Gym in Northern Virginia Recommendation

Hi guys,

I wanted to know if you know any good gyms in Northern Virginia. I live in Fair Oaks/Fair Lakes area, adn I want some place closer (my current gym’s a bit too far). So far I found Lifetime Fitness and Gold’s Gym in Fairfax/Chantilly. Gold’s Gym have somewaht limited hours, but Lifetime Fitness is open 24/7. I think there’s gotta be more gyms around tho. Any one from the area who can recommend me a gym to check out? Thanks.

TJ

TJ I live in Vienna right next to where you live. This place is yuppie fucking hell. No there is not. Their especially is no grunting, snorting, loud ass metal music musclehead gym here. That is why I built one in my house. Got a power rack lots of weightm, treadmill for days I cannot get outside. jump rope, axe, sandbags, keg, and other odd implements. Home gym where the only asshole is you.

Hey, it’s so cool to meet a t-man in Virginia. I thought this place was a yuppie town. I complained this to Patricia in another thread, but basically this town sucks. You know so many trainers I meet tell me “you’re a girl, you shouldn’t squat or deadlift. Why don’t you do more leg extension w/ 20 lb weight? You don’t wanna get bulky, do you?” Grr…I recently interviewed a trainer cuz I wanted to buy 2 sessions or so to get him to show me how to deadlift properly, and he said I should really stick to leg curls if I want to develop my hamstring…as you can imagine, I didn’t end up hiring him.

Check out the World Gym in Sterling if you are willing to drive a little further. I am planning on joining in the next month or so since I live in Herndon. Keith, who posts here often, is a personal trainer there. Hit him up.

You don’t mean World Gate do you? If you mean World gate in Herndon, that is absolutely laughable. That place it a yuppie-watering hole at best. Any place that has eucalyptus scented steam in the steam room is not my idea of T-man heaven. Maybe you have a different idea of a T-Man gym and to each his own but have you ever been there? I used to workout there. The trainers are some of the worst I have ever seen. Talk about miss-informed, boobs. Ok maybe one or two may be exceptions but the ones that talked to me made me want to strangle them with their flexibands.

C’mon, Dude! No self respecting T-Man would workout at Worldgate!! I am talking about World Gym, the only “World Gym” in Virginia, which is in Sterling, just off of 28,a few miles north of 267. (New to area, don’t rememeber the cross street, maybe Church Rd.?) Don’t know how much Keith knows, but he looked like he lifted and he reads this forum, so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Hey guys, I don’t usually post here but read the forum semi-regularly. I’m going to be moving to the Reston-Herndon area sometime in late summer because my fiance wants to move back to where she’s from. I’m sorry to hear about the gym situation there. From what I’ve seen of nova the area is definitely yuppie hell. I’ll probably end up building my own gym if the situation is as bad as it sounds, but if you guys could point me in the direction of some sort of underground gym that is geared towards the hardcore trainers it would be appreciated. I’ve been assuming there must be one somewhere around there, since there are so many people in the area…

Hi JP,

Welcome to Virginia! Virginia, esp. Northern part, is very yuppie. Do check out Gold’s Gym Herndon/Reston though since it has very good weight sections with EVERYTHING you could possibly want – 4 squat racks, 2 leg press machines, etc., etc. My only problem is that this place is a bit too far for me. I don’t want to spend 40-50 minutes driving back and forth from my place to the gym for a 60 min workout. If it was closer, I’d definitely stay there. Also the gym’s squeaky clean, which is a big plus. The staff there wipes all machines religiously every day at least two-three times a day.

However, do NOT hire trainers there…they suck big time.

Hi HercUnchained,

I know the gym you’re talking about. It’s close to Dulles Airport, somewhere near 50 and 28. I’m not sure what their hours are like. I refuse to join gyms that aren’t open at least till 11 pm. It’s not that far from my place – maybe about 10-15 mins. I really really need a good gym. I live close to Rt 50, I-66, and 7100 (FX County Pkwy), and it’s a pain to find a decent gym. The only gym that’s close is just plain nasty – dirty and over-priced.

Try Olympus Gym at Seven Corners in Falls Church. This facility is the largest and most serious minded I’ve encountered around here in the last ten years.

Olympus gym at seven corners, no question about it.

Isn’t Olympus a boxing gym?

I will be in Charleston, Virgina next week for a family wedding and I want to find a good place to train at least 2 of the days. I’ll be staying right next to (literally) the University of Virginia. Has anyone worked out at their facilities? If so, is it a good weight room? How much would a workout cost? Like $5/day? Is their a better place to lift at? Thanks for the help fellows.

Hey do you run around the W&O trail in Vienna near Revolution Gym? If so I think I actually have met you if not oops must have been some other girl. Peace, B

Machina – sorry nobody responded. I actually graduated from UVA last year. FYI (or anyone else who’s going to be in the area), Charlottesville is a crummy little town. Has a Gold’s, but I never went there. UVA gyms are pretty decent. The only gym I really really like is the Aquatic Fitness Center (fondly known as AFC), right across from the new dorms (Alderman Road). AFC is the only gym at UVA that has a pool, hot tub, smith machine, squat rack, and deadlift areas. Don’t bother going to the 2nd floor. Stay on the first, since the 2nd floor is all girly place (too many cardio machines and other crap).

Knuckle -- I don't think it was me. I don't run outside anymore due to my knee problems. The pounding is a killer, and it's a little bit better when I run on a treadmill. Do you live near Vienna?

Hey, my girl lives in Herndon! You know Jessica V. or Lauren Wilson? They both go to William and Mary…just wondering…would be cool if you did.

TJ~My name is Keith and I live in Ashburn,VA. The gym I work (trainer) at is World Gym in Sterling. It may be a bit too far for you but it is right off rt.28 just north of the Dulles airport. I don’t get paid for selling memberships so my “unofficial review” is not biased, I assure you.
They are open until 11pm on weekdays and open @4:30 am. Pretty good hours on the weekend too. The membership rates run from 20-30 per month and the place is pretty clean overall. I wouldn’t say that the gym was hardcore but it is a bit more serious than your local golds or lifetime fitness clubs. No pools, juice bar or any of that shit.
Equipment:
Hammer Strength/Life Fitness/Icarian with db’s up to 130lbs. 3 squat racks and a deadlifting platform. Cardio area is separate and it only gets busy from 5-7 pm on weeknights.
Word of caution: Most of the trainers there are novice at best. So beware…
If you want to try/tour the place just tell them you are a referral from me and they’ll hook you up. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

A small small world, Joel…I thought no real T-people lived near Virginia since it’s such a preppy place. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), I didn’t go to W&M although I could’ve gone there. Herndon/Reston, Vienna, and Fairfax areas seem a bit inbreeding-ish…more and more preppies everyday.

I’m actually from hardcore Jersey  But my girl lives in Herndon, and since she’s hot; I don’t mind the fact that she’s spoiled

TJ,
Did you mean Charlottesville is a crummy lifting town? I would agree that c-ville is not a good lifting town unless you had an opportunity to lift at the McCue Center. Otherwise, I think c-ville is hands down the best place to live in the country!
