I can vouch for the fact that front squats make me cough as well and give me the Lord Vader effect. Lately it seems like I always have a cold and on days where I am pushing for a front squat rep PR I get that tickle in my throat and it becomes distracting as all get out. Probably 95% of the time I use a clean grip for front squat but every now and then I will use straps as Thibs has explained on his front squat video.
I do not get the urge to cough with the straps but I am A LOT more comfortable using the clean grip than straps. And yes even if I don’t have a cold front squats will make me want to cough at the worst possible time. Sometimes I will set the bar too far back towards my throat and catch a nice jab in the Adams Apple and lose my breath for a moment. It takes time but you will find the sweet spot. Been a lurker on your log for a while and find it very entertaining. Your workouts are nuts but honestly I usually skip down to the end and read your write up and random thoughts. Keep Killing It!

If the grip is still giving you grief on Deadlifts, you could ask your gym management if they could buy a 25mm bar (that’s the women’s weightlifting diameter). It really does make a huge difference.
