Scraping Shins on DL

I have been deadlifting for 2 months, and I always have a red line on my shins from where the bar rubbed. Plus, there are times when I scrape my shins up. Is there something I can do to stop this? Would this be a form problem? It’s kind of annoying, walking around with red shins everywhere.

Chalk stops the bleeding. Wipe the bar when you’re done.

wearing sweatpants helps a little

you should be standing in a pool of your own blood bye the time you finish deads

Seconding the sweatpants comment.

Also, you should figure out how to dl without scraping your shins. It’s definitely a form issue, fiddle with your form so that you can deadlift without bleeding shins (but still execute an acceptable deadlift). You may have some weird anthropometry you will have to accommodate.

Aside from that, wear your scabby shins with pride; real men deadlift.

I just pull my socks up a little bit. That usually helps. My shins are so messed up from athletics that they are already scarred to shit anyways.

There have been times I’ve hit a PR without a scratch.

There have been times I’ve cut myself so deep the bleeding didn’t stop for hours.

Its awesome.

Stuff some chalk in the cut if it opens up and finish.

I Second: “Real men deadlift”

try keeping your shoulders down, and dont try to put them forward or backwards, thats what worked for me. it still makes the bar make my legs red but it stopped the bleeding(which i think mostly happens when the bar bangs your legs instead of touching them all throughout the lift)

I have been pulling sumo deads this week and I have not contacted my shins once. Going back to traditional next week so we will see if I still hack them up. I have only done deadlifts 3 times ever, so I am still learning the technique to perfection.

That sounds like a bad idea.

Keeping the shoulders down would allow for your back to start and curve; which is a catalyist for disaster.

For deadlifting; you want to have your chest out and shoulder BACK to keep your spine straight.

This is a form issue. FWIW, I had the exact same issue for years, but the problem was corrected overnight - literally - after I read this fantastic series by Eric Cressey.

Part 1: http://www.T-Nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1582703

Part 2: http://www.T-Nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1588392

Part 3: http://www.T-Nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1607555

Halfway down in Part 2 is the troubleshooting section, and lo and behold, the first issue he addresses is “The Shin Scraper”. Read this, but really, read all 3 articles in their entirety. Among all the great articles I’ve read and saved, these 3 rank right near the top.

Hope this helps.

I’ve never hit my shins… but havnt had a session where i havnt hit scraped my knees at least once!

that means your using good form! keeping the bar close to the body. everyones doin it! really, i always do the same thing its normal like dude up top said “chalk stops the bleedng, wipe the bar when your done” lol!

I disagree that it’s definitely a form issue. I scrape my shins from time to time, and my form is good (so I’m told by people who are more qualified than I). And I definitely don’t look like the “shin scraper” in the Cressey vid.

When I do scrape my shins, it’s one of those problems I solve the old fashioned way: by not worrying about it.

Just out of curiosity, is there anything wrong if you don’t scrape your shins?

Walk proud…

I consider it a Badge of Honor.

What Droogan said, socks are great since they help soak up the blood – less time searching for bandaids and less time mopping up the floor.

I haven’t had skin or hair on my shins for ages, as it should be…

wear soccer shin pads you wuss.

Sorry if you think that. If I can offer a suggestion: I could wear shid pads, long socks, sweatpants, and put a pad on the bar while im at it. <-(sarcasm)

To everyone else though, thanks for the suggestions/input.
