I am not saying that you are, but not being a douche goes a long way in not getting kicked out of a gym.
i find that the douches are the ones that get to stay and the actual serious lifters that take care of the equipment are usually the ones that get kicked out.

in the cases i’ve seen, gyms don’t like the bodybuilder or powerlfiter “look”. i actually stopped into a planet fitness just for shits and giggles and the 150lb douche behind the desk actually told me that i wasn’t welcome in the gym because they don’t like “those heavy lifters” in their gym. they were a “judgement free zone” he tells me. i ask what the fuck does that mean?? he says it means they don’t tolerate the hardcore attitude. so i say- “your gym is full of a bunch of pussies then??” he asked me to leave at that point.

this is what going to the gym has come to. they are actually making a conserted effort to keep people from getting stronger. that’s like having a library without any books because we don’t want our customers to learn to read. effffing crazy. all of those people at planet fitness would be better off saving their money and just sit at home watching dancing with the stars reruns.

So the “judgement free zone” judged you and kicked you out…wow, not so judge free huh?

isn’t planet fitness where they have the noise level alarms?

Times like these I wished I win the powerball and build a real gym that kicks out wimps that don’t want to better themselves it would be a board of the peers. If the group thinks your a douche…your gone…ahh day dreaming…
yep…they have the “lunk alarm”

here are a couple of my favorite videos taken at this world class lifting establishment

the owner of our gym is opening a new one off of Liberia near PWP. It’s in a new area. I’m a bit worried that it’s going to be yuppyville and we won’t end up being able to stay because of all the heavy lifting and stuff. i really hope i’m wrong though. there’s actually three of us- me, Dave and jowee. we are all getting ready for a SPF meet october 23rd in Roanoke.

how have you been?? haven’t seen hid nor hair of you in awhile. still competing? haven’t heard from Brent either.

I guess you’ll find out, but my guess is that he won’t let you just because it is a new establishment and he will be trying to rake in as many of the ‘pay monthly gym rate-don’t actually go to the gym’ members as possible. Since they tend to get skarred of grunts and heavy weights, well you know the rest. You could always try Lifetime Fitness in Centreville. They might have forgotten about you and let you join. Of course, the first time you deadlift, you’ll probably face the same fate as before ;-).

As for me, I’m doing well. My most recent meet was in November 2009 and I went 500/370/545 RAAAAAWWWWW in 220 (BW 213). Unfortunately, I ended up getting burned out and just sort of drifted in and out of lifting for a while. I even tried olympic lifting for a few months and although it was fun and I wasn’t too shabby picking up on the form, speed, etc., OL just wasn’t as fulfilling. My wife just gave birth to our first child (a boy) two weeks ago and that caused a prolonged deload, but I am getting back into the garage more consistently. I have a log here and will post semi-regularly (tough to get everything done with a newborn) if you’re interested in seeing what I am up to.

i lasted all of 30 minutes at lifetime before they kicked me out of there. i guess we shall see. it shouldn’t be this hard. i have hard time believing that the world has totally been overrun with pussies. but then again that would explain the huge popularity of all these damn dance shows like dancing with the stars. i would rather get kicked in the nuts than to have to sit through that sewage and many a member of the male gender love that shit.

anyway… congratulations on the newborn. my daughter turns 4 in october. cherish these years, they go by really fast. i thank God everyday for every damn moment i have with my daughter. i’ve probably played Barbies more often than most little girls do in their entire life:)

i’ll drop in your log to check things out. have you heard from Brent at all? also, good to see you became a more respectable lifter going RAAAWWW and all:)

I went to UCR for undergrad. UCR stands for either “Under Construction Regularly”, “Unbelievably Cruel Rules”, “Under Constant Regulation”, and a whole host of others, take your pick. They started pulling this crap my junior and senior years, trying to prevent me from doing Power Cleans and Deadlifts, and, heaven forbid, make any noise when lifting heave weights. “Umm sir could you please keep the grunting down and rack your weights quietly”.

Its a little late for you to make friends with the gym staff and ask them to turn a blind eye to the chalk if you offer to clean the bars after use. And good luck fighting with any authority figure at the gym or UCR in general, Its run like our current government, they’re blindly ignorant to the needs and wants of the majority and can’t give legitimate answers when questioned about the policies.

It is really sad to hear this happening, UCR’s gym actually used to be fairly big guy friendly. Being that there is nothing on or within 25mi of campus that resembles any kind of fun, most parties have the cops called on them by the neighbors before the kegs arrive, and its too damn hot to workout outside, working out at the gym was really the only thing to do.

You might want to see if they will grant you access to the UCR athletics weightroom. Its a little weightroom that all the UCR teams can use in the old gym building with the pool. Hours might be crazy though because they block off times for each team. Other than that, I say waive your gym fee from your tuition and best of luck finding a non-commercial gym anywhere near campus.

If anyone has ever seen the movie “PCU”, you can get an idea of the direction UCR as a whole is headed in. Very Very sad

Is that legal, for PF to deny somebody membership because of how they look? Honest question to anybody that knows.

My pipe dream is to open up/run/manage a gym, I’d love to get in on it with some buddies equally into lifting/competing, I think it would attract great business if put in the right area.

They recently closed my gym which was decent to open a “better” one at a new location. Better was just more locker room space, pool, basketball and less equipment. I dropped that membership for 2 other ones which combined actually come out to slightly less money per month.

Neither of them have the kind of staff that go around and tell people what they can/cant do. The more commercial one surprisingly has very little staff, usually just some overweight chick at the front desk which is not even visible to the weight area.

Trainers make the bad ones at my old gym not seem so bad anymore which I didn’t think was possible, I doubt they will ever say a word to me.

Here’s my advice: either get to know the GA(s) who run the day to day affairs, or get a job at your gym. At Kentucky I know all the GAs and they all know I use chalk, but they let me do it because I’m not an ass about it. I also know all of the professional staff because I worked at the gym for two years, and they tend to look the other way.

One of them actually drilled an extra hole in my belt, so they can be really helpful. It all depends on how your situation is, obviously, because there are always rules nazis, but my guess would be that if you preemptively have this discussion, most people would let you get away with breaking minor rules like that.

Either way, I’m shocked they would ever say anything to you in the first place. You would easily be one of the biggest people in my gym and would probably intimidate all of the student staff.

I deadlifted at Lifetime during the year or so I maintained a membership and only caught shit once, but interestingly enough it was a case of misplaced blame because I was not ‘slamming’ down the weight (maybe 475, can’t remember). Instead, it was some douchebag from 5 minutes earlier who was doing his best imitation of a scared cat or a dog taking a dump with all of 155 pounds and practically dropping it from lockout. I am so glad I don’t have to deal with any of this idiocy since I still have my trusty garage gym setup.

I e-chatted with Brent about a month ago in his log on this site (still goes by Modi). He’s had some nagging injuries IIRC, but he’s still at it.

October is a good month to be born in, as I can attest. Everything is going well so far with our little guy, although the whole sleep thing has been a problem. Oh well, there’s time to sleep when I’m dead.

Yeah that is bullshit. I think the hatred for planet fitness is well documented on this site. They assume that since you are a big guy that you are a dick.

I only meant not being an asshole big guy stereotype should be everyones goal, which obviously you and your crew are not.

Yeah I hate planet fitness too, I work at a gym and always steer people away from there for the lunk alarm reason, regardless of fitness level.
Back to the chalk issue. If all else fails you could make due w/ your other lifts. Concentrate on really bringing up those less chalk necessary lifts, ala squats/bench. Maybe Squat 2x a week, one of the day you would normally deadlift. You could do rows and rdls to supplement the deadlift.
Another idea w/ the liquid chalk is to put it on in the bathroom. Like after you do your warmup deadlift sets, go back to the locker room and squirt that stuff on your hands and then come back and do your sets. Might take a bit longer but who cares, no one is going to inspect your hands, its not like you will have powder in them anyways.

I’m a senior in highschool, as well as a heavy lifter, and hearing all this bullshit about university gyms is more likely to have a play in my choice of college…

This isn’t a bright idea…are you really going to sacrifice a better education just so you don’t have to put up with some b.s. rules for 4 years of your life? I can understand if two colleges are dead even all else considered, and you go with the one with better gym rules, but get real man…don’t blow your education just because you might not like the rules…like some other people mentioned, you can get a membership at a gym for $20 a month…not a lot in the grand scheme of things…put it on a credit card

Here ya go Meat…a cough silencer! all you gotta do is grunt into this and no lunk alarm! lol

PLANET FAGNESS…epic losers. On the other hand maybe all the squat rack curlers and bosu ball humpers will go there and free up some space at the real gyms.

I’ve said this before in all of the Planet Fitness hate threads. If you don’t like their rules, why bother even going? There are a number of Health Fitness chains from Planet Fitness to Curves for women etc. The type of gym you choose is according to the type of rules you wanna tolerate/what that gym offers. I’ve got no beef with Planet Fitness…let them run their establishment the way they want to, its got nothing to do with me. And whoever owns them makes a killing, so the real joke is on someone else isn’t it?

And on the orginal topic, I went to the 5th largest University in the nation, graduated when I was 21. They had an AWESOME workout facility, and a rock climbing wall, simply awesome, but you know what? I paid 30ish dollars a month to lift somewhere closer to home and waaaaay smaller. Why? Cause I got a better workout in my friend’s gym. And it helps that we were friends to begin with, and he pretty much was cool with whatever we came up with. Recently, he had to go easy on people dropping dumbbells, but thats only because people were being pricks and bending the shit out of them. He tells me dumbbells get pretty damn expensive once you go over 90lbs.

I don’t drop dumbbells in his club, as a matter of fact, I’ve never felt the need to throw dumbbells after lifting. I find it more of a mini workout to control them on the way down. And yes I’ve used over 100lb dumbbells. Long story short, just find a place that fits YOUR needs and stop crying. The only reason I almost never worked out at my colliegate gym was cause it was waaaaay too crowded most of the time. One large gym yes, but one for over 50,000 kids.

As far as the OP is concerned, If I were you I’d lift there without chalk. There are ways to lift without using chalk, although it might suck since you’re used to it. If it bothers you that much, you maybe should find a cheap place off campus?

IDK if most athletic programs would let a regular student into their facility for insurance reasons. The athletes are covered to workout in those areas…could be much more into that than people are taking into account. But if you find a coach who is cool with it, then I guess lucky you. You can also try to get onto the athletic training squad who work with the athletes, then you could work out in there no problem.

I’d argue your case to the higher ups, but if it doesn’t work, there are other options. University was expensive for me, but I also had a job and had no problem affording 30ish bucks a month. But then again, I overachieved and didn’t spend money on booze or anything like it.

Where are these gyms that allow chalk, deadlifts, and oympic lifts that are only $20 a month. I’ve never seen one, it would be like finding a leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow to me.

my gym is $25 a month, iron weights, they dont care if i deadlift, i do not perform the olympic lifts but i imagine if i pulled some mats aside and did it, they would be ok as long as i did it with good form. they are iffy on chalk, but have absolutely no problem with liquid chalk

i’m at a university as well. I always find it ironic that they’ll give me shit for putting the bar down to “loud” after a set of bent over rows, yet I never see them say a word to the guys doing weighted db squats on bosu balls surrounded by all the girls doing their ab exercises…and that’s an actual risk!

Sometimes it depends on who’s working too. One day some girl will give me shit for setting the bar down too loud…and then the next day I’ll fail on a clean attempt and literally ditch the weight from shoulder height…and they say nothing, cuz the workers really don’t give a shit. A BIG part of the game, is learning the staff members…finding out who wants to avoid all conflict and go when they’re working.

You guys don’t have a run down YMCA? It’s where I lift and it is consistently empty. I try to avoid banging weights around but they could give a shit less about what goes on upstairs.
