I do my best to convince them of the benefit to this exercise, but not all the girls are willing to perform the movement.

what’s the big deal about 135 pound cleans? That’ll take all of what, 15-20 seconds?
I want this bet. Someone put their money where their mouth is.

TC, you’re my boy and all, but I don’t think watching you do that workout in those outfits, while bouncing your ass off of those balls, wouldn’t be quite as appealing as the current video.
Although I’m sure his power clean technique would be more appealing to watch, the form shown by the first girl to get to the cleans is atrocious, she’s walking all over the place after each rep!
In my learning process of figuring CF I found out a few things regarding WODs.
The prescribed weight is recommended to an average weighted person of 170lbs. I forgot how much females do. But hey in a world of equal rights, and possibly ideal equal treatment, females should be held to the same guidelines. Otherwise we’d be back in the whole lifting makes girls big, bulky, and manly myth era. If a guy can’t hack the weight they go lighter and build up etc blah blah. So this explanation could justify the 95lbs for some of those elite females. So what kind of weight would that be for a person over 200lbs, like a 250lb dude (where I started from)?
Do the math, I made a small table for myself when I started off. If you like to reduce the weight on the bar as your weight changes…well that’s up to you if you lower it, keep it the same, or raise it.
Like the kid who jumps up and grabs onto the roof and pulls himself up and then pushes himself onto the roof…muscle ups can be done on a pullup bar. If there is good head room though, I’ve seen some gyms where the roof isn’t that high from the bar.

That “coach” response that was posted around page 2 of this thread was interesting to say the least in kinder words.
I know we don’t need to defend our favorite authors on this site, but c’mon what does the “coach” gain by defaming Iron John? The “coach” is mad about Iron John not defending CF? Well how about this instead-
When should anyone defend CF or anything else? Should CF be defended if the accusations or claims are correct through many POVs? I’ve defended certain things about CF, I will admit that. But they were certain things that can’t be really be summed up as one group of things. Should CF be defended, by people that have been or are associated with CF, no matter what? These questions can also be applied to aspects of life away from exercise as well. I think if anything, CF should stand on their own without as it lays. If there needs to be an explanation as to understand something, then I see no problem in that. Obviously that doesn’t happen there too often.
As far as the “coach” comment about marketing and advertisement. I believe that has changed this past year. Outside magazine covered it a few times. Men’s Journal has covered it twice. The NY Times has covered it in which the story used in that article was right out of the Rhabdo journal almost verbatim. If that’s not “free” and free-speech marketing and advertisement…well that’s enough said.
As far as the TC-Challenge…he could have just issued the challenge here at T-Nation rather than hold it back on his site. Actin’ like TC cruises into CF to read his “articles of faith”. Even the Gracies, back in the day, stuck out there challenge for everyone to see, read, and hear. Granted even that world changed as a result of the Gracie challenge. Better or worse, who cares until internet warrior beefs. There was a change in both.
Great “Pukey the Clown” t-shirts though.
Did I mention I’m afraid of clowns?
If you delve a little deeper on their website, there is definitely an undercurrent of black & white, Limbaugh-esque politics. Lots of quotes from right-wing and libertarian think(?) tanks, etc.
Whatever. It’s a free country. Sort of.
Hi,
I just stumbled across this thread and wanted to contribute a few things.
LOTS of real millitary and special forces use crossfit. I know this becuase I’ve met tons of them at various crossfit events. The Commanding Officer of Phase 2 BUDS (SEAL training.) is one of the most active members of the crossfit community and reccomends it to all his men.
The coach suffered a serious injury when he was a gymnast. He can’t do any serious working out. This doesn’t make him a bad coach. (Show me one football or basketball coach who can match his players ability.) Coach Glassman is busy thinking about workouts, fine tuning atheltes, and focusing on teaching. Nothing wrong with that.
Crossfit is designed for a specific purpos - General Physical Preparedness. It is NOT designed to make you massive. It may or may not be a good thing for you depending our your personal goals. (It is absolutey the wrong workout for a body builder trying to gain size. It is a great workout for a soilder preparing to go into combat.)
One of the principles is mixing carido with weights. That is very applicable to sports or combat. You may be called on to push, pull, or carry weight while running or out of breath. Crossfit is great for that type of activity. As mentioned before, it is not good if you want to bulk for a competition.
The olympic lifing knowledge comes from an internationaly ranked coach named Mike Buergner. He has trained a large number of national and internation champions and is one of only a few internationaly ranked coaches recognized by the US Olypic Weight Lifing Association.
Just becuase it is different doesn’t mean it sucks.
The 4 principles of training:
-Accommodation
“we don’t change programs.”
-Overload
“The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience.”
-Specificity
“Our specialty is not specializing.”
-Individualisation
“Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.”
“Coach”= The Wizard of Oz
I checked out my local crossfit site, and it pissed me off. I set up an appointment, and I’m going to go play with crossfit.
I have trained multiple people for BCT/OCS USSS PT, USMS PT, and competitive athletes. Hearing what they are going to do to me to get me in shape and earn my money would be a laugh and a half for me. I will post my conversation with Crossfit in Fairfax, VA and let you guys know about it.
BTW, the “Crossfit girls” on the Fairfax Crossfit site, definitely make me not want to put my lady on it.

I do that when I get my deadlift weight on a rack to unload it. I did not know that there was a name for it.

That is the best analysis of CrossFit I’ve ever read. Good job.

I agree. But on the Crossfit site they claim it is superior than the average bodybuilding workout for people not on steroids.
Crossfit is a fine workout but they make outrageous claims and the “Coach” seems like a dickhead.
I do not get this Crossfit site.
They seem to use T-Nation information quite often, sometimes they post links or whole articles from this site while simultaneously calling this site a bunch of juvenile wankers.
What is it?

TC I hope you’re not even contemplating the ‘challenge’ idea. Why would you think of playing to his game? Who gives a shit who’s better?
I laugh at his ‘warfighters’ term. Hilarious. How a grown man could use a term like that is beyond me.
Cause when two sides have talked crap about on another, you sometimes have to walk the walk to put an end to it.
And please dont bring up “taking the high road”. Crap has been said on both sides.
That being said I hope TC takes the challenge and wins.
I hope Spoken and TriGWU are still reading this … TriGWU said he would try this around July, (sometime around now) and Spoken was about to get bitchslapped when TriGWU actually completed it.
Jimmy is getting pissed. He’ll be visiting the crossfit people and get to the bottom of this.
Jimmy will also find out if the Dan John comments are lies. But Jimmy would also like to hear Dan John confirm or deny before he takes things to the next level.

Jimmy has a man crush on the dude in his avatar.
Jimmy wants to take the place of the fern.
The workout that those 3 chicks were doing is definitely tough as nails. After looking at a few other vids it looks like their trainers or whatever they are called all look like nothing. But I was definitely impressed with that chick vid. If anything that took a great deal of endurance.
Now, what the fuck is the point in doing kettlebell squat raises? If you can do an upright row with that weight you shouldnt be doing a squat with it. Its way to fucking light.
Some of their olympic lift vids were painful to watch. I was waiting for someone to break in half. The chicks did lose form often but you cant expect perfect form with how much shit they did.
