DukeTheSlaya's Journey to Overhead Pressing Like a God

In my opinion i like things in moderation, im happy getting an average job, average house and average everything as long as im close to family and friends, have a few decent sets of clothes and enough money to support the gym and gains il be happy. So i see no reason pursuing year 11 and 12 when i feel im sufficient enough in things anyway. Things like maths in year 11/12 just gets silly and isnt going to be used in everyday life.

I would very, very strongly recommend doing an apprenticeship. If I was 16 to 18 knowing what I know now, I’d either go into plumbing or become an electrician.

As someone who’s still in school himself i’dd recommend getting the highest diploma you can possibly get. Don’t know where you live, but where i live the higher the paper the easier it is to get a job.

Im not really much of a hands on guy but what are all the apprenticeships?

Nor am I, but anything can be learned. Those two would be my pick because there will always be demand for those skills and you can make seriously good money. It might not buy happiness, but it sure makes life easier.

I live in australia, In year 11 and 12 its mandatory to do maths and english and i struggle severely with year ten maths. Year 11 and 12 is a whole different ball game.
Ive gone from a 3% to 47%to 71% in my last three math tests . I just don’t want to do year 11 and 12 and have to repeat a year because i failed maths.

I might consider an apprenticeship . Downthe road i would like to be a personal trainer though and eventually be a gym manager (not start a branch up just manage one), and the gym manager at my gym told me that they generally hire pts from the gym branches or people they trust to be promoted to the gym manager when the manager leaves or a new gym is opened up. So all is need to do is become a pt at a gym then when a manager position opens up apply for it. I was interested in the army but thats getting less and less interest because lots of running and not being able to eat a “gym bro diet” and access to lift all the time is limited. Lifting is like my safe haven and a place i can go where i can relieve my stress and plus i love to lift.

You’ll figure it out. Best way is to have a backup. Plus, becoming a pt is very, very easy. Complete something like an apprenticeship, then DL your cert III and IV later

Okay guys so im stuck in a dilemma.
after push pressing today and hitting 70kg ×1 i love push pressing (i just love shoulders in general even db shoulder pressing)and as you know my favourite lift is overhead press.

Monday is bench day and now im thinking of changing it to push press day to build my strict press.

Should i keep bench day or do push press day monday instead? I have not much interest for bench but im progressing in the movement and getting stronger and im sure it has some carryover to ohp.

Or what about behind the neck presses on a monday? @danteism what is your take on these.

Well I haven’t read your log too heaving but give it a shot for 6 weeks and see how you feel, it won’t hurt or if it does hurt then drop it again.

Alternately just throw some push presses in on bench day. . .

Thanks for the input, yeah il run behind the nexk press for 6 weeks and see how that goes, if i dont progress in ohp like i was then il put bench back in with added push presses. After btn press then I’ll run push presses for 6 weeks.

Personally, I love behind the neck presses. They have great carryover to both OHP and bench press, and they really hit your shoulders hard - especially the lateral head (and even the rear delts get hit if you do them standing and with control - both of which you should do)

But, there is one little thing about BTN - your shoulders. If you have shoulder issues or you have tight shoulders, sort that out first. BTN is a brutal movement for those who are not qualified to do it and it may cause more harm than good.

But if your shoulders are all good, you could definitely give it a go! Remember that BTN can be used as an accessory as well as a main movement, and oftentimes it is better suited for assistance work, as people’s shoulders tend to take a beating from heavy behind the neck pressing.

When you are pressing be sure to control the movement at all times, and keep the range of movement short enough for it to feel comfortable - some people can go all the way down, others can go just to ear level. Both are fine, you’ve just got to find the best one for yourself. When gripping the bar, take a grip that’s wide enough so your shoulders don’t hurt - I have my index fingers on the rings. I also like to use a suicide grip to further ensure that my shoulders feel good. If my shoulders are still feeling cranky, I’ll throw fatgrips on the bar and press that way. (BTN with fat grips feels amazing, by the way)

If you start to feel pain in your joints/rotator cuffs during the set, end it immediately - you might’ve gone too heavy or your form may have been sloppy so it’s better to try again instead of just grinding away without thinking about the consequences.

I would keep some kind of horizontal pressing in the program, even if it’s, say close-grip bench as an assistance movement it’s better than nothing. (Close-grip bench just happens to be one of the better pressing movements, so that’s definitely one good choice)
Incline bench would be another good choice as it also builds your shoulder strength to a great extent.

But, in short; if you have healthy shoulders, I’m all for behind the neck presses.

Thanks alot for the detailed response danteism!

My shoulders were acting up a while back but when i started doing barbell overhead press all my problems went away!, however close grip bench hurts my shoulders to a degree. I have good shoulder mobility too.

I may just program a monday like this instead of bench:

3-4 sets of ×6 behind the neck press and chest supported rows

Im a bit concerned with doing an amrap set on btn presses ( i always do amrap sets leaving one or two in the tank withall my main lifts, however is it safe for btn presses?)

Seated db shoulder press with machine rows

Dumbell shallow incline press and push-ups

Then some real light pumpy raises and arm stuff as per usual.

So its pretty much the same except not bench press.

I use a suicide grip for regular ohp so il definitely be using suicide grip.

What are you learning in math right now?

Do you plan on being a PT/ gym manager forever?

It is school holidays atm but i was doing simple and compund interest which is very beneficial, before that it was tax rates. Next term ithink its some graphs and charts and that sort of stuff.

Not really but i wouldnt mind it. However being a pt is really hard to attract clients and earn money and establish yourself etc.

if you’re planning on leaving school early then definitely get a trade.

2 extra years working a shitty job won’t benefit you all that much.

Also, I love that your solution to your auntie not buying you the food or anything anymore is to get a job and buy your own. You’re taking charge of your shit which is a damn respectable quality for anyone to have, but particularly so for someone your age.

You’re a good kid, duke. I’m proud of you.

So far a trade sounds like the best way to go, i mean i have no interest in trades but i hate school too so at least this way il be learning a trade and making money at the same time if i get an apprenticeship. If i do year 11 and 12 thats just more suffering. I dont mind doing a solid days work and earning some cash but sitting around doing fuck all in a classrroom gives me the absolute shits.
