For those of you that do face pulls, is it okay to lean back with your body to compensate for the load you are pulling? If I try to stand completely straight with out leaning back with my body weight, I can’t complete a rep without tilting forwards? I don’t have a video or picture to illustrate but its kinda like leaning forward while doing pull-throughs except the other way around.
Yes, you’ll be fine.
It will allow for great loads
Yeah, I had the same problem of not being able to stay stable while trying to stand straight. I definitely have to lean back to be able to do heavy loads.
i do them seated on the lat pulldown
its great if you want a huge load
The angle doesn’t matter at all as long as your arms are moving on the proper plane to put stress on the rear delts.

Looking fucking big there man.
isn’t the point to not work the rear deltoid?
Always compensate you wouldnt want to drop a load
I do these in the seated cable low row station. I don’t have to worry about being pulled forward with heavy loads.
Here’s a real good thread about face pulls:

I’d say if your using “huge loads” your probably not doing them right.

What do you consider a “huge load”?
50lbs
100lbs
150lbs
200lbs?
The term FACE PULL always leaves me with something like this in mind.
lol

You also have to consider the speed of which the load is coming to your face.
I use the rope attachment on the seated cable row. I never go over 50lbs.

Push-Ups, Face Pulls, and Shrugs [/quote]
You can do them for the purpose of training your external rotators and lower traps… Or mostly your rear delts + to some extent lower traps.
Different things but both are essentially face pulls.
Lawl @ how many times “huge load” has been said in this thread.

I dont think its possible to NOT work the rear delts durring face pulls… or any kind of pull/row for that matter.
I just do mine with the cable pulley at the lowest setting. Then I will walk backwards about 4 or 5 steps and bring the bar to my forehead.
