I’m going to be moving to Baltimore soon and I am looking for recommendations for gyms.
The one that might be closest to me is the Gold’s Gym (in the Inner Harbor, right next to the Barnes & Noble).
Any thoughts on this gym? I’m a little wary of corporate gyms as I have heard tons of my friends getting burned at Bally’s, but from what I’ve heard Gold’s seems pretty nice.
Fells Point is nice! It right by the water and there are lots of bars/restaurants/shops there.
You wouldn’t be too far from the Gold’s in Inner Harbour (you’d be close to that, too!)
I’m gonna check and see what else is around that area.
That most hardcore gym would be the World’s that Kevin Lavrone owns, not exactly sure how far that would be. How far would you be willing to drive to get to a gym?
I think at most I would be willing to drive 15 miles (and preferably less).
The main thing I want out of the gym is to be able to lift the way I want to. I remember several times when I went to Bally’s (or something like that) where I was supersetting and the staff there reprimanded me for taking to many weights! And don’t even get me started on Push Presses, Deads, Cleans… sigh…
Regarding Gold’s, from what I’ve heard and read on this forum it seems ok. I’ll definitely check it out.
If you have World’s address I would greatly appreciate it.
The Golds’ in question seemed to be mostly machines, with one small area for free weights. They may have only 1 squat rack… can’t remember forsure. On the other hand, this tells you what kind of clientelle they have, so the rack won’t likely be busy.
I’ve never been to any of these gyms. I do work out at another Merritt on the Westside of Baltimore. It’s a “fitness center.” I heard the one near Fells is huge with lots of equipment. Brick Bodies is a 24 hour gym. Gold’s may be a bit expensive, not sure what the membership is. I also heard abot a dungeon type gym in Little Italy (which is also close to Fell’s) that is really hardcore, almost like a basement. No cardio stuff at all. It’s called Baltimore Bodybuilders. I couldn’t find any info on it.
This is a PM I received from a member who couldn;t post it for some reason.
RE: my Golds’ Gym post
yes, the freeweight section is pretty small, but they do have two “squat racks.” they’re the funny ones that aren’t power racks…fixed spotter bars. when i was there they didn’t yell at me for doing cleans (which there was a bit of room for). no one else doing squats, but one guy using the squat rack for curls, i think lol. the biggest complaint i had was no good chinup stations! two stations, but no straight bars, which annoys the heck outta me.
i got a workout done while i was there, so it wasn’t bad, but it was $15 for one day.
I’m not from B-more but I was out there for a week back in September.
I worked out at Quest Fitness in Abingdon wich was pretty close to where I was staying in Edgewood. The gym had a good free weight section, (some older equipment but most of it was good to go) lots of cardio choices, decent locker room, and an affordable weeklong plan that only cost me like $28 if I remember correctly. (military discount included)
The staff was friendly, the owner even gave me a ride home the one night I didn’t have a rental car.
