Straps or No Straps

Hi,
I’m currently trying to build my forearm strength and grip, and began doing deadlifts without the straps I normally use.

My poundage has signficantly decreased as a result, due to a chronic injury in my left wrist which prevents heavy lifting without straps.
Best to stick without the straps, despite my inability to lift heavy?
Thanks

I have the same delimma, without straps, my poundages drop significantly. I just use straps for the poundages I cannot lift without.

Probably… if you want to gain some grip stregth. I wouldn’t use those starps unless you have a serious injury and just cannot deadlift without them.

MIx it up. One week due your heavy work with straps to work your back more. The next week no straps lighter weight to work your forearms and for a good cardio blast. High rep deads will make your heart and lungs burn.

Keep going without straps and try different exercises for forearms besides deadlifts… hanging for time off a chin up bar, farmer’s walks, etc.

And btw, rest your wrist til it gets better… best to atrophy for a minute before you really mess up your wrist :stuck_out_tongue:

I would never sacrifice my deadlifting weight for the sake of my grip. I don’t know why people think that deadlifting without straps is the only way to build grip strength. There are many other methods of grip-building that don’t require screwing up your deadlift.

I neglected my grip strength for a long time and now I’m playing the catch up game, but I am catching up. I just employ other grip exercises. I’d hate to imagine how low my deadlifting weight would be right now if I stayed at low weights until my grip caught up.

I’ve had people give me a hard time about using straps to deadlift. They say I’m cheating or they bitch about how I’m neglecting my grip. The irony is that I’m pulling waaaaay more than them.

I completely agree with you brother!

Everyone I know, everyone, who deadlifts over 500 lbs uses straps. I wont deadlift without mine. There is no reason to. Pull ups, cleans, rows, shrugs, many other exercises train the grip strength. I would continue to pull as heavy as possible and work the grip other ways.

I say only use the straps when you really need them and do extra work to bring up your grip strength. Deadlifts can definatly help bring up your grip but I don’t think it should be your primary goal with them.

Fo’ shizzle, my nizzle.

What about for squat rack curls?Because thats what this 20 something guy was doing at my gym this weekend. As well as with ever other curl variation he did. lol.

It was silly, actually used them to speed curl 10lbs.

I ususally do my warm ups without straps and then when I get over 300 I will put them on.

I basically go to failure without straps, then use straps to finish my series…
