Confusion with Step-Ups

Yeh, my ‘wheels’ are not massive, but what muscle is on there is entirely attributable to bodyweight pistol squatting. If pistols can build some muscle, they are not a BB exercise?

You, apparently have not even posted a pic. Normally I wouldn’t even care about this because I try to find fault with the argument, not the man, but since you try to speak as an authority on a bunch of different things, you need to show us why we should give you the respect you seem to think you deserve.
Props to you for posting a pic. Few do.
You are right being sarcastic, and bitter is the right way to teach a beginner if step-ups are good or not. You and Professor X should have a fucking pity party back in the “golden age” of bodybuilding. Since you guys know it all, and have COMPETED (wait, what?) I would say that you do not even need to post here anymore because your sponsors are taking care of your MASSIVE MASSIVE legs.

You side stepped the message of my post, for someone with such a vast knowledge of EXPERIENCE, and EVIDENCE you sure have not backed it up. AT ALL.

As for my opinion on step-ups in building the quads… They did nothing to help me. But they might help you, GIVE THEM A SHOT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS AND DEEM FOR YOURSELF IF THEY ARE A WORTHWHILE MOVEMENT.

As for my physique, it is shitty. Difference between you and I… I know it is, and work on it. While you and X seem to think you are already top level. Humble yourself bitch, quit thinking you know everything.
Hahaha! Good post.

The only difference is Prof X has posted pictures of his hard work and progress throughout months, and most of the time, he knows what he’s talking about.

Even TheBird, someone I’m not even fond of, has suggested that people who feel they are knowledgeable and give advice must have pictures of themselves. But all what that Yolobitch’s been doing since joining has been to throw some snarky comments here and there and often time, personal attacks. Constructive criticism from him always comes later.

Let’s see what the great knowledgeable Yolo looks like. I can fucking guarantee you he doesn’t even look like a BBer.

He just ignored posting a pic when I called him out on page one. Lets see if trying to shove the square block into the circle hole will happen. Guarantee even if we somehow pull it off and he does it will be done with the most generous of lighting at some obscure angle. You said you’ve consistently read this website, a bodybuilding forum, since 2004, if your not super impressive by now that’s pathetic.

This is just a hunch, but I bet it’s because hes a douche bag, has a lousy physique and is a fraud

Depends what shoes I’m wearing. I wear a lot of Vibrams and shoes with no heel, so I usually buy jeans etc with an inseam of 32 inches or less. And I’m just over six foot tall lol. I think I have short legs for my height or something.

You know who has the room to focus on “weighted step ups” as opposed to “squats, leg press, leg curls, deadlifts, hack squats, machine squats, leg extensions, lunges”? The huge bodybuilder who is looking for some way to refine what is already an extremely muscular physique.

I swear, no one needed a thread filled with people acting like weight step ups are now an exercise 99% of the weight lifters in the gym need to be focused on. I mean, shit, you can do pretty much ANYTHING and try to justify it. That doesn’t mean that is what the average looking average lifting average thinking poster on this site needs to focus on.

I would LOVE to know the leg development of those who think the rest of us have insulted you by daring to state that “weighted step ups” sounds like doing shit just to say you did it unless you have the physique to back it up.

I seriously doubt this is the exercise I’ve been missing out on…but please, let’s dedicate the next 5 pages to exclamations about how GREAT this exercise is.
Who said you’re missing out? If you don’t like or value them, don’t do them.

Actually lunges–and stepups, which are pretty much a lunge variation–along with OTHER leg exercises–can GET someone to where they want to be.

Example of a leg workout:
Squats
Lunges or stepups
Leg curls
Stiff legged deadlifts

Actually lunges and stepups have allowed me (and others) to perform better in the big exercises like deadlifts and squats and get some good glute growth and ham-glute tie-in.

I get your point, but it’s not like anyone is saing you, X, must do lunges or stepups.

The BW pistol squats and Step Up comparison was because OP made a similar thread about pistol squats to this one.
This is really the basis of the problem people have with the OP (whose posts I can’t actually see since I’m ignoring him). The pistol squat thread was ridiculous and hypothetical, his “only train muscles you can’t see” thread was similar, and now this. It’s anybody’s guess if he’s even doing step-ups, or just wants to ask questions about them, since he’s admitted that he doesn’t do all the things he’s asking about in his threads. OP doesn’t give a shit about actually working out. It sounds like he wants to write a revolutionary fitness book to change the world, without ever setting foot in a gym. I don’t think this thread would have gotten the response it has if alternate didn’t have this track record.

OP also said he can’t find pants that fit because pistol squats made his legs too big.
i feel like its not hard at all to outgrow the skinny cut trend in merica these days :,/
I can’t wear skinny jeans, and I assume most of the guys on here can’t either. I pretty much can’t waer any jeans from places like H&M. But there are plenty of brands that still make jeans with thighs that are cut loose. You would have to be in the 30" range to truly have trouble finding jeans that you could wear. And if your thighs are that big, there’s a good chance you’re the running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and can afford to have your jeans made for you.
Same problem with jeans for over a decade. Finally I stumbled upon Timberland and Nautica Jeans who make great styles for well built guys.

Man this thread has turned into a clusterfuck. Step-ups, no step-ups, you can do whatever the FUCK YOU WANNA DOOOOO.

Does a thread about step-ups belong in a bodybuilding forum?

My thoughts…meh. Go train!

Given his lower back injury… i.e., no more spinal loading for the rest of his life… what would you recommend instead?
Leg Press
Unilateral Leg Press
Leg Extensions
Leg Curls

If he is looking for bodybuilding hypertrophy, he should do standard bodybuilding hypertrophy exercises like everyone else does. Based on this and other threads he is far too concerned with mental masturbation than actual lifting. All of the theory and hypotheticals should be replaced with actual lifting, especially as a total beginner and not some elite level guy searching for the extra 1%.
Great post. Getting to the heart of the matter beats discussing hypothetical scenarios all day just so there is more to argue about.
leg presses have already been mentioned as no good for many with back injuries…why do you keep ignoring this?

Lunges
Split squats
one legged leg press maybe
extension
curls

that would be better.
I agree. As someone that has dealt with bad discs (L3-4,L4-5) and surgery, I can say leg that standard leg presses killed my back whenever I tried them. When done 1 leg at a time however, they are excellent. I like the addition of lunges as well.

Depending on how bad the OPs back is, he might be able to do front squats. I was doing those pain free at one point. It transfers a lot of the load from the lower back to the upper back and destroys your quads.

These HS machines are awesome for people with back issues and I’m glad my gym has them both:

I mostly wear 7 jeans. The denim they use stretches well, so while they’re tight in the thigh area, they’re still super comfortable.
