How Much Should I Be Lifting

for starters i dont have words to express how big of a fat, out of shape, (unable to do 10 pushups), pussy i was 3 years ago. i think i have come a long way, but i am starting to get more serious and need some goals.
i am 6’3, 200 pounds, about 15% body fat. i would post numbers on what i do lift but i want serious advice not a comedy forum.
also advice on what i should weigh would be nice.

i believe you should weigh 150lbs and lift 275 imo…you are a retard

You should be lifting significantly more than you did at this time last year.

You should be deadlifting 675lb and benching 480lb.

ok maybe the way i asked this question is dumb. i am looking for an averaged opinion on what a 21, 6foot 3inch 200pound male should be able to lift. bench press, squat, deadlift are the basics, but other exercises are good too.

by the way unless your someone experienced just giving advice in the beginner forum, feel free to through up your numbers.

Your results will depend on your own genetic potential and how much work you put into it. You should only be comparing yourself to your own performance. However, it is natural to want to see how you are doing relative to others.

Most people should achieve novice levels and are capable of attaining intermediate if they focus their training. Of course Contrl is a world class powerlifter so his standards are a little diffrent.

Stu

Wow, very helpful URL there, stuward. I think I’ve seen one like that, only it split things by “Beginner, Collegiate, World-Class” or something of the sort.

But now I feel dirty, I’m elite level on everything but the power clean.

Is that link correct? if those are the standards those are really low.

I would say some pretty good lifts to strive for as a beginner are 365 squat, 275 bench and 405 deadlift. These are lifts that anyone can achieve, but you will have to work for them.

Good luck

They seem low if you compare them to strength athletes like weightlifters or powerlifters. If you read the descriptions, these athletes are all elite by these standards. If you consider the average non-strength athlete they make more sense.

Ok, I was about to say there is no way in hell I should be advanced status with the squats with only 2 years of doing them.

Look at what you were doing when you started, and look where you are at every 3-6 months. If your numbers keep increasing, then your good. But if nothing went up after months you know your doing something wrong. Those numbers are good for ball-park, but its what your personal progress is.

John, I agree. I thought they seemed a bit low but if you look at the “average person” --a lazy overweight fat ass who doesn’t train or push himself, its way more reasonable.

Ok maybe that was a bit harsh, but more or less true. Sure they’re some studs at your local gym and on this site who can shame those standards but it seems ok for ‘most’.

Of course we’re all striving for the elite status.

Your deadlift is only 100 pounds higher than your bench? I bet you must be one of those beach-muscle guys who bench and curl 5 times a week and…

Wait a minute…

I get it! You bench with gear! Hah, figured you out, you cheater! I bet you’re on the juice as well. We had a whole thread about how pathetic that is and although nobody could offer a rationale why it would be cheating as long as no rules are broken, what I gathered from that thread: If you type it often enough, it becomes true.

You should be ashamed of yourself, mister. Seriously.

Thats not what I lift. It’s the answer to what he should be lifting.
