I haven’t done dips much, ever, because for some odd reason they make me get a deep pain in the middle of my sternum. I still do other tricep work, so this doesn’t really hinder my working out, it just bothers me, does anyone else have this problem?
i’ve been doing dips consistently for over a year and have only recently felt pain in my sternum. i remember someone saying that it means it hasn’t fully grown yet… but im 22 years old so i doubt that. anyone else have any ideas?

yep, I stopped doing them. I could dip quite a bit of external weight, but they still hurt even if it’s just bodyweight.
I have the same thing and i have NO idea what it is.
Happens to me every time I do dips, but only after I finish the set and let go of the bars. It always goes away in a second so I don’t worry too much about it.

Dips are likely problematic because of the stretch of the pectoralis musculature at the sternal attachment point while performing the exercise. If you are doing dips for the triceps try doing them with smaller movements, and in between two flat benches instead of a dip rack…this will alleviate some of the stretch on the pecs…also your hands need to be closer to the body, not wide. Keep in mind that all weight lifting the affects the pec minor, pec major, serratus anterior, and rectus abdominus will produce strain near the sternum which may complicate healing. Use your best judgement.
I used to experience this problem, but for some reason it went away as I progressed and aged. Maybe it will be the same for you?
My roommate had this and went to the doc… it was muscles pulling in the center, nothing to do with bones. Basically “stretching” them too much?
“Don’t do that”…
I’ve experienced those pains in my younger days. No problems now that I’m 45.
