DukeTheSlaya's Journey to Overhead Pressing Like a God

Enjoy the last 6 or so weeks you’ve got. Just finishing up grade 11 in QLD and the jump is ridiculous. Grade 12 is going to be a doozy.

PS Don’t do Chemistry or Maths C, you’ll perish

I hate chemistry and im not good at maths so thats out of the question anyway. Im doing the easiest maths class i can, call me a bitch or whatever but i wont even bother going to school if il just fail. I bust my balls in maths currently and only just passed my last test, theres no way in hell i could do good in year 11 with a massive difficulty jump.

Woke up with not much doms, that being said i couldn’t go do leg day right now.

Yeah push presses are great!

To be fair, I didn’t choose the easiest subject since I want to get into Physiotherapy, so don’t get too discouraged. But yeah, if ATAR is anything like QCS (which we have over here), thebbthere is a significant jump up in workload; particularly in Term 3.

Damn, what other subjects do you do?

Physics, Maths B, English Extension, Music. I did Chemistry then changed into Modern History after a week because Chem is honestly f*cked at my school (average grade is a C-), then dropped History at the start of this semester because the workload was getting crazy

How many free periods do you get man?, My two best Subjects are english and hass. (Humanities arts social sciences) . Im also good at media class and Health. I suck at maths and science and those are my Pet hate subjects. I dont know when i get to choose subjects but i know its coming up soon. I want to go down the path of personal training but the problem is its a very difficult job to earn a big income in.

Until I dropped Modern, none. Now I have 5 free periods a week, which I just use to study.

I had this realisation too, which is why I switched my goals from ExPhys to Physiotherapy. That being said, Personal Trainers with a degree in Exercise Physiology do seem to be a bit better off/more popular than trainers with a Cert IV or V. That’s obviously not set in stone though, Dan John has a degree in Theology and Frank Zane was a maths teacher

i mean i could make money with the typical personal trainer audience but i actually want people to work hard and achieve there goals,
There really isnt a high percentage of people who want to put in the work . The problem i see is most people want a personal trainer because there too lazy to train themselves. the people at my commercial gym who use the personal trainer do nothing and even with the trainer half ass it the whole time. In my gym theres from what iv seen only about 3 to 4 people besides myself who actually work hard in the gym.

I have lots of pree periods atm. I do majority of my work at home lol

This is so true. I miss my school’s gym a lot coz I’m stuck in a commercial type jount right now. Back at school no one stuffs around and everyone puts in the work. Shame I can’t train there unless I go back to rugby or rowing

Wish i was born twenty-30 years ago where all the hardcore gyms were still around. Yesterday when i was doing leg curls my mate comes over and says “thats the most relaxed leg press I’ve ever seen” the chick next to me was doing ultralightweight leg presses whilst texting, she looked up but didn’t say anything lol. My mates probably the biggest strongest guy in the gym. In his 40s

I get a personal trainer teaching his client to do bodyweight squats on the crossbars (ie the bars that go in front of and behind you) of a loaded trap bar. Why? Functionality of course!

Trained at a different gym today. (Not going to be a regular thing just went with my cousin 1: have to drive there and i walk to my normal gym 2. I didnt like it)
Ya the place has a dedicated crossfit area, weights and cardio, also does muay thai, bjj and jujitsu classes etc.
The machines, barbells and power rack were all really shitty quality and the machines were fricking weird asf. Also there were so many people packed together so yah big no from me.The gyms massive compared to mine but damn i hated this gym.
Ohp day//shoulders
Ohp warmups blah
30×10
40×3
×3
×6 was meant to do five but did six, so next week will still do six.
×3

30× lots
Bar × A lot
Cable lateral raise 3×10
Weird shoulder press machine
4×12
Leaning side raises 3×10
Facepulls 3×15

Bye horrid gym. Damn this made me appreciate my gym alot more.

That being said there were a few hotties there. everyone was nice and friendly which i liked. Also there was rings and some other cool stuff in the crossfit area.

Tomorrow i might be going there and doing muay thai .

Arm day
Cable curls superset tricepzz pressdown 4×10
Barbell curls superset overhead dumbell extension 4×8
Seated dumbell curls 3×12 supersett overhead rop extensions
Single arm pressdowns 3×20

Ya basically a useless workout. Shitty mmc in 70% of the exercises so i need to find some good ones that work. I trained with my mate and he felt all these exercises alot more even though hes been training for only a couple of months.

I also tried a bunch of exercises including kettlebell overbead extensions and these were great.

Il be trying out various exercises for arm day over the next few weeks and find the ones i like best. Then alternate rep ranges and intensity techniques so its not the same boring arm workout every time.

Two best arm exercises I’ve found: dead stop hammer curls off thighs and PJR pullovers.

PJR pullovers

Dead stop hammer curls are what they say they are. For me I find the trick is to momentarily relax when the DBs are resting on your thighs.

Damn straight. I absolutely abhor useless workouts.. but you’ll need it if you want to press like a God.

It’s those 0.001% minutiae that gets you there. Don’t be like me, always chasing PBs (and major PBs at that) leading to tremendous stress thus bringing me to near burnout.

Eyeing this log. I have plans for my press too as I may transit into boxing.

Regarding arm work - I’d go with a more compound approach

Think, doing close grip bench, dips and PJR Pullovers for triceps and chinups, reverse grip rows and offset dumbbell bicep curls (grabbing the dumbbell handle as high as you can, almost smashing your thumb and index finger against the weight plates) for biceps

You see, with this approach you stimulate the arms really well and in addition to that the rest of your upper body also does a lot of work. With the addition of a bit more isolating exercises (curls and pullovers) you can also really target your biceps and triceps.

The arms will grow alongside the rest of your body as long and they do some work, doing 30 sets of arm isolation per week (or having an arm-spesific day) seems like a waste of time to me, I’d rather do the exercises mentioned earlier as a part of, say an upper-lower spit.

Of course you are free to do anything you want to do, and in a sense you should, it’s a great way to learn about your body and it’s functions
