer its in his contest shape, oils and tanners included.
my longterm goal ATM is 230 and im at 200 now (6 feet) so depending on when i start using (wink wink) it could be anywhere from 3 to 5 years? but thats just a guess.[/quote]
You sound like someone who has NEVER seen any of these guys in person. Trust me, if you actually saw Mariusz in person, he would look pretty damn “freakish” to you at over 300lbs. I am no where near as big as he is and the reactions I get let me know that most are under-estimating how big these guys are.
Arnold was very much considered a “freak” when he hit the scene. No one had seen anyone like that before so I am not sure why you think otherwise. It is like you are using today’s standards to judge bodybuilders from 60 years ago. No one 60 years ago was walking around weighing over 200lbs ripped at average height unless they were a professional bodybuilder or pro athlete. Today, you can see 2 or 3 guys who don’t even compete who look like that in some gyms.
Mariusz Pudzianowski is a fucking minotaur

You’re fucking kidding me right? First of all your first paragraph is ridiculous. I saw an NPC competitor at my job once in HS and he was a total monster, it was insane. These guys are a lot bigger than you give them credit for. Go to a higher level BB show or a strongman event and then you will understand.
Also the fact that you are even suggesting that you HAVE to have steroids to go from 200-230 at 6 ft means you are seriously confused.
Add me to the big list.
300lbs is the goal for me.
No less.

youre right, i havent seen any of these guys in real life. the closet ive gotten was some rediculously huge guy at the beach who look like he mas made out of clay and left me feeling very emasculated.
i consider Arnold that way because when you contrast him to other pro BBers, Cutler, Coleman, any mass-monster really youll see theres a very big difference in their aesthetic.

k, what else?
Although I am training for powerlifting, I need to get big. I’m a damn beanpole right now (205) and need to be at least 275. Fairly lean, but no need to be shredded.
As a frame of reference, I have seen a pro bb’er. Skip Lacour trains at the same gym as I do, and hangs out at the pool where I lifeguard. That guy is a beast!

That’s simply because of WHEN he competed. Arnold wouldn’t even place in most contests today unless he made improvements. By today’s standards, his legs are too small and his conditioning never even came close.
Also, this whole concept of mass monsters doesn’t really hold right now. Coleman is out and Cutler is no doubt right behind him. Guys like Heath, Wolf, Warren, Martinez and Greene are now the new school of bodybuilding and they have learned from the mistakes of those in the past. Huge GH guts don’t win contests anymore.
That means pay more attention to NPC to see what guys on that level actually look like just before they turn pro.
The average guy walking around over 250lbs relatively lean in the off season under 6 feet tall is going to look like a beast if you stand next to them. That was why I jumped on your comment before. The average person has never seen 20+" arms up close on someone else.
most people will never get to a point where they’ll look “too big” naturally, and they probably couldnt even if they did everything right for 15 years (i suppose thats oppinion, but if you think otherwise this is probably not the place for you anyways)
-so why not just always try to get as big and strong as possible, and then you always have a goal and are making sure you’re always maximizing your progress rather than trying to get as ripped as possible every time a girl looks at you
I think if you look too big, then you are too big in certain areas, and too small in others. For example if youve got 20 inch arms and relatively small delts, your arms will “look to big” for your body.
Ive never seen someone with a big back get critisized that their back is “too big”, because what the hell could it hurt to have a big back ? It could only help you. Having super huge biceps however, is pointless if you dont have the support strength to go with it.

I don’t have any huge dudes at my gym, but one time when I was curious I put some tape at 22inches and held it around my arm. It was an interesting experience.
