I’m around teenagers all day, being a high school teacher. I used to get cold after cold.
Since I began drinking a yogurt drink called Danactive, I never get sick anymore. It supposedly has 10 times the stuff in it that’s good for you, compared to regular yogurt. I drink one in the AM and one before bed.
So, since there are some well-educated folks on here, is Danactive a scam and I’m just lucky, or is it the real deal?
Also, any other unusual things folks do to avoid the common cold?

I’ll take Airborne a couple times a day for a day or two if I feel like a cold is about hit. So far it seems to work pretty well.
Yea i heard that stuff works well. I might give it a try too.

I used to drink so-called ‘probiotic’ yoghurt drinks, until a friend (who’s seriously into healthy nutrition, and whatnot) told me that to be effective, each intake of ‘good’ bacteria needs to be around the 4 billion organism mark. Yoghurt drinks contain just a fraction of this unfortunately.
I bought some pills that have 4 billion bacteria per dose (4 different types) and have been taking them for a while. My guts and digestion have never seemed so healthy. I very rarely fart anymore (and if you knew me, you’d know what a big change that is, lol). Mind you I did cut out dairy at around the same time.
Another benefit to probiotics is after taking any form of antibiotics. Besides killing the bacteria that are making you sick, antibiotics will kill off your intestinal flora. You need to repopulate your gut with the appropriate bacteria as soon as possible, as you obviously need optimum digestive function, plus other bacteria who aren’t so ‘friendly’ can multiply, due to the lack of competition, and seriously do you harm.
What are these pills and are they available in America? Or other ones? I have had lingering colds all winter, helped along by the [now] single-digit Michigan temperatures. Not a huge impact on my life and training but still damn annoying. I just can’t quite seem to get completely better.

Okay, call me a nut but then try it too and see if it works.
You know when you start to feel the infection in your throat? It has that weird coughy not right feeling? And then your body kinda feels weird/bad too?
Right before bed, you take an s-load of Tiger Balm (Use the hot stuff) and you slather it on your throat. (Kinda like Vicks Rub, but I think you do that on your chest). This is on the entire throat. (I even put some on my cheeks and forehead so I really fry.)
Then go to bed. IF you wake up in the night and it stops burning put more on.
I did this once and I woke up in the night and my throat was bright red and covered in sweat. It really looked like some stuff was going on. Then I woke up. Infection gone!
I have done this three times and it has worked every time. I may have to do it for a few nights, but it’s as if the infection doesn’t like the environment the balm creates.
I was also thinking that the balm draws blood to the area and what’s in the extra blood fights it off. Or maybe it a placibo effect, who cares?
I know it sounds crazy. But it’s five buck for some Tiger Balm. So you got nothing to lose to try it.
If you do it and it works, perhaps you could send me a small gift like a puppie or a date with your 20 year old sister or girlfreind.
After reading some Linus Pauling, I decided to not get a flu shot this year and see what very high doses of Vitamin C could do for me.
For background, I tend to get a cold that knocks me out for 3-4 days at least twice a year, if not more. Also, I coach high school soccer, and have the delight of being exposed to an entire school’s worth of illness via my team. This year 10 of my players have missed at least one day of training or a match due to illness, so there’s definitely been things “going around”.
I’ve been taking 5-8 GRAMS of vitamin C a day, and on the couple occasions where I’ve felt my throat tightening up (the precursor to every illness I get), I’ve upped the dosage to an immediate 5 grams, with 1-2 grams every hour until my bowels really loosen.
Apparently the explosive toilet trip is your sign of having taken all of the vitamin that you can handle for the time being. That all said, I haven’t been sick since starting the regimen, and the 3 times where I’ve felt something and upped the dosage the “illness” feelings have gone away no later than the next morning, but usually the same day.
I don’t know if I sound kooky or weird…but a few bucks a month for some vitamin C is a better deal to me than doctor’s offices and missed work/training/pleasure.
Anytime I start feeling congested, I sweat it out. High intensity cardio (jumprope, burpees, whatever) for about half an hour until there are puddles of sweat under you.
Then, make a broth from the seasoning packet of a spicy-flavored Top Ramen package, like Cajun Shrimp or Picante Chicken. I throw the noodles away–I just drink the spicy broth.
Follow up with a hot shower. By this time you’ll feel like a limp noodle, and probably a bit dehydrated, so drink some water or tea.
I always feel better within a couple of hours. I haven’t been sick for about five years now. (And I have kids.)
I use a few things to maintain a strong immume system like probiotics, drinking green tea and a multi-vitamin. When a I feel something coming on I’ll up my does of the foregoing and also take zinc, echinacha (some people claim it doesn’t work but it works for me) vitamin C and elderberry extract. Also an earlier post talked about probiotic yogurt drinks. I think it should be noted there is a big difference between yogurt drinks and kefir which you can read about here:
Well I know this sounds weird but it is true for me.
I was the type of kid in H.S who would get 8-10 colds a year, plus the flue. Plus almost everytime I got a cold I would get a cold sore. My mom used to be worried about my immune system being weak. Also, I never took the flue shot (been living in the US for 6+ years now), and sometimes took advil, robitosin, or whatever for my colds when my parents forced me to.
Well things didn’t change in the 1st 2 years of H.S but in the last 2, and then 3 college years the count of colds went down from 8 to 0!!!. And now, I haven’t gotten a cold in 12months straight! I guess my immune system got stronger over time after being continually exposed to infections.
Also, since I started flossing in a consistent basis I no longer get cold sores.
so… I guess the best thing to do is… eat well, clean ur teeth, don’t over medicate urself with advil, flu-shots & whatnot, and let ur immune system get stronger.
Wash your hands with soap and hot water. I read its supposed to take 2 minutes to effectivley wash which seems like for ever.
Also, while I’m not a fan of the anti-baterical, no water needed hand cleansers they are nice in a pinch. Like after shaking a dirty persons hand, or grabbing a sticky pole on the bus or after leaving the gym.
