Home Gym Ideas

Some time in the near future I’ll be moving into a house with a garage and I’d like to get my own garage gym going.

I’m almost 100% certain that I’m going to get an EFS 2x2 combo rack. This is unless someone knows of a better/cheaper rack.
I’ll definitely get a texas power bar and a ton of weight.
I already have a prowler and blast straps for assistance exercises.

Things I’ll add later on:
GHR
Box squat
Chains/bands
dip handles
olympic dumbbell handles

My question is does anyone know where to get cheap plates. EFS sells the troy interlocking plates in a set along with a texas power bar and I’ve found what I consider to be a good deal on additional interlocking plates.

I’ve never used plates like these and wasn’t sure if they’re any good or not. Because of the interlocking is there any problem deadlifting with them? I can’t seem to find regular olympic plates that cheap and will probably go with those if they don’t propose a problem.

IMO your best bet on plates is the find ones for sale close to you or ones that have free shipping. Generally, the difference in brands isn’t enough to merrit the extra shipping cost when you have to order them. While I’ve never used them, I’m sure the ones you have displayed are fine.

Just look for used plates on craigslist. You should find them for $0.50/lb or less. Having been through this, I’d get the 3x3 rack because the weight tree is built into it.

The 3x3 might be cost prohibitive but you can get the 2x2 with weight racks. I think it’s going to be a space issue more than anything. I might be able to get a rack on top of a 8x8 homemade platform and still have room for both cars in the garage.

Just one more thing. Do you know if the cross pieces at the bottom of the rack are low enough to preform deadlifts inside the rack?

Oh yeah, they are designed for it. The nice thing is they aren’t on the ground, so you can have a wide stance for squatting and deadlifting.

I just built a home gym. I went with a 3x3 from Williams strength (www.fatbars.com). I’ve heard the supply EFS, It’s certainly a great quality product, I couldn’t be happier with it. My bay is a Jesup 7" which is a little thicker, but well made and at $165 delivered, freed up some cash for those oly dumbell handles. Box squat box was about $150 from ny barbells (SQUAT BOX). I picked up all my weight from a local used sporting goods store, as well as a second crappy bar that I made a SSB bar with for another $50 of hardware. Reverse hyper cost me about $75 of lumber and pipe, and I was able to find some decently thick chain at the same store. Shaky though it sounds, I’ve never had a problem with any of my equipment. I did a lot of research if you have any questions, please ask.

That’s where I got my plates. They are all Troy plates and can really take a beating. A combination of there and a gym that closed down near my house and I got about 2000lbs in plates for under 1200 dollars. I also just bought the 45 degree hyper/CSR combo they sell. It saved me about 2 grand and it works perfectly.

They’ve got some good looking power racks too. I know people consider EFS the industry standard but TSS seems to offer a good rack at a good price. It would be a lot easier on my wallet than an EFS.

Anyone have any experience with TSS power racks?

that looks like a screaming deal on the GHR/Hyper. do the pads switch out, is that what I see going on?
