40 reps? I’m not sure I could count that high without one of these counters that bouncer’s use to comply with fire codes. You sure packed on the volume today. Good work.
lol…I had planned on 50, but started to feel a tad in the shoulder around 38. I think I was just fatiguing and form was starting to go.
I just keep hoping that pounding the shoulder, with weights that don’t hurt it, will lead to a quicker recovery. With an impending meet, it would be nice to actually be able to train bench before we go.
JimmyT will go with us. He has plenty of experience. Former National Champ, State Champ and so on. And Ive been to a meet, does that count? lol.
I went to NASA’s site. Things have changed. A Masters 1 220 is benching in the 570s, a Masters 5 (thats 70+) is a tad over 400. A few mo ago thy were no where near that. I know several lifters. None of them can duplicate that.
I think that a lot of guys are on HRT. Its a whole new ball game. A guy thats on HRT is not the same as a guy whos not. Thing is this is supposed to be a drug free league. To me that means DRUG FREE. Theres no why I can compete whith a 600lb bench.
Ive emailed NASA. Dont know what they will say. Lets see. I talked with JimmyT and he said he was of the same opinion. He is looking at another league. Ill let yall know.
There’s a gazillion leagues, many good, many not so good. The downside, as many people have stated, it waters down the competition. The upside, you can always find a meet somewhere and get some experience.
The first meet I ever did was unsanctioned, but it was a great time with a lot of very strong dudes. I’ve done a couple of APA meets. APA is not real competitive in the New England area as it is in other parts of the country. At least the two meets I did.
The first meet I did we went out front of the cave, found some nice round stones, used a straight old mammoth bone,…
dive into the water. Think I asked you once what you wanted to do with your lifting. Time to find out. You’ll do fine and you’ve already got a good group to go with. You may embarass yourself. So what? Soldog admitted to knowing what a codpiece is. Now that’s embarassing. BTW, you’ve been lifting great, especially the zerchers.
Thanks for the encouragement. I know it is something I want to try. No point in putting it off too long.
Hel, you’re not that much older than me. I’m sure they, at least, had bronze bars when you 1st competed
I bombed out of a meet once. That was a bit embarrassing, but it was a good lesson learned. I was starting to think I was all that and a bag of chips. Brought me back down to Earth.

Just let me know what you gents decide on. I’m flexible, figuratively speaking.
LS, sumo may take a few sessions to get used to. Its all I use now. When my shoulder was bothering me I was able to do close grip bench with very little to no pain. Good luck finding a meet.

I doubt I will transition to sumo. It will make for a good alternate workout though. That being said, you never know.
Interesting on the CGB. Even when my shoulder was fine, the CGB seemed to stress it pretty hard. Incline and decline really stressed it.
It’ll sort itself out…assuming I am patient. That is the hardest prescription of all.

What ever Fed you lift in I know you’ll give’em hell, LS.
Thanks, JoeGood. I will do my darnedest. Good thing is that I don’t need to out lift the world to feel good about it. Just being in the mix with a group of guys that are strong would be, for me, an accomplishment in itself.
I switched to sumo a month or two back, and I love it. Took a couple of sessions to get used to, but I feel much stronger lifting sumo than I do lifting Romanian. And it is easier on my back. I feel my form’s more solid when I lift sumo, too.
Give it a try for a few sessions. Once you get used to the close-in hand position and the bar hitting the insides of your knees, you may like it. It’ll tear up your inner thighs and glutes for a bit, though.

I hope it doesn’t get the inner things any more than the zerchers. I did them last friday and this morning is the 1st day that they haven’t been sore. Convenient, since today is DL day
Knee is still a bit whiny. I will try the sumos today, assuming that the knee plays well.
I dropped the rack pulls down to the bottom pin (8" off the floor), trying to get as much ROM as possible without doing full DLs, and it felt heavy as hell. Best I can figure is this must put my starting position at the top part of my weak area (upper shin area)…because it felt really freakin’ heavy. The set at 475 and subsequent epic, dumdass fail at 525, obliterated me. I was just surviving through the rest of the workout.
On a good note, all of my shrugs were done with overhand grip and I was able to keep the bar in my palms the entire time. Normally it slips down into my fingers. So grip is definitely improving.
Rack Pulls - Lower back felt like it was ready to rupture. Didn’t seem to hurt anything…just like it was reaching stress capacity.

I was really kind of upset with the rack pulls until I realized that I was starting in my weak spot. Put a 2x12 under my feet and I will be right in the middle of it. Whatever I can pull from here, I am pretty sure I can DL.
Thanks gents. I figured I was in the weak spot because I can pull 500 in a full DL, but I benefit from the momentum right off the floor. 500 from here might not have gone. Next time I think I’ll move it back up one pin and use the 4 1/2" platform I have, putting it at 2" lower than these. That should be dead center of my weak spot. Once I can pull 500 from there, a new PR will be in the wings.
jjack, the 455 may have looked easy, but it definitely didn’t feel it. At pin 2, no problem. It is amazing the difference those 2 1/2" can make.
I’m the same with my deadlift. If I get it an inch off the floor, I can lock it out. I’ve done rack pulls a few times with the Sheiko and just below my knees, it was a muthah to get that weight moving.
I used to sumo in my 20’s and could pull 500 without much training, but then my knee arthritis deteriorated to the point where I had to hang up the sumo. The knee is why I’m in a race to squat 500, then it will just be push-pull meet after that.
