You’ve been doing some mighty nice lifting, Strick.
Do you listen to music when you cardio?
Thanks, math. I do sometimes listen to music. The treadmill is in the computer room. If one of the munchkins is on the computer, I don’t listen to music. So they can hear the computer.
It definitely helps to have it playing, though.
I even went through a phase where I would put a movie on the PC, when walking…Chronicles of Riddick, Pathfinder, etc… Fight scenes always had me upping the pace…

Thanks 63G. I think my triceps are fairing a little better than I expected. And, yes, my girth is growing everyday :)
You know thats not what I meant.
Oh, I know. I am just picking at myself.
My wife has always said that I don’t know how to take a compliment. It just feels weird to hear them. Not sure why…
This is a pic my Dad happened to send the other day. It is my Grandpa, Big Strick, just before, or just after, turning 19…on the deck of the USS San Francisco. He joined when he was 17. Be mindful that he is 6’3". Must have been a giant back then.
Somewhere I have a pic of him, several years later, standing in the yard with a bar in his hands with 2 locomotive wheels on each end. I’ll have to see if I can track it down.
Really disappointing day. My lower back was still fried from the other day. I have got to cut back on the deads, rack pulls and RDLs. I have been doing one of these every other workout. On the day in between, the seated rows help keep it fried. Of course none of this was helped by the fact that I am on call and was up for 2 1/2 - 3 hours in the middle of the night, last night.
Oh well…time to recover, something I suck at, and regroup…again.
Recovery…recovery…recovery.
Deadlift
135x10
225x5
315x3
405x4
455x1 - could barely lock this out, which is supposed to be the strong part of my deads.
Squats225x5x2
315x1
335x1
355x1
380x0 - got a little forward and my back gave
315x4
I forewent the shoulder work, as I am going to start grouping it with chest, and back with legs, so that I am not hitting the lower back every friggin’ workout.

TBS - tired back syndrome - is why I started doing chest supported rows. It just gets to be too much extra work on the back to do the regular sort. Putting squats and deads together works as long as your not maxing on both and controlling volume pretty tightly, in my opinion. Others have disagreed with me (in no uncertain terms) but that’s been my experience. Usually one eats the other, otherwise.

The original is a bit clearer, but I had to blow up the one he sent me.
Later in life, he had both legs amputated just below the knees (Diabetes). The hospital bed he was in had a handle hanging just above him so he could use it to reposition himself. I can remember him, even at 60 years old, grabbing the handle and pulling his entire body off the bed, with one arm, to reposition himself.
One of my favorite stories about him is from when he was a state trooper. He had put on a few pounds and that was pointed out to him by the head trooper (for the state). The gent told him he needed to lose some weight. The story goes that my grandfather told him to get out of the chair, do as many pushups as he could, and he (my grandfather) would double them. Nothing further was mentioned about his weight.

I think that is exactly it. Right now, my hips, knees, elbows, chest and back are aching. I am just not recovering enough.
That being said, I have made a monumentous decision (at least for me). I am going to take the next 3 days off, to recover. Then, come Sunday, I am going to jump on the 5/3/1 bandwagon. 3 working sets still doesn’t seem like enough to me…but too many people have had success with it to ignore it and, honestly, what I am doing is obliterating me. Something has to give.
Besides, with the chaos at work, the whole T thing and other things going on, it will be nice to go into a workout and KNOW what has to be done, rather than figuring it out.
I figure I can give it until Christmas, to see how I am doing. If it works well enough, I can just keep going until I feel the need to change up.

Welcome to the darkside! Make sure you read the e-book cover to cover.
Lol…thanks jjack. I have the book and have read it through a couple of times, as well as a lot of spot reads. The only thing to figure out is going to be the accessory method to use.
LS, I change up the accessory stuff all the time. Last night I felt like just doing deads so I switched to the Big But Boring method and dropped the GMs I was supposed to do. Sometimes during the week I only have time for the main exercise and thats all I do. Very flexible workout program.
JoeGood - I hate going with the crowd. When what they are doing works, though…it is hard to argue with success.
eco - that may be what I end up doing…just going with what the day feels like or time permits. I have to admit, I am looking forward to not aching all of the time.
Yeah. Figure out what accessory work will give /you/ the best benefit, and go for it. BBB is good for endurance, and I use it, but for some lifts I find I need some other accessory work in addition to or in place of it to help strengthen certain muscles. And switching up the acceessories will help keep you both challenged and engaged.
soldog wrote:
I feel free to add and subtract stuff from the assistance exercises all the time.
I think my biggest challenge will be to adjust to the volume/intensity and not overdo the assistance.
Now I want to go lift…even though my body is wiped out.
Another 5/3/1 convert? Hope it works for you. Everyone seems to like it. As for squats and deads on the same day, I love it. I’m not doing a lot of pulling on other days, though. Love the picture of your grandpa. Got one of mine in my profile. By the standards of the day yours was a monster. Looks like he past that on to you.
