Man that is impressive! His shoulders are just huge! I think v taper isnt and appropriate term, looks more like a capital T.
Hams look really big and full in that second pic too.
No way you’re getting that big with light weights. 10 pounds? That’s too light even for a warm-up. Even for preacher curls. Definitely a joke.

It would mean he could get a premium workout by just carrying the groceries in the house. Next thing you know, tons of skinny guys are going to be sticking to 10lbs dumbbell curls wondering why they aren’t big yet.
In fact, for anyone to actually believe 10lbs is what builds arms that big would mean they actually think strength and size are completely unrelated.
All I ever asked is if he was still lifting really light weights, because that’s what he was doing. HE said he grew better. Who am I to argue with him about what works for him? He’s not doing it with 6 BCAAs and a protein shake either, is my guess.
This video shows him working out with light shit-
But there’s no point in arguing, because you have a pathological desire to never be wrong, and the video I saw a few months ago where it came out of his mouth that he does not lift heavy weights any more, and that he started growing better when he switched to lighter weights, has been removed from youtube.
This guy is who he supposedly learned it from, and he’s not lifting anything heavy either…
But you have fun beating up the strawman. I’m going to the gym now.

I’m half way through that video and I just saw him curl what looked like 50lbs dumbbells (at 1:15). If he was doing that in the very video we are discussing, why would you think he is sticking to 10lbs dumbbell curls?

It isn’t about “right” it is about the truth. You don’t get that damned big with 10lbs dumbbell curls even if you use “lighter weight” now to work on the contraction. Are you really arguing otherwise?
The man is in his 40’s. He is trying to avoid injury at all costs so he remains competitive. OF COURSE someone would reduce the weight used when they are at that level and that age. That doesn’t mean that is how he got to be that big in the first place. Get it?

That, and “lighter weight” is relative. 400 lbs could be “lighter weight” to a guy who squats 600+. 50 lbs is probably “lighter weight” to a guy who could easily curl a house. 10 lbs is nothing, even for the 110 lb little girl I trained yesterday. If he WAS curling 10 lbs and having a hard time with it, it was probably at the tail end of a giant ass compound drop set of preacher curls. That’s the only circumstance under which 10 lbs feels heavy.

My mom got HYYOOOOOOGGGEEEE carrying the damn groceries (plus 'roids). Old school brown paper bags.
Seriously, man. Curl 10 pounds in the gym and think about it.
Aragorn wrote:

Precisely.
Bigger guy at my gym said he’s not lifting heavy anymore due to aches and pains he keeps getting from years of lifting.
I still see him HS pressing 5 plates a side, along with other stupidly strong movements.
If those are 50 lb dumbbells, dude’s hands are the size of normal people’s heads. Those are at the heaviest 30 lbs. Truth, huh?
I never said he “got big by lifting light weights.” I said that “he said he grew better when he lifted light weights.”
Maybe his form was better, maybe he was taking better drugs, I don’t know. I was relating what I saw him say.

HE’S 6 FOOT 2. Yes, his hands could easily be that big. Fuck, look at the rest of him. I have big hands as well and I’m only 5’10".
Many older guys claim they see better progress over the age of 35 in spite of using lighter weights than they did when they were around 25. That has to do more with the fact that he built a solid base many years ago and is now refining his physique more than simply working on all out size.

What you don’t see is the 4 other exercises he already had done for biceps at that point.
I had a guy at the gym that always came in as I was finishing up my workout. When he finally saw me working heavy complexes at the beginning of a workout he told me “I thought you were one of those lightweight high rep guys”. His impression of me was essentially what I did for finishing exercises, I stopped talking to him.
How can you characterize an entire lifetime of training by the use of “10 pound” dumbbells at one instance? You couldn’t use it to characterize a workout as a whole, much less the lifetime of work that built arms like his.
I’m 6 FOOT 1, and my hands aren’t half the size of a 50 lb hex head dumbbell.

I mean you, dumbass! I haven’t seen you in like a week…
Disclaimer: Calling Prof X a dumbass in real-time may have the unpleasant side effect of getting you fucking flattened. That is all… ; )
Oh, and Freeman looks absolutely fucking sick! Massive size and no pregnant gut = AWESOME!!!
For the record, I just don’t feel the same camaraderie on this site that I used to. I don’t even see any of the bigger guys who used to come here posting anymore. Instead, I get to argue with little guys who haven’t even built their arms past 15" as they tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about.
That means “lack of interest” is why I haven’t been here as much. This is a bodybuilding board that hates bodybuilding.
Kind of in the same boat here, slightly different though. I barely post anymore, either I’m over my OCD with posting here, or it just got old reading the same crap all the time and reading the same old tired debates
Fuck, here we go again. futurepharm you should rethink more before you type. Before anything, you should be a little more aware who you’re talking to and how stupid is the point of discussion.
You seem to be those guys that hold onto weider’s principles and believe everything they read and see.
DoubleDuce said it, 1) it’s his last exercise, 2) he is not doing that for other purpose than pumping up his arm (do you know what a pump is? do you know you can still pump your arms without any weight?
I wouldn’t doubt you have trained more than once with really light weights with the expectations of growing more. You don’t seem to have the notion and differentiation between moving weight and contracting the muscle.
Or let me guess, you have the illusion that you could win a bench press contest against Toney Freeman.
You’re ruining a great thread.
Finally, you’re implying that bodybuilders (pro) are weak, which is soooo outdated.
I simply asked a question, and it was turned into this.
Scroll back through the fucking thread and look at what I originally posted before you mouth off. I implied nothing of the sort.
HE, Toney Freeman, said that HE was training with light weights and growing better by doing so. I, me, said that “it sure doesn’t look like it.” If Professor had just said, “I don’t know, I hadn’t heard that” and moved along nothing else needed to be said. When I explained where I’d heard that, he implied that I’m too stupid to understand words coming out a man’s mouth. The same guy who thinks a 50 lb hex head dumbbell is the same size as a man’s clenched hand. And implied that it was due to him being of a relatively normal height…
I know, he’s a dentist, yada yada yada. Treat people with the respect you think you deserve, or get treated with the same level of respect you give other people.
futurepharm wrote:
No, he specifically said that he’d stopped lifting heavy weights to lift lighter weights and focus on the contraction.
I wish the videos were still up so I could just point you to them, but they are gone.
In all fairness, I saw the same video. It’s the one were he is training with his son. And yes he does say that he believes that he grows better using light weights and focusing on the contraction.
Thanks, dude.
That’s ALL I ever said.
wow… those are some amazing shoulders
No one ever claimed that he never worked with heavy weights in the first place.
No one ever said he got his arms by doing ONLY preacher curls with 10 pound dumbells or that it wasn’t his last exercise.
No one ever said pro bodybuilders are weak in this thread.
No one ever said HE CAN’T move big weight if he has to.
No one ever said they can get in a bench contest with him.
No one ever implied any of those in this thread either. Look for yourself if you don’t believe me.
The guy just asked if he still uses light weights because - wait for it - that’s what Toney Freeman does and that’s what he says he does. He doesn’t row 405 and then just say he does 225 to fool his opponents - he actually uses 225 because he says it works for him. And no he doesn’t use relatively light weight, like 405 for bench instead of 495. He NOW uses weights that most people who trained for 3 years seriously, could use.
There are about 5 people and 1 page of posts responding to stuff that no one ever said or implied in this thread. Pure bullshit. All you had to do was actually read or watch the videos of Toney Freeman to see that he now uses light weights. And that was the answer to the question. That’s all that was asked, in fact, the asker said “Sure doesn’t look like it” in his first post, meaning he has a hard time believing it himself. He didn’t say he is weak, he didn’t say he never used heavy weights, he didn’t say his arm size is the result of his 10lb preacher curls.
If you read or watched some before you spoke, you would see that “Does Freeman still work out with really light weights?” is a very fair question in this case: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KFY/is_5_25/ai_n19330138
And no, those are not 50 pound dumbbells unless they’re made with a special material. These are what 50 pound dumbells look like, I don’t think you need to use your Print Screen function to see the difference: pbnycmuscle 50lb dumbell curl workout - YouTube
I came to this thread to look at these pictures one more time and see what people said about his awesomeness and saw the real problem why this is never going to be a good bodybuilding forum. Believe me, it’s not people who claim ‘pro bodybuilders are weak’ anymore. And this shit will repeat in 2 days with 5 dudes raging against 1 person who obviously didn’t want to start an argument in the first place. If you can’t see why this thread was really ruined then you fail.
