Right now $10 a month. my gym was originally a golds that i payed $40 a month which was pretty good considering it was 24/7 and the $40 price tag kept most of the human cockroaches out since the average cost of a gym around here ranges is about $20. About 3 months ago it was bought by a franchise called Max Fitness, which is similar to Planet Fitness, Since then it has gone to the shitter with the recent removal of the dead lift area,8 a.m.- 10 pm. M-Sat. hours and 2 p.m.-5p.m. sunday hours as well as the lower price attracting the human cockroaches that were previously confined to the YMCA.

I lift at home in a garage gym, which if you take the total cost divided by the months I’ve been using it seriously, has cost me something like $90 a month. If I were to start over again, there’s a few things I’d skip (really just the two kettlebells), but for the most part, all the equipment gets pretty good use.
Over a 5 year period, it’ll probably end up costing right around $15 a month, after factoring in adding a few more things.
I really think the benefits of being able to work out when I want, without having to wait for equipment is worth it. You just have to be good about motivating yourself.
Current setup:
Half power rack
Adjustable bench
400ish pounds of Oly plates
Fractional plates
Weight tree
2 Oly barbells (one for squats, one for curls and overhead pressing… and the pair works as dip bars)
EZ Curl bar
3 Oly dumbbells (two set up for lateral raises, one for pullovers/rows)
10 and 20lb pairs of dumbbells
Lifting chains (homemade)
35 and 53lb kettlebells
Dip belt
Thick floor padding
6 or so pairs of heavy collars (I was Steinborning the bar for squats before I bought the rack)
Plus, some pulleys and carabiners from a jury-rigged cable system I was building. Right now I just use the cable stacks at the apartment gym, but I have the parts to make my own plate loaded cable system.
This is pretty close to a perfect gym for me, equipment-wise. Now, ideally I’d also have a small-scale Turkish bathhouse with a steam room and pool… but I can wait on that one.

I get access to a fully-equipped (sans monolift) powerlifting gym, Oly platforms + bumper plates, some strongman implements, kettlebells, DBs up to 140lbs, and hot women (unfortunately, most of them don’t go into the powerlifting gym). It’s also pretty good because all the curlbros are too intimidated to go into the PLing gym, so I always get a rack quickly.
I feel pretty lucky to have this.
