I’m posting this because I need help to reach my goals, also I was hoping you guys could post some tips.
A little about me.
I graduated high school and I will be attending the University of Eastern Michigan to play football as a middle linebacker. My current weight 225-227. Estimatating my maxes are… Bench - 380 / Squat 505/ Powerclean 275-285. One of my goals is to bench 400+ before I report to my new school =D. My speed is pretty damn good (not trying to brag), but I run a 4.5 range consistantly. My fastest time was a 4.53. Pretty good for as much as I weigh and my position. My other goal is to run a 4.4 range. The head coach informed me that I have a pretty good chance of starting as a true freshman so I wanna be ready to step up to the Division 1 collegiate level. It is June 5,2005 … → do you think its possible to get that stronger within reporting date of starting august. Also, I wanna weigh in at 235…
Supplements I am taking so far is Weightgainner 2250… Ive been taking that hardcore and Animal Pak, Animal Stack 2, which I am stacking togeather. I have cell-tech 7lb bottle, but currently not using it as I should be. I have increased my eating habits so I can intake more food ( protein n such…) my diet is descent I look out what I eat, but currently at my age my metolablism is pretty good.
If anyone can kind of understand what I wrote lol please inform me with any tips or lifts or anything that can help me reach my goals. Also, if you have questions about football, because I read a couple of forums about people asking about football… I would gladly answer your questions.
Where in Oklahoma are you from?? I’m curious because I played high school ball at PC North in OKC and then played a year at OSU. Did OSU give you any love when it came to recruiting?? They need LBers in a big way up there because they graduate 4 this year.

Cell-Tech is a waste of money. Just buy some CEE or Regular Creatine Powder.
I dont know how the people here feel about Animal Pak, but i heard it was just expensive vitamins. Idk i could be wrong

I’m from Enid, Oklahoma. I have a good friend at OSU named Jermiah, he also plays linebacker. Ya… OSU did me wrong lol… Ya they were recruiting me, but ended up dropping me for some piece of shit linebacker named Eric Priest from some fucking small ass school 2a or some shit… Pissed me off, but its cool. OU also wanted me, but I got overlooked by them. I will probally transfer their next yr, hopefully. Ya I heard they got some fucking dude from africa lol… and a lot of people are getting kicked out. Did you play last yr, when did you graduate?
A twenty pound jump might be a lot given you probably have less than 12 weeks until you report. What type of program have you been using?
As far as supplements go…cell tech is a waste of money…just get some plain creatine and mix it with your Surge post workout. Most of the animal pack stuff is also a waste…dont look for magic on the shelf at gnc, go eat more real food. Im not sure exactly whats in those, but make sure its nothing that could get you a positive test at school. The NCAA is always adding to its list of banned substances.
In my personal experience, I found that I wasn’t meeting my weight gain goals, so I went from 1.5g of protein per pound of lbm to 2g/lbs… This was a simple recommendation from TC about five years ago in an email I sent to him. It worked. I had been stuck at 195 and could not get to my 200 goal, so I up’d my protein just a bit more and hit it.
As for your speed goals, I’m on an Xvest kick right now, so I’m going to recommend something like this. I would say that you could train with a 40 lb. xvest over the next several weeks and possibly hit your goal. Perhaps a weighted sled could do the same, but I’ve never used one. I know that there are some guys and gals on this site that have used a sled for training, so perhaps they can chime in.
Good luck man! I look forward to hearing back on your progress.
Thanks, Ya I have jump shoes that work on your vertical jump and also helps takes tenths off your 40 time, which I will be using. Also, my friend has a parachute speed thing… And what I’ve heard on the internet and ads is that it works so… Ill be on that for a while. I try to eat as much as possible, but you think that you are eating a lot, but really your not… I take in probally 3-4 shakes a day… either muscle milk or weight gainner 2250 plus my 3 meals a day. I’m probally going toup my meals to 5 meals a day and add some cardio everyday. I have an all-state game in late july then after that I head to college. I just need to get to 235… That is 10 more lbs and be a good % of fat. Also, I need to be in shape =P… So Ya im going to up my cardio and speed development.
Also, I’ve heard that straight legged deadlift helps improve your speed. Because it stretches those hamstrings and works them.???
If anyone can post some good lat excercises that work I would appreciate it =P. Also, shoulder excercises and possibly trap excercises! ???/?

I would stay away from the strength shoes and parachutes.
Judging from your clean numbers compared to your squat numbers, you should concentrate more on pulling. Do a search for Bill Starr on the net. I used his program right before I went to college my senior year and got really strong.
Old_School_5 wrote:
What do you mean on pulling? Why wouldn’t speed shoes and parachute be good for me?
Pulling = deadlifts, cleans, high pulls, snatches, power snatches, etc. Basically, do more explosive lifts.
Power snatch and power clean are the best bang for the buck there.
“Speed shoes” and parachutes can alter your running form pretty significantly. If you’ve really got good sprint form dialed in, you can use them okay, but if not, stay away from them until you do.
First off i would like to say welcome to the great state of Michigan. I would agree that you should work on your explosiveness. If you think about it, how often on the field do you actually run a 40. Most of your work, especially at linebacker, will be done within 5-10 yards. Although you might want your 40 better to impress the coaches, i would concentrate more on your 20 and agility drills. At my college we only test 40 for db’s and wr’s, dl, lb’s, ol, and rb’s get tested once a year for 40’s but we get tested for agility much more. I would believe that you coaches would rather you can change directions quickly and have tremendous explosion.

Search the net for stuff by Joe DeFranco. He seems to whip football players into amazing shape and to produce, as well.
If you can, get the book by Bill Starr - Only The Strong Shall Survive, Strength Training For Football.
I read it and liked it a lot. The only problem with the book is that it is a bit dated (pics in the book), but still it has great info on all sorts of topics related to football and training for it.
Ya I understand, but in my conference ( MAC ) Mid American Conference, they throw a lot. Most all teams are spread offenses espcially in this conference. I’ll probally drop like from anywhere to 10-15 yrds. Ya I would like to impress my coaches, because speed kills in football. The linebacker that will be ahead of me runs a 4.9.
I’m pretty damn sure I am more agile and quicker then him. My running technique is pretty damn good. I run a 4.5 so I would say it is. I work on my running all the time. Ya I think we dont do that much power-cleans up their… I asked on my visit and they said it’s been causing injuries. Also, as anyone from the collegiate level in football they want to go to the pros.
Running a shitty forty can hurt your draft pick or getting picked up. I forgot that linebacker that got drafted first rd. 15th pick, hes from Texas… He was awarded the Tim Buckus award. I kinda want to be like him. He wasn’t that big probally like high 220’s or low 230’s. But he ran like a 4.5 4.4.
Dont get so caught up on 40 time for football. You need to worry more about agility than 40 time. Im assuming you are an upcoming freshamn. The coaches are not going to care what you run in the 40. They are going to see how much “game speed” you have. 40 times can be “artificially lowered” by learning better starts, technique, etc. This has nothing to do with being able to run in football. Get as big, strong, quick and explosive as you can. concentrate on learning your reads and making plays. That matters a whole lot more than your 40.
Listen to Jay; he’s been there and done that (and continues to do so with his high school athletes). Ask any NFL scout what they look at the most at the combines and they’ll answer “pro-agility.” I’ve been around for dozens of NFL scouts working out our guys, and the sessions are ALWAYS based more on lateral movement than linear speed.

As a football S/C coach, I have this discussion all the time with my players: 40 time and game speed are two different animals. For your position getting to the point of attack is much more important then 4.5 40 time. First step quickness, lateral speed, acceleration, footspeed, agility, and balance are extremely important factors. My players spend more time on multi-directional mobility then linear speed. look at the requirements of your position and work on those. “Dick” Butkus was not very fast straight ahead, but side to side he was a monster. Emmitt Smith also had a “slow” 40 (4.6ish) but he is the all time leading rusher. Just an opinion from a football strength coach.
K, my reads are really good. I’m what coaches say a natural, a specimen… I have a nose for the ball. I ended up my senior season with 123 tackles 2 INT, 3 Force Fumbles, 1 TD, 3 Deflections in 6(a). I just want to lower my 40 a tenth of a second so I can run a 4.4. Also, I do need to work on my quickness and agility. I think the best workout for that is ladders, ropes, etc? ← correct? I want to go into my college and impress all my coaches.
Also, Straight Legged Deadlift will increase your speed correct? Also, it works your back?

Ladders and ropes are all nice an stuff but in order to be quick you have to work on your ability to decelerate and cut in a different direction.
SLDL are able to stretch out the Hamstring and strengthen it as a Hip flexor which in turn could help you to get faster but sprinting is really the only way to get faster.
