Deadlift Form Question

When I deadlift, in keeping the bar as close to my legs as possible, sometimes the bar rubs closely against my shins and the top of my knees. After a few sets, or at the end of the workout, my knees/shins feel a little sore. And no, not because of the workout (It’s not muscular soreness), but because of the bar rubbing up and down against my legs throughout the course of the workout.

Is this normal? Does the bar rub up against anyone else’s legs? I was wondering if it was caused by faulty technique, however all the articles I’ve read do advice me to keep the bar as close to me as possible, so I was just wondering if this is normal or not. Thanks guys!

i keep it pretty close to my legs as well, but not close enough to rub agaisnt my shins. that is normal, powerlifters do that to keep it from drifting too far from them i think (im not sure so dont skewer me on that point). i think putting talcum powder on your shins and knees will help the rubbing. keep lifting hard

Yeah. I make a conscious effort to guide it around my shins and knees on rising/lowering, but sometimes while I’m in the moment I won’t notice it. I feel the soreness afterwards though once I stop. Anyway, thanks for the tip! I’ll try that on my next deadlift session and see if helps.

My friend wears long socks or jeans when he does deadlifts, seems to work for him.

always goes up my shins, is normal

Hmm. Something else to consider. I wear sweatpants lol.

I’ve gotten rips on my shins from the bar while deadlifting. shrugs what sucks is when it rips open a scab.

I didn’t notice I had ripped some skin until I got into the shower yesterday. The water hit my shin and then the pain registered. Normally, I wear long socks. Yesterday, I forgot.

These might help, or any long socks that go up to your knees. I’ve also heard of guys using two strips of athletic tape side by side up the length of the shins to keep them from getting scraped. Course you have to shave your legs but fuck it.

Or, wear pants.
