How Can I Use Straps for Cleans?

You’re definitely NOT supposed to use straps for olympic lifts. not only is it dangerous, it defeats the point of the lifts - to get stronger. Get your hands strong enough to lift the weight. Also, when you catch the weight on a clean, it’s not supposed to be in your hands. The bar will actually be resting on your fingertips and your shoulders. Watch some more videos on this

do 4 sessions of:

hang-pull + hang-snatch/clean, (up to 80%-90% 2x3, or max) then pulls (up to 3x2, or 2x3 with 115%-120%),

Then look at the shape your hands are in.

exactly my point. You need to have strong hands to do these lifts.

that’s not what I meant… if you do that little training cycle you will be ripping calluses like no other, hence the need for straps.

I’m going to quote what John Broz wrote about straps on another forum:

"Using straps in the snatch is a MUST! There is no way your hands can endure the abuse put on them from snatching over and over daily.

In the cleans we NEVER use them.

Ask Zach Krych about that! He is an US lifter who is very talented but had a bonehead coach that let him do P.Cleans with straps. He lost his balance on one attempt, fell back and hit both elbows on the platform breaking both wrists.

Now, about a year later, he is finally able to clean about 50-60% of what he was doing, but still can’t snatch. That could be a career ending amount of time to lose. 2 yrs to get back to where you were and the time lost that should have been spent improving. one stupid mistake is about a 4 yr difference. That is 1 olympics…GONE!"

i don’t do olympic lifts, but i think i may have a solution for you. don’t use straps. like i said, i don’t do olympic lifts, but can visualize how awkward it would be to use straps. how bout get the sand out of your vagina and increase your grip strength and wipe you ass with your straps.

you never heard of any olde tyme strong men going on message boards complaining that didn’t know how to use straps for their 500 pound turkish get-ups. pretend your strong and don’t need straps.
I’ve never had the pleasure of speaking with any old time strongmen but I see some modern day ones train once in a while. One of them is actually pretty good, he had the world record on Apollon press for example. His highest deadlift is 840lbs, he uses straps quite a lot in training.

It’s just a training tool, whether you use them or not is hardly something to be proud about and using them certainly doesn’t make you a pussy. Relyling on them too much might be a bad thing if you’re a competing lifter but using them for certain things is not only ok, it might even be a good idea.

I only find them useful for clean pulls(emphasizes the straight arm cue for the 1st two stages of the clean). However, you should be able to do the lifts without the straps as well.

If you decide to get the straps, I recommend the Ironmind “Short and Sweet” straps or make your own out of nylon webbing or a car safety belt.
