Erector Spinae Imbalance

While moving into Dandayamana Bibhaktapada Paschimottanasana I’ve noticed that my right erector spinae has hypertrophied far more than my left. I’m not certain how to do a strength comparison, but I’m fairly certain my right erector spinae often compensates for the left. The imbalance looks so drastic I wouldn’t expect this to take less than a few years to fix, but I’m anxious to make the structural health investment. Where do I start??

As an aside, I fear attempting to address lateral imbalances can easily exacerbate the issue or create other imbalances in support muscle groups and complementary groups. I’d like to start with the most fool-proof method possible.

I’m also interested in the answer; my left erector is more developed.

Of course, if the imbalance is causing spinal issues anyway, then it needs addressing, but as I said, I don’t know of a decent exercise series that will do it.

Thanks. I think my hips have cause more spinal issues that the erector imbalance, so maybe it’s not a big deal.

If you can see your erectors during Dandayamana Bibhaktapada Paschimottanasana, you’re doing something terribly wrong.

Dude, EVERYONE I have examined (and as a back specialist I examine a lot) has assymetrical ES muscles.

so true.

the main thing is good movement that is strong through the range of motion and pain free through same.

if you’re concerned about this apparent asymmetry, you may want to consider getting your whole movement checked with a movement specialist - doing so may even advance the performance of your yoga practice

Surely you are not that vain that you lose sleep over an issue like this?

My interest is in preventing functional issues now and 50 years from now.

I was afraid the only option was a “specialist”.

Not during.

Thanks, all.

oh dear specialist sounds like a loaded term here.
not meant to be - another way of putting it: a coach who knows about muscle testing and firing and ROM

here’s a bit more on why

best with your practice
