I have a home gym, if I want to do a workout that calls for a lot of sled work, is there an alternative I can do at home if I don’t own a sled?
Is there a reason you cannot have a sled WITH your home gym?
This morning, I took my prowler out at 0350 and got in 40 minutes of sled work. Loaded it up in the back of the truck the night before
it’s complicated and expensive, but I tied a rope to an old tire. Then I stack more tires or plates on it to make it heavier.
A sled is something probably everyone should use and literally all you need is a rope and something that can be dragged.
Just gonna leave this here
@Mods, before you remove - this product was posted on the #stuff-we-like thread I believe
I do cardio with a weighted backpack.
Seriously, just buy a sled. There are several inexpensive ones. I mean, if you want to do a workout with A LOT of sled (to quote you), might as well get one.
It’s kinda like saying: “I want to do a workout with a lot of barbell exercises, do you have an alternative for a barbell?”
You can get a simple sled for like 70 bucks, or spring for a legit-er one between 150-250 bucks.
My new gym has the “tank”, a resistance “vehicle” which is like 2,000 dollars, and is nearly impossible to make a change in direction so if the wheels aren’t perfectly aligned you have to stop and drag it back on course, and is a totally useless piece of equipment, so I just use the prowler.
It’s on my list for sure, my next purchase is a squat rack. Just wondering if folks have alternatives in the meantime, for example I read you can put weights on a towel on a smooth floor? Not sure how effective that is.
What equipment do you have and what program are you trying to run?
Logistics plans tend to start with constraints and resources.
It’s not the question you asked, but your best solution might be to take an assessment of what’s available to you and pick a plan from there.
Anyway, to your question, you can do the towel on the floor thing (depending on the floor). It never worked well for me. You have to get insanely low, the weights like to tip, you’re pushing as much into the floor as across, and you’re never able to vary your position, etc. It costs you nothing to try it though!
That doesn’t sound too fun. I get what folks are saying, might just stick with programs without sled work until I can purchase one. I don’t have a ton of room in my garage for a sled, would be turning around a lot in the winter. ![]()
Don’t let @T3hPwnisher hear you say that…
I’m not picking on you; he has video of himself training in pretty inclement conditions
This is probably the best choice.
Don’t plan to drive across country without a car, ya know?
Perhaps I’m missing the obvious, but don’t they make sleds SPECIFICALLY for the winter?

There are, of course, higher quality ones too, but still. Like: just drag one of those when winter hit.
This guy has a Jump Stretch Band looped through his lifting belt and he’s marching in place. You could do that for awhile.
To make it more interesting you could do ill stuff like hold DBs farmer’s walk style or goblet style while you’re walking.
Or shuffle sideways to hit more hips/glutes like a sideways sled drag.
I like Derek Poundstone’s idea as well of taking a treadmill that’s turned off, holding onto the uprights, and just powering through. Don’t know if you heard him discuss it on the Legends of Iron Podcast, but it redlined him something fierce.
I’m sure it is a good exercise, but it might not be good for the treadmill.
I care more about making me strong than making my treadmill strong ![]()
In the same vein, do you have an update about the document you mentionned in this topic?
Please go watch Rocky 4. Training in the snow >>>> steroids
What benefits are you trying to get from the sled? better cardio, light restorative work, extra volume for a specific area, something else?
What is the “issue?” You don’t have the right equipment, you don’t want to go outside, or you don’t have a good area for long drags?
What equipment do you have?
I feel like the answer could be Squat Thrusts, or a circuit of lunges, kettlebell swings and cuban presses, or just dragging a regular 45 pound plate across the backyard. Or a barbell complex followed by jump roping. Or…
I just don’t know the question!
