I’ve trained in some truly ‘great’ gyms. My wife of course always felt that they were dingy and dirty, without the latest cushiony machines. To me, while I do appreciate a well kept facility, I think the atmosphere is more conducive to being productive than having the latest cutting-edge-must-have-can’t-build-a-good-physique-without-it equipment.

My university gym was great. They had pretty much everything you really needed but I think what made it great is that I met some lifting friends that I haven’t separated from and I also trained with the S&C coaches in the mornings. Also, the female volleyball, soccer, and softball teams trained around the same time so we got to check out the chicks and make them uncomforatble as we squeezed 3 moderately built yet a little pudgy guys into bench shirts and squat suits. hahah. Some of the heaviest lifts I’ve performed were in that gym but boy did we do some dumb stuff.
The year after I graduated supposedly it became an athlete only gym.
$0…for me it is the optimal gym. 5 minutes away from my house, I have a key, 24 hour access, basketball courts.
Xsport Military Discount- 2yrs/$420 (regularly $520)
La Fitness- 2yrs/$300
Both give access to all gyms in the US
note:
My LaFitness membership excludes me from a few signature clubs
Im pretty pleased with the facilities

I am with you, the gym I want to go to is dingy and dirty as heck LOL but the owner is an old school powerlifter and a trainer and he is there at the door everyday… This is a GYM not a fitness center like I go to now… Planet Fitness…

I love this gym…it’s like metroflex…only in Indiana lmao
I pay about $15/month. They claim it’s $10, but with all the random fees it ends up being about 15. Overall it’s one of the best gyms I’ve been to. There are tons of huge guys. The weight area is huge and separate from the machines/cardio/etc. The “culture” of the weight area is great. Of course there are some fools there, but they tend not to get in my way. 1 rack and 1 cage. I almost never end up waiting. People are respectful. Some guy was doing SRCs in a complex (there is a little area people use for Deads/etc next to the cage. When I asked if I could use the cage he said “of course” (or something close)…I seriously don’t think I even interrupted his complex (I waited for his rest period and he acted immediately).
I’ve paid about $100/month before. It was the worst gym I’ve even been to, but the best location. Horrible “culture.” Limited weight area. And the damn trainers kept bringing in older folks to do random stupid exercises…for example, picking up two 2kg dumbbells and “swinging them” back and forth from the hip. I got a membership b/c it was 2 blocks from my apartment and I could walk there.
Another gym I went to was about 80/month and similar (but not as bad) as the one above. I actually quit that gym to go to one that was 30 min from my place. It cost something like $4/use. It was some kind of community gym where you would buy a “ticket” at the front and deposit it into a box in the front of the weightroom. It was an honors system and I don’t think anyone ever checked me. VERY limited equipment, LOTS of space, and a great “culture.” It was an older crowd, but filled with serious folks.
Honestly, the best gyms I’ve been too have also been the cheapest. That said, I’ve never found a hardcore place that would have been close enough to go to.

The hardcore one I want to join is not to far but I might have to settle for a commercial gym due to the fact they have child care…That would open up my possible workout times…

I remember back when I was doing PT part time and not really digging it, instead of quitting, I kept one client I only saw a couple of times each week so I could ride out a free membership.
These days, it just costs me an 8x10 signed pic for the wall by the front desk ![]()

hahah ya Stu i feel ya, that’s pretty much what i do there.

Lol, I remember the head trainer would constantly put new clients on my schedule, and I’d move them onto the other trainers’ rosters when she wasn’t around.

I used to pull the keep a few clients in order to train at the gym trick as well. I was and am much happier since I kept an eye on craigslist and gym closures/sell offs and invested in my own equipment. As others have stated, for less than a grand you can easily equip yourself to enjoy lifting in your own environment whenever you want.
I currently do not have space in my living quarters for my equipment, so I have it in a storage unit. This means that I pay $80 per month. That’s more than I would pay for a gym membership, but I also use the space to, you guessed it, store my extra crap that I don’t want to get rid of. I have made more progress than I ever made in a gym. If you are the self-motivated type, then I recommend buying your own equipment and finding a place to house it.
My company has a corporate membership to my gym, and I also get 1/2 of it paid for by insurance as preventative wellness or whatever. I end up paying $25 a month, taken straight out of my paycheck.
$400 annual fee for me, wifey, and daughter.
I have been going to the Gold’s by my work for maybe 4-5 years now? I have grown to hate it. They have not invested or maintained it well at all. Always broken shit, crappy music and D-Bag HS kids wearing those damned self made ‘nipple’ shirts to show off their swole lats. That being said I pay 10$ a month and it has ample squat racks so I am still there.
What the hell is a self-made nipple shirt?
