Sometimes when I go heavy on deadlifts/squats I get a burning sensation in the lower left part of my pelvis. Anybody ever heard or experianced this. I think it could be the beginning of a hernia, buit don’t hernias occur suddenly? I lift sans belt as often as possible. Squats are well below parallel and deadlifts are normal stanced.
I have had this. It’s happened on ME deadlifts, but since I’ve gone off of a westside program and don’t really do ME days anymore, it hasn’t bothered me. Take a while off from deads, and keep it submaximal for a while.
I just finished with my second hernia operation. The burning pain you’re feeling is the beginning of a hernia, at least in my opinion. It doesn’t hurt to go get it checked out.
happened to me once…really weird sensation. it felt like putting on ICY HOT. i just didn’t lift as much for awhile…i still get nervous everytime i deadlift.
Try stretching your hip flexors everyday. A good stretch is the lunge stretch with a bench.
Wear a belt for your max. My back was injured for almost a year and it’s not like I used bad form or had a weak core. I’ve never experienced that sensation you mentioned, though. Best to get it checked out.
This happened to me.
Unles you have a lump in yopur groin I wouldn’t jump immediately to thinking that it’s a hernia as I’ve also had one of those and it didnt cause me any pain for almost 5 years until just before I got it operated on. A gp should be able to diagnose it if it is.
Most hip/core problems are reflected as referred pain in the groin area. I am currently seeing a physio about a similar feeling to yours and it turns out its a mixture of hip flexors and inner abdominal muscles.
I would suggest seeing a physio for some hands on treatment - lots of stretich in lunge position as someone before suggested and doing some core strengthening exercise. Try to ditch the lower body exercises for a week or two to give you time to recover as continuing to deadlift will make it worse.
The pain usually comes becuase your body recruits muscles (like hip flexors) not designed to to the job that your inner abdominal and back muscles (psoas etc) are supposed to do.
Hope that helps.

Either standard Hernia or Inguinal Hernia (Gilmores Groin)
Surgery only realistic option 99% of the time for athletes.
Physio little use at this stage.
I though “Gilmores groin” was that lump I got form watching Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel on the Gilmore Girls!
Hey guys,
This has been happening to me ever since I switched from conventional to sumo.
The only way I can really describe it is that one spot feels really hot when I do ME. There is no lump as far as I can tell.
The spot is basically the same place as the #18 on Jay in the attached picture.
Any thoughts?
I intend to get it checked out soon, but I’m curious to see what comes up in the ensuing discussion.
Thats exactly where my tear was .
If you’ve (OP) never heard what can happen if a tear gets too large , especially that close to your sack , well…it doesnt sound pleasant .
I wouldnt continue lifting until a Doc gets a look at it
Ive been having this exact same thing happen to me for years.
About 4 years ago i had it checked out. The doc said i dont know what it is but its not a hernia. I rested for a bit and it went away.
I still get the feeling every once and a while. I just ignore it and ive never had a problem.
I also lift without a belt and can pull well over a triple bodyweight dead with no hernia. Dont let everyone freak you out with injury stories.
Of course get it checked by a doctor but if the tear is very small, a doctor will not even be able to find anything. It sounds like a hernia but it may not be big enough to casue a problem yet. A problem is having your intestine protrude from you body! Do NOT use a lifting belt if you do have a hernia. The internal pressure the belt causes will rip you open faster than your bunk-mate in prison. Maybe this is a good thing by speeding up the inevitable. I have had both sides repaired a few times and still get sharp pains once and a while.

Yeah, but your sharp pains are probably from your son using you as a trampoline while you’re working out ;-]

I agree, I think it has something to do with the hip extensors producing maximal force, possibly the hip flexors kick in somehow to prevent this, it def feels like hip flexors when it happens to me…
