so my wife just had a G-tube put in about 3 weeks ago. they have her on formula and thats it, we have the vita blend and the dr’s have said we can start trying things. but i don’t know what to try. she has gained only 5 lbs in the time she has had the tube, which puts her at 93 lbs. but were looking for a faster way and one that helps also balance a growing sugar issue. and the reason she has this tube is caws she has difficulty swallowing. i need to get her weight up for her current health and then to have the corrective surgery to fix this swallowing problem. any input would be great.

I’m pretty sure this is one of those situations where asking strangers on the Internet is going to be less effective than asking the doctor taking care of her.
Wish I could be of more help, but unless it’s as simple as just blending/pureeing food you’d normally put on a plate and squirting it into the tube, I’m out of my depth on this one and I’m pretty sure most people here would be.
Omartinez - Sorry to hear about your wife’s health situation. I have a daughter who has swallowing issues related to Rett Syndrome. Fortunately, she doesn’t have a g-tube, but many of these kids do. Before having my daughter, I had no idea that swallowing requires so much muscle coordination and control. We completely take it for granted that these things just work without thinking about it.
You absolutely need to talk with a GI specialist. Also, people who work with nutrition in disabled people/ the elderly should be very familiar. If Brick sees this he’d be qualified to give you some basic information, but it would be better to talk to her physician. Depending on the health issue, find a support group. I’ve learned so much from other parents. The physicians just don’t always know the everyday tricks of the trade like people who have lived with these things.

A gain of 5 pounds from a starting weight of 88 pounds is very significant. I can understand your concern, but that’s a considerable weight gain in 3 weeks. Although I think formulas don’t differ much really in their carb content or that some care blend in an enteral feeding formula is special at controlling blood sugar, NEPRO (made by Abbott) has “Carb Steady” and can be used for diabetics and renal patients and ha a relatively high protein amount per ml.

thank u to all that have replied. i wish the doctors in the area were more apt to help my wife but there more of the make the money and ditch u type. but if she can get just a little better we will be moving back home to Lakeland Fl. now to “Brick” they have just changed the formula again and we will see what they bring now, but i am going to get the carb steady. i just looked up the nutrition on it, and i am wondering why haven’t they gone with this earlier. but thank u all for chiming in and thank u Brick.
