Deadlifting Headaches

For the Second time in 2 weeks I got a headache while heavy dead lifting. the second wasn’t as bad as the first but nonetheless this has never happened before. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Do a search for “deadlift headache” on this site. There are lots of results over the years.

It has happened to me a times. I think my problem is I’m not breathing properly during the lift. Thats the only reason I can come up with.

Your blood pressure and heart rate increase temporarily, but quickly, upon your deadlift. Upon cessation of the lift, blood pressure decreases fairly quickly (within about five seconds). Within about thirty seconds, your blood pressure should have about returned to normal again. Quick rises and drops like that will give anyone a headache.

Thanks for the insight, I don’t think I did anything differently with my breathing the last two time, but I will be doing some lighter sets on Friday so I will pay closer attention next time.

In addition to blood pressure spikes, I find that if I’m not properly warmed up or my flexibility and mobility are lacking, I can develop a tension head ache of sorts that is really caused by neck strain, tight traps et cetera.

Some soft tissue work and adequate warm up sets before working sets usually does the trick.
