How to quickly recover from a cold

I’m currently in the middle of track season, and got a pretty bad cold bout 5 days ago, I’m better in terms of congestion, but I’m kinda weak physically, and I have a pretty big track meet on sat, I compete in the discus and shot put, so strength is kinda important, does anyone know of supplements or any kind of remedy that will speed my recovery?

I have a gram of vitamin c every hour & I get over a cold 2 or 3 days sooner than usual.

Echinacea, goldenseal, Astragalus…all per label instructions. The amino acid l-arginine is also known to have anti-viral properties I’d take at least 5 grams in divided doses a day. Also aspirin is said to help as it breaks up some chemical that sustains colds. Zinc, but if and only if you catch it within the first 48 hours, and preferably earlier. That is about all I can think of right now. Oh yeah green tea, lots of it.

Now this is ironic! There aren’t all that many people on this board, yet I meet someone who has the same first name and is also a thrower in college with almost the same events. I’ll be joining the Grand Valley State University (Allendale, MI) track team next season. Since I’m not a big guy (170lbs) I’ll probably compete in discus, javelin, and want to try out long jump and triple jump as well. Where do you go to school?

With regards to your question, I don’t really know what to tell you, but for the future take a vitamin C tablet regularly to avoid getting sick. I take one every day and generally live a healthy lifestyle and only get sick about once or twice a year. Good luck and throw far.

Zicam(Zinc nasal gel) has been shown to decrease the time of a cold from 9 days to about 2-3 days. However, you need to take it in the first 24 hours for best results. It does improve cold symptoms so you could try it now to see if it helps you. You can get it at most pharmacys.

I do exactly what Drax said. And it works.

On a related note, i found that here in Europe, you can go into a pharmacy and ask for pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in powdered form, and it turns out to be a hell of a lot cheaper, i bought 100 gr for 5 Euros ( i think this is around 4 dollars). A lot cheaper than buying those damn tablets.

hey i live right near grandvalley… thats so funny

Two tablespoons of baking soda in warm water morning and evening for three days. Your cold will be GONE.

Sound weird? Well, it works because it shifts the pH of your body slightly. Most viruses are extremely pH specific and when you alter your body chemistry a bit they can't survive... which is one of the theorys of why OJ works when you are sick.

This world is even smaller than I thought. Since you didn’t mention it, I’m assuming you’re not a GVSU student, but do you work out at the Field House? I don’t train there any more since I prefer to train alone, but Grand Valley’s facilities are some of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s free for students of course, but I think everybody else has to pay membership dues.

I also second (third?) Drax’s advice. Works like a charm. (And if you’re not supplementing with Vitamin C on a regular basis, you should get into the habit. I take C and E pretty much every day, and generally go for about two years between colds.)

Michelle, that is definitely the weirdest advice I’ve ever heard for colds - but it sounds like one of those things that’s so strange it’d work. Where did you come across that little tidbit?
