Bulking Thread

Yeah I just bought a cooked whole chicken…mmm it’s so good haha I love the dark meat too. I still didn’t seem to find them though…I will be heading there the day after tomorrow so I will have to ask someone…was in a bit of a rush today they were on the brink of closing.

Deat I also read pretty much all over the internet that 3.5oz chicken (100grams) is about 30 grams of protein…which would make 7oz (60 grams) of protein…how is it your 8oz is only 50 grams of protein?

I’m just tryni to measure out my chicken (fat all cut off, just the meat) to get to 50g’s of protein…what’re your thoughts?

Thanks!

Is $2.99/lb typical at costco? I’ve always heard the prices there were great but I just bought chicken for 1.99/lb at ShopRite and about 20lb of steak for 1.49/lb

WHAT?!!

Is ShopRite local? I would eat steak 3x a day if it were that cheap around here

You need to figure out:
What cut it is (boneless skinless, drumstick skin on, if it’s a whole chicken slow cooked it will have more fat even in the breast, from cooking)
Is the weight or mass cooked or uncooked?
Find a good nutrtion database online

I don’t count calories or weigh anything I just eat a chunk of meat with nearly every
meal (between 30-70 grams)

The breasts at costco that I’m speaking about are half pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, in comparison to cheaper breasts theses are larger and the meat is very high quality (the difference is noticable). Costco makes their profit from membership fees, their prices reflect the cost of goods + labor + facilties + shipping.

I would think that is some real cheap cuts of steak for that price. The cheapest I have seen rib eyes anywhere is 4 bucks a pound. Different cuts go for different prices though.

isnt a lean piece of chicken/turkey meat roughly 8 grams of protein per ounce? something like that?

Thats some cheap meat you bought. I’m going to costco today to try to stock up. hopefully the prices are still that cheap.

.greg.

Different sites/labels will have slightly different values. Shelby Starnes suggested I use nutritiondata.com and I simply use that for all calculations. They have

Top round steak = 10 grams of pro per oz cooked
Chicken breast= 9 grams
Lean Ground Turkey= 9 grams

etc

Even if you are off, as long as you are consistent with your counting(if you bother to count) you’ll be fine.

The chicken at Costco also comes in slick packaging that separates one or two breasts into thick, perforated bags that allow you to use what you need and save the rest for later in a still-sealed bag. I’m certain this adds to the cost, as well.

Probably OK for the person who will only eat one or two every so often, but if you are eating a pound or two per day then the packaging is useless.

That’s why I go elsewhere for my chicken.

It’s top round steak. I think it’s usually $4-5/lb but the sale was 2.49/lb and with the ShopRite card it came to 1.49/lb. There was a limit of one pack but I just did 4 separate orders

Well the size doesn’t really matter since it’s by the pound. As far as quality, it’s generally either the ShopRite brand or Perdue.

Yea I could never really find a definitive answer to how much of each macro and calories were in the steak I have so I just averaged a few together, came out to 10g protein and 1.7g of fat per ounce.

167 the other day but that was after dinner. Today in the morning it said 164. Still progress. Clean bulking takes too damn long >.<

When you all clean bulk, what sorta bf % do you try to stay at? I’m guessing before I start pushing more seriously at bulking I was at 11% and now am probably around 16% if I were to take a guess. And I’ve practically stopped all cardio and even cut down on my pull-up rep count in favor of lower rep weighted pull-ups. Still this gaining just sucks.

Why would you NOT want to do weight your pull ups with the goal being buildintg as much muscle mass as possible?

I dont worry about percentages, just check the mirror or photos. Make sure your chest sticks out further than your gut and your biceps still have a peak.

Not that I am bulking…but I am eating burgers on a cut, 93% lgb and I find it commical that people act as though burgers are the devil. Carry on though, this was a bit random.

I can typically find top round steak locally for 2.49-3.49/lb but try and wait till it hits 1.79-.99 and buy 20+ lbs.

How do you find 93% lean ground beef? I buy extra lean ground beef and eat 1 pound of it everyday…but for every 100grams it’s 22grams of protein and 10 grams of fat…so from the beef I get 88 grams of protein and 40 grams of fat from the lb. I eat.

Deat - as for the chicken I buy the already cooked chicken in the package…it’s a small little chicken put under the heaters…so there’s all bone and skin…I just cut out the bones, take the skin off and take all the meat…I put 200grams of it in my lunch today (i have a scale)…and 100 grams is supposed to be 3.5oz…and if there’s 30 grams of protein per 3.5oz that would mean I had 60 grams of protein…but I don’t know if this is right or not…and it’s kinda important because if I’m only getting 40 then well I need to up it so I can get to my desired number.

You said there would be more fat in the breast too…but I didn’t taste any…I’m confused about chicken…that is kinda sad lol

This is something people need to seriously answer for themselves and figure out what they’ll need to do to stay happy. Some guys might feel and look fine at 15-20% bodyfat while others might be totally unhappy above 12%. Assuming both are naturally 15%, the first is going to be able to blast at it longer and with slightly less diligent food/cardio decisions while the second is going to have be much more strict and maybe even accept slower gains.

Where do you fall here?

If you cook it in crumbles in a pan you can put it in a pasta strainer and run hot water over it for 30+ seconds and remove a large portion of the fat that cooks to the surface if this is a concern of yours. If you are struggling for size… keep your fat

Ugh. I’m going to have to starting eating more again… I’m down 5 pounds from last week. Though my measurements are up.
