Deadlift and the Diaphragm

I’m hoping some Deadlift gurus can help me out. Last couple of months I’ve been having pain in my mid-back from deadlifting. I’m pretty sure it’s my diaphragm.

I do my best to maintain super stricked form, all legs. I keep my back straight and stiff. Head up, shoulders back. I’m more likely to have the pain if I use a belt. I usually do Sumo style but I have the pain either way. Have any of you experienced this and do you know how to deal with it? Thanks.

Are you doing your dynamic stretches and foam rolling?

It may be his belly button.

In all seriousness, it sounds like you have a rib out.

Go to a chiro and get it popped back into place and then lower the position of your belt a little.

You should be fine.

Yes and no. I have a foam roller, I’ll give it a shot on the area.

If I ever get around to asking the little woman to teach me how to download images. I know, I know, I’m pitiful.

I don’t think it’s a rib. It’s a very general area and not sharp pain at all. Also, It doesn’t really hurt when I’m not Deadlifting. Except for the first time when I wasn’t real careful with it.

Looks like your right. Not the diaphragm. Now think probably the intercostal muscles.

Well, then instead of asking foradvice on the internet with a one sentence description of your symptoms, go see someone.

I still think it might be your belly button, or perhaps your liver.

Didn’t mean to get you upset. I’m just asking if anyone has had the same pain and how they delt with it. I think it’s reasonable to ask this on this type of forum before seeing a doc. Afterall, there are thousands of deadlifters on this site. It is more likely that someone here has had it and delt with it than than some doctor has seen it and successfully delt with.

Seriously, a doctor will say don’t DL for a while. I can figure that one out on my own. I already see a Chiro, he hasn’t helped. It’s not really bad enough to see someone anyway.

Not upset. Just think it is kind of a shot in the dark. It never hurts to go get adjusted and some soft tissue work done.
