This isn’t a bright idea…are you really going to sacrifice a better education just so you don’t have to put up with some b.s. rules for 4 years of your life? I can understand if two colleges are dead even all else considered, and you go with the one with better gym rules, but get real man…don’t blow your education just because you might not like the rules…like some other people mentioned, you can get a membership at a gym for $20 a month…not a lot in the grand scheme of things…put it on a credit card
well of course i know that, right now i’m split between two schools, but i’ve yet to visit them. but the gym rules, like i said, might be more likely to play a part in my choice. And since i also compete in strongman, the availability to use strongman implements will have a little affect too.

Sorry for assuming you might be an idiot, but I gotta play those types of things on the safe side…I actually had a friend who’s sister got accepted to Virginia Tech and George Mason but chose Mason because “they have better malls around Fairfax than Blacksburg”…I bet she’s regretting that decision now that she’s graduated and doesn’t have any money to spend at those malls (no offense coolnatedawg)

Where are these gyms that allow chalk, deadlifts, and oympic lifts that are only $20 a month. I’ve never seen one, it would be like finding a leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow to me.
the big picture of my post completely missed you…
I get the point, I was just saying.

shit, im planning on applying to a lot of UC schools, this doesnt bode well… grad school the last two years at University of Chicago and i never had a problem with any of this- heavy deads, cleans, etc., and they even supplied the chalk. arnt there any athletes at your school whose coaches should be inclined to include oly platforms and chalk, crazyness.

At Clemson, the weight club trains in the Dungeon. The main gym isn’t bad, but being able to be a little rougher around the edges in nice, as is the drastically smaller number of people.

I work out at the local In-Shape and they’re fine with all that, or at least no one’s said anything to me since I’ve been there.

Holy shit I hate you.

;_;

Caution: RANT AHEAD!

In the exact same situation as the OP. The gym started the chalk rule because of me. I was not making a mess, but apparently they still did not like the idea of a potential mess.

The part that pissed me off the most is that the fat bitch that works there walked up to me and said, “Give me your chalk”. To which i promptly replied … “No.”. Managers got involved and i got ‘written up’. I voiced my concern that it is actually more dangerous not to use chalk because of the possibility of tearing your hand open, or the bar slipping.

Apparently all they cared about is having to work even less (or the potential to do so) than they currently do.

I was also told that my current gym is, and i quote : “not a training gym”. Still don’t know what the fuck that means.

Had half a nerve to tell her that i don’t bother her while she is eating, and she shouldn’t bother me while i am lifting. Since it’s obvious that’s what she does in HER free time.

Become albino, then they can’t tell if your using chalk or not.

^This

But seriously, I go to a smaller university (Arcadia), and our gym is just small. The school only has 3400 students, and honestly, I see the same crew of people at the gym all the time. Its like there are 50 or 60 kids who actually work out. But on topic, no one seems to care what we do in the gym, as long as we respect the equipment. I deadlift in there as do numerous others.

That sounds about right. Every single member of our professional staff graduated from UK, and most are terrible at their jobs, i.e. losing thousands of dollars because they forgot to charge faculty for their memberships. This in turn leads to the hiring of even bigger idiots (I believe they are called “student staff”), most of whom don’t exercise and have never had a job. These are the kind of assholes that do everything in their power to enforce inane rules like the chalk rule, because god forbid they might have to vacuum something at the end of the day.

If you are born in this world, welcome to the freak show, if you are born in America, you are seated in the front row. Congratulations!

i find that the douches are the ones that get to stay and the actual serious lifters that take care of the equipment are usually the ones that get kicked out.

in the cases i’ve seen, gyms don’t like the bodybuilder or powerlfiter “look”. i actually stopped into a planet fitness just for shits and giggles and the 150lb douche behind the desk actually told me that i wasn’t welcome in the gym because they don’t like “those heavy lifters” in their gym. they were a “judgement free zone” he tells me. i ask what the fuck does that mean?? he says it means they don’t tolerate the hardcore attitude. so i say- “your gym is full of a bunch of pussies then??” he asked me to leave at that point.

this is what going to the gym has come to. they are actually making a conserted effort to keep people from getting stronger. that’s like having a library without any books because we don’t want our customers to learn to read. effffing crazy. all of those people at planet fitness would be better off saving their money and just sit at home watching dancing with the stars reruns.

MM,
Where in the hell did this happen? What do you (and Steve?) plan to do now with the Gold’s closing? Most of the options in Manassas area are not very promising.

BTW, how the hell have you been?
There’s a planet fatness off of balls ford road in manasshole.

the owner of our gym is opening a new one off of Liberia near PWP. It’s in a new area. I’m a bit worried that it’s going to be yuppyville and we won’t end up being able to stay because of all the heavy lifting and stuff. i really hope i’m wrong though. there’s actually three of us- me, Dave and jowee. we are all getting ready for a SPF meet october 23rd in Roanoke.

how have you been?? haven’t seen hid nor hair of you in awhile. still competing? haven’t heard from Brent either.
I’m from Manasshole! My mom is a manager at the Freedom Center. I haven’t been there in 6 years though b/c I moved to Lynchburg. My Y is pretty lame, but they don’t give me any trouble anymore.

No worries, UVA has a much better gym than VT, so he won’t have to sacrifice his education.

JK, I have no idea what either has now. But I loved my dungeon gym at University Hall.

I’m really sorry to bother you guys but I’ve hit a brick wall at the gym that I’m at. Currently they are in the process of banning me due to the fact that I’ve used chalk (liquid chalk) and had a colored beverage in the weight room (water and BCAAs)

I’m currently a graduate student at the University of California Riverside and the rules in the gym have been changing to create a more female friendly atmosphere. Because of this, all the heavy lifts are being discouraged and retarded rules are being put in place (no chalk)

Now I’m not looking for the advice (grab your balls and head somewhere else) because we (the students) do not have the option to pay for the school gym or not so I can’t get my money back.

What I am looking for is any advice on different types of chalk (clear?) or any type of advice that would be beneficial. I know this is very open ended but quite honestly I’m a little pissed off right now. Any advice would be great
“female friendly” This term makes my god damned blood boil. wtf is that supposed to mean? When women start running the world we can abide by these standards-maybe. Maybe its just me, but if certain ‘women’ are too damn afraid to come into the gym because there are big sweaty guys lifting weights and grunting, then why dont they all just stay out of the gym and just do their DVD ab workouts on the floors of their dorm rooms. A gym is meant to be a place where men AND women can train hard. No matter what it is they are training for. This goes to show you how much of a pussification America is under going.

Besides, I personally do not know of any girls that would be bothered too much by guys all sweaty lifting weights. In fact most girls i have spoken to say they find it anywhere from tolerable to sexy. I say pull a big ass deadlift USING CHALK, grunt as you lock it out and then drop the fucking weight…then just yell some profanity to prove a point :stuck_out_tongue:

The term pisses me off as well. I’m not sure who these people are that are bothered by sweat and loud noise. The term ‘female friendly’ pre-supposes that women don’t train hard, sweat a lot and want to kill it too. Me, I train in my garage where we have chalk and baby powder as much as we please.

At Ithaca we have some heavy training guys, around 5 guys totaling 1400-1500 raw, one of the guys from diesel crew, a world record holder in the IPF 165’s. Aside from the occasional new staff person telling us once to wear shoes when we deadlift or not to use chalk the staff has a pretty good live and let live policy as long as we don’t throw chalk into the air or leave a bar loaded.

Honestly I’ve used baby powder and even snorted ammonia once or twice and no one bothered me. I don’t think most gym staff really want to mess up your workout unless you’re making a mess or being loud as fuck (at least that’s been my experience).

I think seeing people stronger than you should be inspiring rather than intimidating and if you choose to take it as intimidating that’s your own lack of confidence or desire to improve. Personally seeing a guy in the gym out-bench out-squat or out deadlift me makes me want to improve and is especially helpful on those days I feel unmotivated.

I’m being slowly kicked out of my gym at the moment. My lifting “doesn’t fit with their philosophy”
