Do Gloves Have an Impact?

Does anybody have an actual argument against gloves besides “they’re gay” and “man up”?

I wear gloves because I’d rather have less calluses. I still have them, but I imagine they’d be more severe if I didn’t. I don’t want to deal with crap like ripping calluses off.
I’d also bet that I lift more than a lot of people in this thread calling gloves gay at 16 and a year of training.

You sure about that? I don’t use gloves, it’s true that your hands can get ripped up at first, but i just didn’t see the point in spending money on that, after a couple weeks my hands found a nice medium. They’re not all callousy and terrible, they’re just kind of…leathered over i suppose is the best i can articulate it. They don’t really get torn up anymore. My experience.

Lots of strong guys don’t wear gloves, but there’s no point bashing gloves for no particular reason because you think the way you do it is more masculine.
And as for spending money, my gloves were $4. at Target and I’ve had them since I started lifting. They smell like death and the palms are pretty torn up, but they’ve held up.

when did i bash gloves?

Not you dude, but others in this thread and just in general.
Still no actual evidence about gloves negatively influencing lifting.[/quote]

I guess my preference for not using them is my personal preference for gloves in general, kinda like how someone referred to them being like sex with and without a condom. Whenever I play football, I never use gloves as a receiver, i just like the feeling of my hands better, in fact i feel i catch worse with gloves on. Probably a mental thing.

I thought I needed gloves last august. Lifting in the garage with no air in the gulf coast of Texas blows. I thought I would smash myself into pieces because I would get so sweaty. I never really thought about my grip when doing it and I still had calluses. At the time I was still turning wrenches.

Fast forward, for one reason or another I stopped wearing the gloves. I noticed my grip seemed stronger and felt way more connected to the bar. By this time I had moved on from working on cars, and my hands were really getting soft. Perhaps that was one reason I gave up the gloves. I require tough hands and skin. Calluses came on big hard fast and crazy so I kept them trimmed and ALAS, never had a problem.

Move to this summer and sweat was another issue, though not as bad as last year. I found the wonders of chalk. My poundages on my deads shot up like nearly 70 pounds with chalk. I still get calluses but really, I don’t have to do anything about them. They take care of themselves. The chalk leaves my hands just right, although it dries out my cuticles very badly, which I have a bad problem with even sans chalk.

That being said, I still think gloves are a joke, and I wish I had not wasted so long with them and money on them, before I learned chalk was amazing.

Is that good enough aside from gloves are gay?

One thing to keep in mind is that while wearing gloves may not have a “negative impact” on your lifts, your hands are inherently going to be softer and more easily torn by the knurling on the bar. Someday down the line you will forget your gloves, and that might be a deadlifting or Olympic day. I’m with the chalk crowd on this one…

Personally, I take the gym very seriously. It affects almost every facet of my life, and if I have rough hands then it is merely a trophy of hardwork.

Also, there is nothing like a heavy deadlift without gloves.

Some gyms allow chalk while others do not.

If you do not like stretch marks or getting too big then stay smooth and use your gloves on those light weights.

Pretty boys tend to complain about those things…

I am going to start jerking off with gloves.

Smell the glove.

HAH! I hope someone else got that.

Spinal Tap references are always gold.

You know you are in good company when you can slip a Spinal Tap line in.

If I don’t wear gloves I get callouses.

If I wear gloves I get callouses anyway. In fact my skin bunches up rather painfully.

If I don’t wear gloves and use chalk I have better grip and can lift more.

If I do wear gloves its like using a thicker bar - its more difficult to lift.

If I use chalk I look cool.

If I wear gloves I do not look cool.

I’m hoping to be a physical therapist, so I’m letting my hands get soft again. Anyone here a PT, massage therapist or chiro?

he must be initiated

Do whatever works for you. I wouldn’t seriously worry about what other people think, gay or not. If you like them, and lift well with them, use them.

I like the build up of skin on my hands from lifting. I guess you can it’s a natural glove. For heavy weight lifing like for back excercises and shrugs I use straps because otherwise it would hurt my hands. The straps take the pressure off the wrist hand and forearm and thus causing the muscle group your trying to excersise do most of the work. Less stress on the hands in other words.

I prefer mittens.

Ill move this post to the I’m and idiot thread.

I like what Ripptoe wrote about gloves. “If you wear them, make sure they match your purse” - Classic.
