How Do You Guys Zap a Cold at First Sign?

I second the cayenne pepper for congestion and sore throats. Also, I drink even more water at the onset of a cold.

I read somewhere once (Death by Diet) that viruses cannot survive in an pH+ environment… those suggesting lemon are spot on. As it breaks down, it raises your body’s pH and prevents viruses from spreading. I prefer lime, though, as I’ve heard it’s effect is stronger, and I think it tastes better. I drink .5-1 liter of water every day with at least 1 lime sliced and juiced into it.

haven’t been “sick” in 7 years, and I work in a pharmacy. exposed to all kinds of nasty shit. [/quote]

Actually, lemons are high in acid which has a LOW pH. The human body adjusts it’s pH balance throughout the day using your lungs (increasing and decreasing CO2 as needed) and kidneys (producing bicarb.). Having said that, even IF eating a lemon caused your pH to LOWER (which it won’t) your body would balance itself quickly and efficiently. BTW- lemons and limes do have some (not a lot) of vitamin C (as well as other healthy stuff- I’m sure).

I’d say- if your have a sore throat- train. If you have a fever, body aches, etc.- don’t train. You’re lucky if you don’t ever get sick, but since health clubs are BREEDING GROUNDS for germs (no one washes hands or equipment) expect to get the flu (don’t train;) once a year.

I appreciate the effort, and the base logic behind your post. I’ll go dig up the book and quote the physiological explanation.

but from what I remember, they are acidic at ingestion, and when they break down, i.e., digestion, they help to raise your body’s pH. dark green vegetables and EFA’s are supposed to have similar effects.

the last time I brought this up it was a little more related to training/muscle soreness…

a serving of black beans has 6x more antioxidants than an orange, whenever i got the cold/sick feeling creeping up on me, i’d just have a meal of black beans (3cans or so) & wouldnt get the cold or get sick, on top of that, charles poliquin said he gets sick every 3 or 4 years thanks to supplementing 4g of vitaminC a day

Dress uncomfortably warm if you have to go to work and take an airborne every hour to two hours. I have beaten many colds in the beginning stages this way.

I also stopped rubbing my eyes or putting my hands in my face when I am at the gym. I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my car and always use it before driving out of the gym parking lot. Gyms are notorious for spreading germs.

Thera-Flu knocks that shit out quick for me…always does the trick.

Squats and milk.

Well you should be taking 4000 iu of Vit D3 per day anyways. And probably 4-5 G of Vit C. When I feel a cold coming on (like the one I am just getting over) I take Vit C 1 gram per hour until I hit my serum levels. Well how do you know when you have maxed out your Vit c and your body can’t hold anymore? You will have Diahreea.

Don’t worry, it is usually only 1 or 2 times and once your body gets through that, you are back to normal, Pounding a few glasses of water at the onset (you will instantly feel when it starts) also helps get you back to normal quick. After that stick with 5 G vit C per day and you will stay very elevated. I also take a couple Garlic pills per day. Two pills is equal to a few whole cloves. It’s just dehydrated and pressed raw garlic, so it’s easier to take a lot of it in the pill form instead of downing fresh cloves.

Black or green tea all day helps too. Also if it’s a sinus thing, get a neti pot, it helps relieve the symptoms and possibly will stop a sinus infection from moving to the lungs.

Mainly I rest and drink lots of water.

I’d read this about muscle anabolism and catabolism in regards to acid/base balance of blood.
Increasing the alkalinity of the blood had did not increase anabolism, and actually decreased muscle building hormones. FYI. Lemme know if you find a different study/argument. I’m interested.

If you have a cold or flu, an antibiotic isn’t going to help one bit.

I’ve had success in the past with these products:

I also:

*Wash hands frequently
*take Vit. C
*Garlic
*Stay hydrated
*Get plenty of sleep

I got raped by a secondary infection from a cold… before the cold started I was using a neti pot every day as soon as I felt the symptoms, sanitizing surfaces and downing nothing but water and cough syrup… I got a low grade fever for three days… then went up to 100 for two days now its back down. I’m taking penicillin now.

Neti pot I think is only effective in preventing colds

Tea is a diuretic?

im gona try garlic and lemon next time lol

I don’t wash my hands much, aside from after using the washroom. I don’t give a shit about germs. I share drinks all the time. If I drop food on the floor in my house and sometimes outdoors, I usually eat it. I’m pretty careless about all this and I really almost never get sick much. I owe a lot of it to healthy eating but even when I eat a lot of junk food, I find I’m still healthy.

Having said that, when I do get sick on the odd occasion, I always have tea with lemon and honey and keep warm. Usually I’ll train through it. The worst I had was very recently I got inflamed tonsils from my girlfriend but I just popped painkillers and trained through that. I had some of my best workouts that week. I lost 7 pounds though… Anyway, I digress…

Basically tea (any kind) with lots of lemon and honey and keeping super warm FTW!!

i just drink more water than usually and definately still go to the gym and do cardio to sweat it out. It seems when i try to “rest” i just end up getting worse. Exercising seems to make sense bc it raises your body temp which is a less than hospitable environment for the pathogen. Tea with honey helps as well. Also for congestion mucinex is gold.

All I do when I get sick is foam roll and take Cold-FX.

… but yeah, the Cold FX stuff works ridiculously well.

Boil some red wine and let it cool enough to where you can drink it before you go to bed. You will sweat like you are in a sauna, the idea is to sweat out whatever is ailing you.
